Kairi's heart was fractured and the shards scattered across Scala Ad Caelum (the white city), and while the lore reason holds up (they didn't kill off any of the other guardians either) it failed to excuse Kairi's treatment in the initial release. I thought it was fine, Kairi is not experienced at fighting Let's remember Axel gets his ass wiped for most of the finale for a similar reason (not being experienced with a Keyblade) It was either they do the final mix treatment or go with what they did in the game, use Sora's time travelling to create a plot justified final mix Hey, you can beat Xehanort WITH Kairi, I think that really makes up for it
