im so sick of greedy landlords pushing us out of our homes, and then punishing us for it. it's so fucked up. the housing bubble needs to burst so they can suck it up and beg for good tenants.

The old landlords were angry you left. You had been paying that exorbitant rent and your moving essentially called their bluff. They were taking advantage of you and were mad they couldn’t do it anymore.

Definitely take the landlords to small claims! They are banking on you not. My friend was in a similar situation and was able to gather more than sufficient evidence all on her own and won in basically the legal equivalent of a landslide lol.

Its actually bananas that landlords dont actually understand their role. Like. Idek how to explain this without rambling but especially since you guys lived there for so long- years!- cleaning is PART OF THEIR JOB!! When a tenant moves out, part of the expectation of their duties is to freakin do basic cleaning and maintenance. Especially with tenants who have stayed so long, theres general wear and tear that occurs over the course of living that is (or i guess should be?) protected under rental agreements. Idk theres this landlord who makes content that does a really good job of explaining it actually and I can’t remember who he is rn, but he like walks thru properties after tenants move out and explains why he would or would not give security deposits back and he actually made this whole process make so much sense to me. Literally in all the videos Ive seen of his, theres only ONE where he kept partial security deposit from a tenant and its because they melted the siding of the house by having a grill too close. Melted the literal SIDING and he only kept the portion he needed to get the area replaced!! I dunno. Being a landlord is such a shitty way to make a living obviously but there are some that are better than others and at least understand that it actually IS a job and isn’t just free money. The expectation should not be on you to freaking get the house professionally cleaned, or replace those floorboards, whatever. These freaks probably would have still said something because the cleaners used chemicals they didn’t like or whatever the hell. Can’t win!! Im glad you fought them on a lot of it and mostly won. They seem like such pests.

The system with deposit, first and last rent is so dumb and expensive. Ofc the landlord wants to be petty and keep the deposit, bc he's already spent it. In Sweden it's rare to even pay a deposit, but if it's required, it's payed to a part of the government that keeps it in a 'trust' and is payed back when renter moves out. The landlord has to prove damages and get that approved to get any money to renovation. I've lived in 6 apartments, all different landlords, private and commercial, never payed a deposit.

You should definitely take those petty landlords to small claims court! $1500 is NOT nothing and they're hoping you let their greed and manipulation slide. Legally, you did nothing wrong and should get back 100% of your deposit
@daniellejennings90162 ай бұрын
Taking your landlord to small claims court is rarely worth it, which is how they get away with being 💩💩💩. I swear they have a training that goes over when and how to be petty when tenants are leaving. Glad you’re done with all that!
@nicolerussell80792 ай бұрын
I'm pretty sure it's actually illegal for them to charge you for that cleaning, that's considered normal wear and tear and cannot be taken out of your deposit!! But I understand not wanting to pursue legal action. Sucks because that's how landlords get away with this!

I know you want to be done with your landlords but they will keep doing this again and again if they’re not checked on it. I would really reconsider. $1,500 would also help you finish furnishing ! Lol. Food for thought. But regardless I’m happy for you!

Ugh, I'm so sorry about those TERRIBLE landlords. For what it's worth, there are probably some good tenants' rights orgs in LA! I also once filed a BBB complaint against my landlord who never took me off the electricity bill and, magically, she finally gave me my money back. Slightly petty? Yes, but also fully worth it

My partner and I toured your old house in August and remarked several times on how beautifully the previous tenants had styled and kept the home (so much so that I remembered your furniture and recognized it in the thumbnail of your video while searching for tiled furniture just now) We loved the house, but the rent was too high. We were turned off when the landlord told us they expect the tenants to pay the weekly landscaper. I found that outrageous, especially considering the mass amounts of water I knew we’d already be paying to keep the entire property of THEIR plans alive. It sounds like we dodged a huge bullet. I can’t believe they tried to charge you for things that were clearly normal wear and tear. Horrible.

Speaking of window treatments, I have two windows in my new apartment and I called a “blinds for less” type place and the lady made me schedule a Zoom meeting. It was me taking her from the one room to the second room holding my iPad and then she goes “so this is…..a small job…” I looked around and started trying to justify my one bedroom apartment that I pay $3,200 for every month of my single lady life. It’s a new apartment complex. After we stared at each other on Zoom a while, she goes “Our services start at $620” I gulped and squeaked, “For my….small job…?” I still cringe when I think about it. Wait it’s not over. So, me…single lady…hired some random dude on task rabbit who drilled holes into the steel beams around my windows and you can’t even move the $15/ panel curtains from Amazon back like normal curtains. It makes me feel like the white trash I came from. I mean…still?! I tried to do better. 😅
