The American Robin is a migratory bird of the thrush genus. It is named after the European robin because of its reddish-orange breast, though the two species are not closely related, with the European robin belonging to the Old World flycatcher family. The American robin is widely distributed throughout North America, wintering from southern Canada to central Mexico and along the Pacific coast, wherein our story lays.
American Robins are the most abundant land bird in North America (with 370 million individuals), ahead of red-winged blackbirds, introduced European starlings, mourning doves and house finches. Active mostly during the day and assembles in large flocks at night. Its diet consists of invertebrates (such as beetle grubs, earthworms, and caterpillars), fruits, and berries.
It is one of the earliest bird species to lay its eggs, beginning to breed shortly after returning to its summer range from its winter range. The robin's nest consists of long coarse grass, twigs, paper, and feathers, and is smeared with mud and often cushioned with grass or other soft materials. It is among the earliest birds to sing at dawn, and its song consists of several discrete units that are repeated (from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)
While it's been a couple years since it was filmed, watching this American Robin bird nest footage today I must say it's absolutely fascinating! You literally cannot take your eyes off the screen - every second is captivating. While you're at it have a look inside the beak. Get a load of that semi-translucent skin. Wonder at how incredibly helpless this hatchling is and yet still manages to put up a fight, right out of the gate.
Watch it sleep, watch it breathe, watch it snuggle, watch it dream of food and flight. The parent robin that plops in, how you just gonna squash it like that lol? How can I tell if that's the mom or the dad robin? Does it even matter? A lot of time watching the two of them proved that it was an equal partnership, with both birds putting in the work required to bring up four babies.
Well, it's the final installment in this nest watch series. If you're really curious about what happened to the precious inhabitants of this nest then just ask, and I'll try to work up the nerve required to tell you (I have since deleted the footage). The outcome required an adjustment of my views on nature. Mind you, I'm not any less fond of the animal kingdom and birds in particular...to the contrary, I love it more than ever and spend a crazy amount of time making nature content.
Perhaps I'm just a little more cautious, a little more guarded about my expectations of how the world and its creatures, people included, should behave.

I didn't know this, thanks for bringing it to my attention! Turns out the female Cuckoo decides what color the egg will be and it can indeed lay blue eggs to match the eggs of the host nest! Brilliant 👌🥚💙 Cheers, Declan 🦉
