Thanks for showing how it's done. It looks simple and easy, so that might fit my needs for me being lazy. Brent put a kink in it because here it's crawfish cooking hot. I'll be adding earth battery cooling pipes to my greenhouse but that will only cool the water to keep the roots cool in flow system so it wouldn't work with this system. Thanks Brent for pointing that out.

I believe it's called "Flow to Waste" aka "Drain to Waste". It's a fun and the easiest because you don't have to worry about ph, ppms/ec, and a recirculating system. Are you concerned about the how hot the coco-blocks will get during mid-day? It was a concern of mine and I wanted to put a bug in your ear to keep an eye on root-zone temps. Looking forward to your season.
@josephglazier32864 жыл бұрын
totally agree, watch them root temps.

How much % of water is "wasted" in this system? The excess nutrient is just going to flow on the floor?
@paulbrownett36734 жыл бұрын
@Mike Gray Coconut coir holds massive amounts of liquid whilst still giving a high degree of root aeration. You do not over soak nor undersoak if the system craps out you still have time to fix it. Plant husbandry means you look at it all at least once a day if not more. You do not need a huge pump most hydroponics work off a fairly small sump pump in the barrel. Mine in NZ - we used the venturi effect mainly to suck fert up along with the water drop from a tank fed from a waterfall.

Impressive! About a month ago, I started growing a few hydroponic tomato plants in a 50-50 mix of perlite and vermiculite. Others are in the soil. Pretty interesting so far. Hydro cherry tomatoes are already out-producing the potted ones. However, we'll have to wait and see how they taste. Eager to keep up with your progress. We're thinking of using our greenhouse for hydroponic gardening. Can you reuse those growing mediums you're using? If so, how many times?

When the water goes from the block to the slab, where does the water go then?
@paulbrownett36734 жыл бұрын
When I had Hydro 18 years ago in NZ the water (including fert) goes into the bag 3 times a day - the plant then takes it up - if it is hot there is some losses through evaporation. This is slightly different to doing a NFT (Nutrient film technique) where you continuously flow nutrient and water through the troughs and collect the excess at the other end of the trough - that returns to the main tank to have fert adjusted. Sorry if treading on your cute tootsies Patty but I could not resist.
@paulbrownett36734 жыл бұрын
@Doodle Doo Doo Depends on how big the hobbyist is - using coco coir bags it is not that expensive - it depends on what you want - the coco coir holds the water/nutrients better than peat - if peat dries out it takes a lot to get it to rehydrate coco does it much faster. If doing say 6 bags and using a 45 gallon drum and simple drip stuff off ebay it does not cost the earth.
@paulbrownett36734 жыл бұрын
@Doodle Doo Doo I was a Commercial grower in NZ some 20 years ago and came across Coco Fibre by accident. I liked it because I could put whatever nutrients in that I wanted and it was fabulous. 20 odd years later I have a 250 sq m garden and finally decided to get back growing. We had a local shop with cheap compost but I do not have a vehicle so had to take it home 3 bags at a time. It is OK BUT if it dries out it is a sod to re hydrate and you lose plants. My coco coir is much better at holding moisture and fert. I have been buying coco coir from an excellent company - the owner of which I apparently bought from many moons ago and I get fabulous prices and delivered to the door. We are also cooperating on possible organic and inorganic ferts for him to sell as well. Can supply the name - not sure if he does where you are but he is a real gentleman not a conman.

I've been very curious how this system works. Does the water recirculate or do the plants just get irrigated, the substrates absorbs the unused nutes until the plants are ready to uptake them, any excess irrigation just drips out of the substrate? Did i get it right? Thanks.

I didn’t see the two stem system utilized in your more traditional dirt greenhouse setup. Is there an inherent advantage in this hydroponic system that enables use of the two stem system or is this simply another variation to test? Huge fan of your videos, this is my favorite YT channel.

@chinmayharkare24294 жыл бұрын
The first question which came to my mind is that of where does the excess water go to. It has already been answered that watering is done in small amounts to ensure that there is no run off. Another major question I have is that as water is evaporating and if the plants absorb more water on say hot days as compared to the nutrients, wouldn't the EC/TDS level of the medium keep on increasing slowly over say a week or so? If this goes to dangerously high levels, wouldn't the plant get affected? Is there a need to run plain water after a fixed number of days to reduce the concentration in the medium?

@@Growwiththelaplantes thanks.I can't meet the minimum purchase requirements for many of AMA's items.... our greenhouse is 16 x 32 and our outdoor hydroponics if only about 4 times that area. I'm so glad to see you going this route, because we're trialing the same method against grodan slabs with nutrient recovery this year. But not sure how valid our results will be with the no name coco coir bags we will likely have to resort to. between you and Zan at Plover Mills I am able to get a good idea how the non-industrial scale hydroponics people are operating. It is much appreciated.

Terrific set up! Just one question though, are you just adjusting up the hydro nutrients you usually use in the lettuce house, or are you using a formula specially suited for tomatoes? It is really difficult to find dry hydro nutrients (for hobby gardeners) that isn't packaged in tiny amounts and geared to marijuana growing :/
