The ICM Foxbat was a joy to build and I am tempted by this unusual Japanese aircraft- Even with a mask set, I think people would be daunted by a lot of the aircraft from this period when complex canopies were the norm - He111 anyone

A mask set will factory cost them £1 max let’s face it. They just don’t want to encourage the habit of having mask included in kits. I would gladly pay £3 more for a kit that has mask included to save the hassle to look for them.

Agree. I so wish Hasegawa and Tamiya would too. Here in Australia the price of masks from either Eduard or Montex gets pumped up to beyond grudge buy point in the main. Love Eduard Profipacks and Limited Editions for that reason, or used to before our dollar crashed in conjunction with Edward's price hikes. Frustrating as it is, I buy Tamiya Masking Sheets and masking tape for most, and will only outlay for pre-cut masks on kits with loads of transparencies like Tamiya's 1/48 Betty and this unfortunately -sigh.

@@rafael2499 I'm not that good at it either. =] It's a case of grudge buying, but I do with subjects like Tamiya's "Betty". It does put me off ICM's "Sally".This is a kit I just wouldn't buy it until masks are available, and then I'd take the total cost into consideration. I generally just refuse to pay up to as much as half the cost of the kit again for masks sourced in this country. I'm nowhere near a hobby shop so getting hold of them usually involves postage which if taken on a individual basis as often it must be due availability and source, makes them dearer yet. It all makes Eduard Profipacks with masks, PE and multiple decal options complete with stencils included = good value. I'm a German NJG afficionado and workhorse of that fight the Bf 110, so my 1/48 Bf 110 collection with its greenhouse canopy is all Eduard Profipack or Limited Edition. Anything with a plethoria of individual frame greenhouse transparencies I generally albeit begrudgingly weaken and bite the $$ bullet. e.g. Tamiya's Ki-46III, Hasegawa's Ki-45 & Aichi D3A1.

Having at least a mask template should be the standard for any decent manufacturer.

Those modellers who own (or can acess) a Cutter machine like the Cricut Maker 3 or Maker 4 or a Silouette Cameo 4 (I have that one!) will be able to scan the template and use it to cut their masks in about 40 minutes (including importing scan to cutter.) So the provision of a template can help in that fashion and still save a lot of time and effort over doing it manually. This is true of any ICM kit with the templates in the Instructions.
@ModelkitStuff
@ModelkitStuff 10 ай бұрын
Hi, problem with templates in instructions is the same problem with the Tamiya printed ones, they are only as good as the person that cuts them out. I much prefer to cut them out in situ from masking tape. I generally don't buy masks and if I do I want vinyl masks that are much sharper. may have to look at one of those machines, any good for camouflage patterns?

The aftermarket masking sets are fairly pricey. Plus, then if it's a new kit how long would you have to wait for it to come out. I am definitely interested in this kit. A good-looking plane well executed. I would say the only other criticism I could have would be a lack of surface detail ( ie. no rivets at all).
@rsf5898

John - How visible were rivets on the actual aircraft?
@johnmaddox7432
@johnmaddox7432 10 ай бұрын
@@rsf5898 If you look at a plane within a foot or two to give it a good going over. That would equate to under 100 feet. That is visible detail in the real world. Let the eye of the beholder make the decision. If the price point is reasonable enough I will add the details myself.

I remember masking canopy in Tamiyas gekko- Those canopies have rounded corners on every "window"- so i was triming every little rectangle witx a scissors before putting it on place.... Not sending a mask together with the kit is a huge minus .....

Great kit and a great review! I got mine from Hannants last week. I've been waiting on this kit for ages - as far as i'm aware, ICM announced the 1/48 version first and then after a long quiet period they released a 1/72 version! My only disappointment with this kit is that you cannot have the dorsal gun position displayed open, unless I missed something. This is understandable at 1/72 scale but not so at 1/48.
@stephenwhelan8352
@stephenwhelan8352 10 ай бұрын
Hopefully we wont have to wait too long for their 1/48 Martin B26 Marauder they announced earlier this year. But going by the KI-21, they will probably release a 1/72 B-26 first.

Seems a really nice kit! I think I would do the green camouflage version. But to be honest almost all the kits I ever bought or that were given to me are based on well known vehicles, buildings etc. and the Ki-21 Sally isn't among them, at least not to me. A Betty I would probably buy. And there are just too many windows although a later version didn't have that huge second series of windows I just read. And I'm not really into after market products. I do buy them but not very often.

It was the most commonly used medium bomber in the JAAF, although it's not as well known as the Navy's G4M Betty. So anyone who is really big into the Pacific air war knows about it.

Asking me to spend an extra $6-10 for a masking set instead of tacking on an extra $5-10 for it included is ridiculous. There's the whole extra process of waiting for the aftermarket, possibly separate order, extra price variation...C'mon man. If it's a Stuka, Heinkel 111, or such as this Sally, they're almost cruel since it's such a readily available tech now.
@theblytonian3906
@theblytonian3906 10 ай бұрын
I agree. And it's usually not just $6-10. I presume you're talking USD. In my country it's AUD$15-$25 for any mask set to suit something like this PLUS, and here's the hurt part, $10 postage which has to be factored in. If they came included in the box, that nullifies that aftermarket pricing and postage. I'd gladly pay the extra and often do with Eduard Profipacks where they do the subject of interest. TBH, although I'm a fan of their kits and subjects covered, I'm appalled that in this day and age Hasegawa can get away with no masks, crew figurine and just two decal occasionally three options in their 1/48 kits considering their international pricing. Time all manufacturers included canopy masks as the bare minimum.

@@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab No. Like all early Japanese types, built light for performance on the available powerplants and fuel. The suffix B had some fuel tank protection but not fully self-sealing tanks in the sense of the word applicable to Allied aircraft. The Zero all variants was obsolete by 1943 and the Japanese knew it. It was kept in production because they had no choice -viable other option, design, component supply, skilled workers for production, tooling up. As it was, American production and operational numbers dwarfed Japanese which like the Luftwaffe, was a primary reason for their annihilation -pilot cadre attrition and neophyte training or lack thereoff in what they could field operationally notwithstanding. Even if they'd fielded the outstanding Ki-84 and N1K2-J, they'd have stood no chance on sheer disparity of carrier and aircraft numbers alone. Ref. Clausewitz.
