Great video Sprue. I have been building model kits for over 55 years now and I must say that I have never seen someone so keen on the finer detail on a kit. Some of the tools that you use is something I have never ever seen before. I have built 1/24 & 1/12 cars, 1/48 & 1/32 litre planes, 1/350 & 1/200 warships, 1/14 RC trucks, and 1/35 static tanks & 1/16 RC tanks with the latter being my favourite. My first kit was of a Spitfire when I was 12 years old as a Christmas present, that now seems like a very long time ago. At the moment I am building a 1/32 Tamiya F4E Phantom II which is at a standstill as we are packing for a house move. I also have a 1/16 Tamiya RC M1A2 ABRAMS Tank that I inherited from my late brother had started building in Australian Army colours, that needs to be built. I do have the same 1/16 RC Tamiya M1A2 ABRAMS kit that I finished a few years ago depicted from the Iraq War. So getting back to your Lanc build, I am very interested in the methods you use to solve certain issues that arise to the finished part. So even though I may have many years of experience one can still learn.

Thanks Gary, I'm very humbled by the responses like yours on the build. I had no idea that so many would be interested and that I'd actually be able to impart some knowledge on others, the modelling community is certainly a very supportive one. Part 4 of the build is up now, hope you like it. 👍

Thanks Chris, I was very gung ho in my youth but nowadays I'm happy to take my time, I remember not even painting interiors just so I could get something into an aircraft shape to fly round the room making engine and machine gun noises... of course I have to retrain myself these days as that kind of activity gets me strange looks from my better half! Anyway thanks for commenting and I hope you like Part 4 when its out.

Thanks, very tempted by a Dambuster version myself. Make sure when you come to build yours to use a lot of glue to secure the Bombay/cockpit floor. Mine popped open when I was handling it for painting and I forgot to make a point of that in the video, maybe use something like Revel Contacta, I managed to re-glue mine but apart from that it's a great kit, I'm sure you will enjoy the build 😁👍

G'day Sprue, Thank you so much for these videos. I got myself one of these as soon as they became available here in Australia. I'm ex-RAAF and in my retirement years I've become a military historian; mainly concentrating on air power during WW2 and Korea. To me, the Lanc. was the best bomber of the war in terms of effectiveness of getting ordinance on, or nearest, a target. It's such a pity that the Lanc. wasn't given a belly turret; I believe that would have saved many aircrews from a sad end. They could have just fitted one forward or aft of the bomb bay. There certainly wasn't any room for waist gunners, however, the fact that most flew at night was in their survival favour. I've also got a lot of respect for the B-17s; all those guns and such a small bomb load was unfortunate, however, the way they used them, in daylight ops, they needed every bullet they could throw at the Luftwaffe. Personally, I think the Americans made a huge mistake continuing to fly in daylight even after losses were 'screaming' at them to give it away. Until they had escorts, they should have joined the RAF in night ops. The combined effect on European and German targets would have still kept the other side scrambling to make repairs and keep their factories going. The RAF repeatedly warned the 8th Air Force not to do day ops but they wouldn’t listen. They were spot on bombers when finding daylight targets in the New Mexico deserts but over cloudy Europe their accuracy, like them, was shot to pieces. Anyway, back to your excellent build. I’m so glad you are a stickler for fine detail; I think that much overlooked. I never tackle a model until I’ve gone through my library and the internet to find details about the more interesting aircraft types, pilots, battle history etc. I’m often amused by the trend, these days, to be so exact with so-called D-Day or ‘invasion stripes’. I have dozens of period pics of these big stripes being applied by ground crew, mostly General Hands, slapping these on using huge tins of paint and rough 6-inch brushes. They certainly didn’t have the neat lines one sees on all manufacturers’ boxes and, due to this, it is replicated by modellers. I always hand paint my ‘invasion stripes’ with wide, flat brushes and I never take too much care in the paint job, as it was done in reality. Surface patching, to repair battle damage is also, mostly, overlooked by modellers. Many aircraft took to the air looking like patchwork bedspreads! The Surface Finishers at most British airfields took care to replace important aircraft ID markings but, otherwise, paint was, again, slapped on over patches. The top priorities, of course, were always the jobs that got the planes back in the air and safe for the crews to fly. ‘Cosmetic’ repairs simply didn’t matter, especially in the first half of the war when ops were almost an everyday affair. I liked the way you did the entire interior of your Lanc. I do this sometimes; it’s good practice, for a start, and with famous aircraft or ones that I know are in museums these days, I’ll go for a perfect paint job and an ‘out of the factory’ look. It’s enjoyable to do this from time to time. I reckon more manufacturers should give modellers the option of a clear fuselage side on significant kits like ‘Memphis Belle’ or Guy Gibson’s Dam Busters aircraft etc. It’s often done with submarine models and some large tank kits and they can look fantastic. Anyway, writing being part of my job, I tend to ramble on, too long for many KZbinrs so, I’ll sign off now and just say I subscribed some time back and I’m really looking forward to more of your impressive modelling. Cheers, and all the best to you for Christmas. Bill H. Hobart, Tasmania

Thanks Bill, sorry for taking so long to reply. been very busy with work but manged to get the next part out which covers the painting. I really enjoyed reading your comment above, your spot on with what you say, only thing I would say is regarding the daylight raids by the US kept the pressure on the Germans, less fighters to go off roaming for ground targets. Everything that happened might have seen small or a high risk at the time but it was a combined effort from all the allies that was needed to grind the German war machine to a halt. Thanks for taking the time to write it and again I apologise for the delay in getting back to you. Hopefully you enjoy Part 3 and I look forward to reading any future comments, all the best. - Sprue

Commentary is brilliant...Video is brilliant...Must have watched these 2 vids 4 or 5 times...Interesting to see what colours you use for the camo...I've built a few 1/32 kits now, Spit mk2, Spit mkIX, Mossie and Harrier since getting back into the hobby after a 40 year hiatus (all cheap Revells by the way...which are very good kits especially for the price)...I have mixed all the camo colours individually (am a retired muralist by trade so colour mixing is something I've done for 35 years...lol)...None of the recommended colours did it for me without some adding of other pigment to get them as I wanted them...Most modellers understand that WW2 colours are a mix of opinion, fact and preference...not to mention the scale issue of colours looking different on small models...Its a minefield!...So I am interested to see how you get the colours for the Lanc...Some of the kits I see seem to have the colours too bright for my liking...The more dirty, lighter colours I like for the Lanc upper camo..They seem to make the kits look more authentic and less 'toy' looking...As I say there's a lot of preference and artistic licence in colours...So please let us know how you came to the colours you used...Looking forward to the next vid!...Great work, great vid, great commentary!!

BIG Thanks for Part II...It was well worth the wait...I know how much work goes into video editing too so BIG thanks again...I will be following this tutorial step by step when I start mine...but will probably wait for the final reveal so I know I have all the extras (masks and photo-etch) so I don't have to wait while I'm in building mode...I built a 1/32 revell Mosquito a couple months back and it had big landing lights underneath the wings so I tried something that worked surprisingly well...I glued some oven tin foil (5cm squares) on the underside of the top wing so that it was highly reflective...Tin foil laying flat is probably more reflective than any paints you can get...The fact that the tin was not glued to the bottom wing over the lens also helped the illusion for some reason...Might be worth experimenting more with tin foil on landing lights...I was really happy with the result...
@spruehunter
@spruehunter 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Lewis, your feedback means a lot. Great idea about using tin foil, I have some bare-metal foil so may try that in the future. Love the liquid chrome and to be honest it's the first time I've had the finish be grainy, think it's the type of plastic that HKM use for their clear parts but just like pointing out mistakes so others don't do the same. There's certainly a lot more aftermarket options out now, I'd probably go down the route of photoetch for the radiators and the grills on the carburettor intakes as the kit detail is lacking. Probably a set of brass barrels too but apart from changing the flight engineers panel I'm really happy with how it's turned out. Thanks again for leaving a comment 😁👍

@@spruehunter hi mukka. Yes defo. If you like or have time, I did a build video of it on my KZbin channel. If you follow any of my videos, I said, I think, around 90,000000000000000000 times ! Ha that the kit was pretty awful . Now, I've always been open and honest regarding Model Kits, bits and bobs etc etc and I think this is something that other Modellers, I'd like to say and point out everything in a review, that includes the kit flaws . We are paying good money and at times remortgaging my house, several times over to pay for a kit that you, we, us etc etc have been re?ly excited once the first tests shots are released etc to buy this kit . Then at the very last minute decide to read the price ........... Then we get flawed. Lol. Classic example would be the new 1/48th scale Phantom. I felt quite upset and destroyed if you like. It sounds, childish of me but personally, and remember Tamiya are my all time favourite manufacturer with Takom now coming very fast up my " League Table " lol to joint favourites, Anyway , I've bored you enough these last few days. I'm surprised you haven't fallen to sleep a lot more times. Anyway, I felt sick, angry, no confidence, no enthusiasm , no trust etc etc but I'll cut it off now before I give you a free " Coma" and newly trained, learned and listened jail Craft , experience etc. The price was awful. I can't believe it. I felt as though my favourite, joint favourite was taking the " Wee Wee " out of us modellers. You can totally understand with this last year and before all creeping up on us and destroying our wonderful hobby. I decided to take a " left " turning out ofvmy driveway which is a lot more " Action Packed" if you like. Its a lot like Line of Duty. Where its set and the notorious housing estate , nicknamed " The BOG ". Mate got go , in court for 0930 hours. So my chat will be a wee but less. Infact, none existant .

@spruehunter I wouldn't know where to put that many kits. As it is, I'm getting overrun with the children's Lego. I'm probably going to have to bite the bullet and buy more storage. We added a Bugatti Bolide (in yellow, my son wants the blue version for his birthday), a Harry Potter Patronus, a Christmas tree, and Santa with sleigh and reindeer over Christmas. I think my 1975 Lego Hospital might have to be disassembled before long. There's another 7 Lego sets on top of my drawers, too. My three kits are on top of my turntable in the living room. It might mean a clear out before long, too. The joys of a one bedroom flat.

Build is looking great, looked at my kit and don't seem to have the fading rivet problem you have A tip for molotow pens, put some onto top of upturned tamiya paint pot. Put some chrome onto it and add a drop of Leveling thinnners. Stops the grit then and you apply with a brush, don't clean jar and next time you need to use reactivate it with thinners. I have the refil and it doesn't go gritty like my pen did over time.

Just a question...What did you use to glue clear parts to clear parts?...I must have missed that bit...I've seen a chap use Extra thin very very sparingly so not to get mist and clouding...but I can imagine that would create a better bond than using any PVA based glue...
@spruehunter
@spruehunter 3 жыл бұрын
Every clear part in the build is glued using Micro Krystal Klear, unfortunately I lost some of the footage of joining some of the turret pieces together but just a case of running a small bead round the edges. I agree that extra thin would be a better join but there's a chance that the glue might fog the clear parts. The benefits also of using the PVA based glue is that when we unmask if there is any dust or debris on the inside you can carefully remove the offending part, clean it and re-install. If you do want to use a hot glue I'd recommend using very sparing amounts of the quick setting extra thin which should reduce the chance of fogging. Hope that helps 😁👍

@@hirstyboy97 I have it mounted on a boom arm that extends from the desk in front of me so the camera is just in front of my forehead, have to move it around depending on what I'm doing. I do end up knocking it a lot especially with a kit this big 😂👍

Are you building an aircraft completed before June/July 1943? If so the turret internal structure was in a natural metal or painted in an aluminium colour, after June /July 43 they were painted black on the production line.

Yes looking at references I agree with you but I'm just building the kit by most following the recommendations that HKM gives for people following along. I was going to do a video at the end of the series to point out things to look out for. So I'll try and remember to mention that fact. Thanks 😁👍

Those micro drills you're using, what brand are they?

They are cheap sets on eBay under £5, I have to regularly order more as they are good but incredibly fragile to sideways impacts. I must have around 4 sets but only one complete set from 0.1 to 1mm.

Rivet detail issue...I I accidently bought 2 of this kit (I already ordered one from a shop that had said they had a problem with getting hold of it so I bought another and then the initial one turned up that I'd previously ordered...Dang!..so....One will be on ebay at some point)...so I examined both kits and both do not have this issue...or any issue with the factory cut from sprue fuselage halves either...

Good to hear your kits are unaffected Lewis, looks like it's a very limited issue, maybe the first batch were only a problem?

Apart from the cockpit can anyone seriously understand why there should be a fuselage interior,i could understand if they had a clear fuselage but since there isn't one whats the point

Thanks Turtle, I think what HKM give us in 1/48 scale is adequate, I'd be more annoyed if it was super detailed and like you say once you close it up its gone forever!

Lovely kit and build but it does surprise me how much ejector pins and seamlines are on such an expensive kit.
@spruehunter
@spruehunter 3 жыл бұрын
I think to be fair to HKM they are in areas we're not really going to see, easy to clean up. I'd say the ejection pins in Tamiyas 1/32 Mosquito are far worse and that kits twice the price from a triple A manufacturer. Seam lines are present due to the complexity of the pieces being moulded and a few swipes of a sanding stick takes care of them 👍

@@PanzerChicken69 WNW & CSM are top of their game, stunning well made kits, a real joy to put together. Both my wings, top and bottoms as well as a few areas on the fuselage have the fading rivet detail. Seems like only a few kits affected, which is good. HKM quality control must have stepped up 😁👍
