Thanks Ben, enjoy the build. It's a great kit, just make extra sure to use plenty of glue to secure the bomb bay/fuselage floor in place. I had mine pop loose at some point in the build and had to re-secure with more Revell Contacta glue. Not a problem but a heart raising moment when handling her on the bench, did mean to mention in the videos but clearly forgot, apart from that and the tight tolerances she builds up into an impressive beast. I'm very tempted to get a Dambuster myself as it's such a fun build, you've got me thinking now! 🤔😁👍

I got the Border Models Lancaster, if you ever want an awesome kit of the Lancaster, this is the only kit you want. It's way beter then the HKM 1:32 scale Lancaster. I'm so not building it, since I am waiting for Quinta Studio decals for it and some other aftermarket items. Hope you get it as well and make a video about it.

Hi Moxxi, looks a nice kit but I don't think I'll be getting one. Just too big for me, filming the 1/48 scale Lancaster was difficult enough I'd have to build an extension and get a wide angled camera. Hope you enjoy building yours, looking forward to when we start to see these kits being built. I'm delayed with Part 4 due to moving house and renovations taking priority at the moment but I'll get back to editing when I'm less busy. Cheers

@spruehunter
@spruehunter 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Joffrey, she's certainly a fair size lump once assembled but made life easier for painting due to the fact you can pop the wings on and off. As you say it's a shame about the interior but I always take photos before closing fuselages so I have a record. Most of the time if I can't see it I don't worry about it, but I wanted to show others what the interior looks like, I'm not a fan of clear fuselage halves and the main appeal of aircraft for me is the external view anyway so I'm happy with what the kit gives you.

Thanks, making models should be a fun thing to do. The reason I build is because I find it to be a great stress release, you can forget about the world and any problems and just loose yourself in the process of building and painting. Hopefully this series will encourage more people to build thier own and we can see more Lancasters in all their glory! 😁👍

No problem Tony, I was unsure of making a start before seeing what aftermarket was available but happy enough with what the kit provides, the flight engineers panel was the only thing I felt let's the cockpit down. Even if HK had given us decals to use I could have lived with that but the Yahu panel was worth adding. I think I might go to town on a Dambuster version if/when it gets released 🤞

I know! Shame really but to be honest once you unmask the canopy there's not much seen of the cockpit unless your really close. I wouldn't recommend spending much time detailing the interior unless your into that sort of thing but a lovely kit to build. maybe someone will be more adventurous and do a museum style cut-away to show off the inside or a diorama of a crashed Lancaster? Looking forward to the rest of this build...I've done a bit of research already on the HK 1/8 Lanc compared to the Tamiya one and the general consensus is that the HK one is the better kit...The last time I made a Lanc was in 1977 with the Airfix 1/72 scale Lanc in black plastic and Roy Cross' famous artwork...so very much looking forward to getting this kit...soon!
@spruehunter
@spruehunter 3 жыл бұрын
The HKM kit is definitely a simpler build but there's way more accurate detail in the Tamiya version. Personally I prefer the way the HKM goes together but it is a modern tooled kit. Having the wings slide on and off makes painting so much easier, fits in the spray booth for one and makes storage/transport easier if you were going to shows I suppose. I'm sure we will see some stunning builds of the kit once we get some aftermarket options.

I found out a lot of information as I built the kit, I'll do a summary of what to look out for at the end of the series, a sort of summing up of the kit. There's more use of the Abteilung oils which I go through so hopefully some useful information for others. Cheers 👍

@@jamespatrick7358 I don't think there is anything stopping you from making a "cut-away" model to display the interior, I suppose the only limit is your imagination and ability. @spruehunter
@spruehunter 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Gary, I think it's up to the modeller how far you want to go. Once it's closed up there's not much to see, if I wasn't doing a video build I would be tempted to leave it pretty basic from the wireless operators seat back and maybe detail from there forward. I'm happy with the kit decals for the instrument panel and the addition of the flight engineers panel as these are most visible (p.e. seatbelts help) I'm more blown away with the exterior detail. Once you get primer and paint down it really pops and that's even before washes. When I'm building and do spend time on an interior I usually take a bunch of photos before I close it up then I add them to the album of the build once completed, helps me keep a record of what I've done. Useful things like photos of what paints or clear coats used at different stages so in the future I can look back for reference. Cheers for the kind comments 👍

This allows me to film building on the bench but I can simply swing it over to film anything I'm painting in the spray booth. @spruehunter
@spruehunter 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question Scott, I'm glad to report they have sorted the issues with the horizontal stabilisers so we now get proper tops and bottoms, port and starboard 👍 As for the turret, you sound like you know more about it than me, there is a blanking plug for the top turret so there will be a Dambusters version somewhere down the line. If it's a turret specific to a mk. 10 then maybe a kit will be released to allow that version to be build? Possibly HKM getting more boxings? Release the mk. 1 as everyone will want a new tooled Lanc so will buy them. After initial buzz dies down release the versions everyone really wants, Dambuster, Grand Slam, Mk. III etc. Not sure about using Tamiya parts, but I think there will be a lot of aftermarket available soon. Look at the B-17 series and what you can get, I'm sure we'll see stuff announced soon. At least I hope so as I'm itching to do a Dambuster!
@BigLisaFan
@BigLisaFan 3 жыл бұрын
The RCAF Mk. X had the paddle blade propellers and no windows down the length of the fuselage and different instruments on the flight engineer's panel (General Electric). Different engines too (Packard US built Merlin 224s ) but you can't see them anyway. Doubt we will ever see a Mk. X as all the other variants used the earlier fuselage. Guess they will sell more Dambuster etc than Mk. Xs, but still nice to dream. I remember seeing KB889 (Duxford Lancaster) a number of times when she was in Canada. Just after the owner had rewired it, vandals got in and cut all the wiring. Rumour was it was done in retaliation on behalf of another museum after the owner would not sell it to them but that's all it might be, just a rumour. Nothing more ever came of it. When KB889 was sold, the government approved the export of the airframe but not the engines which, after overhaul, I think went on to help get FM213 flying.

@spruehunter
@spruehunter 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ernest, I did forget to mention that so glad you asked. It's "sprue goo" or styrene filler, made using Tamiya extra thin glue with bits of styrene sheet chopped up and added. You can vary the styrene to glue ratio depending on your needs. Benefits over other putty/filler is once its cured it sands and scribes like the rest of the kit plastic with minimal shrinkage. Hope that helps, there's videos on here about how to make it. I use a thick one for gap filling and a thin one for minor jobs. 😁👍

@spruehunter
@spruehunter 3 жыл бұрын
Your welcome, no varnish used on the interior apart from a few drops in the dials on the instrument panel. You could use a varnish if you wanted but I prefer the effect I get using Tamiya XF and the Abteilung wash, the texture of the paint is great for weathering. I would probably use a flat or satin coat if I was using a more glossy paint like MRP to give some texture for the wash and dry brushing to stick to. Thanks for the question, hope that helps 👍

@@spruehunter Looking forward to Part 3. I am primarily a 1/12 Tamiya F1 car model maker but have tried a few aircraft, 1/72 Airfix Valiant and Vulcan to name the most recent. The part I find most challenging is weathering so interested to see how you apply that to the Lancaster. By the way excellent and instructive videos, I am now a subscriber.

Thanks Mike, I've found it it was re-painted during one of Sugars overhauls. The likelihood is that it was painted black by the crew during operations in WW2.

It's a Harder & Steenbeck Evolution CR Plus 0.2, good airbrush. If I was going for a new one I'd be looking at the Mr Hobby Procon Boy 270 as seems good value for money.

Enjoy building it Zayne, I wish I had the space for a model that big. There's a few things to look out for with the 1/32 kit but have a look around on KZbin, there's a few videos on how to solve the problems. But whatever you do just enjoy yourself as that's the point 😁👍

@@spruehunter my last Project was a WW2 1/6 RC LRDG Willys Jeep. You know I only live in a 1 Bedroom unit but I’ll clear off my 8 seater dining table (Green felt tablecloth) it’s currently got two warhammer fortresses on it with Elves and Chaos armies on it and a half painted ACW Confederate army. I’m planning on getting a couple of 1/32 Nissan huts 🛖

Hopefully with this new release someone will offer a full crew, sure to be alot of aftermarket for this kit. Maybe a gap in the market for someone with a 3D printer and some know how if the big companies fail to supply.

Why didn't you make the small windows with the Krystal Klear instead of using that as a glue? I don't think you know how to use that Krystal Klear... Read about it on the Web, you can make windows with that Klear. I ALWAYS use that to make the small windows. I made this HKM Lancaster and the both B-17's,and didn't used the tiny windows,but used the Krystal Klear to make the windows. Maybe for a next time, m8. Awesome build btw.
@spruehunter
@spruehunter 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Moxxi, yeah I use that method for most windows but on this particular build I used the kit clear parts as they are painted over as "S for Sugar" didn't have the side windows in the fuselage. She also has quite a high demarcation line between the camo and the black underside compared to most Lancs. I agree that Krystal Klear is a far better way of achieving a scale looking window but also wanted this to be a "simple to follow along" build, hence the basic interior detailing and focusing mainly on the construction of the model so everyone can produce a great finish to their model and then add their own artistic flair when it comes to painting. Glad you like the videos, I'll maybe make a point of demonstrating the uses of Krystal Klear in a future video. 👍

Can I understand better please what you're saying re. black at the beginning of this? That was a mistake on your part and we shouldn't do that - just go with green? But I see black at the very nose? Yours confused LOL.
@spruehunter
@spruehunter 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Don, yes it's a little confusing but I had reference photos showing the bomb aimers compartment to be all black but on "S for Sugar" she definitely has a green nose section as she was originally built as a Manchester so was interior green throughout. So if your doing that scheme then paint it all green. There were many various during the war of how Lancaster interiors were painted. I had reference photos showing black noses and cockpit section right up to the navigatiors position. Just wanted to mention it in the video so others could avoid my mistake, just follow the kit instructions on that one and you'll be fine 👍

@@spruehunter thanks Greg. There are two Lancs I want to build, my Uncle’s 619 sqdn EE147 PG-P (no photos unfortunately but a sister ship of the well photographed Phantom of the Ruhr EE139) and French Aéronavale MkVII WU13 now on display at MOTAT museum in Auckland NZ. It was all white with a few black bits and no mid-upper. Well photographed thankfully as was WU15 aka NX611.

Yeah the interior is basic, less detail than the 1/32 but you really don't see much. Main thing is we get a modern tooled 48 scale Lancaster with recessed detail. I'm sure we'll see resin upgrades coming along soon and people opening up the fuselage so you can see the interior. At least we get p.e. seatbelts included 🤷‍♂️
