Yeah, I’ve also looked at board and card games for inspiration! Their accessibility is valuable when sharing games with family, marvel snap is one example of a tcg doing that, and it still has fun and deep gameplay

I really like the idea from Villainous of having a deck that messes with you, and you mentioned the problem of filling your positive deck with the best cards and the negative one with the worst cards, but there are 2 ways I thought of to mitigate that, the first is having your deck having a cost to build, where you have a certain amount of points that your deck can't be greater than and cards having various point costs to put in your deck, with the stronger the card the higher the cost... but then having the negative deck having negative points, so to fill your deck with the best cards you have to have cards you really don't want to have in your negative deck... this does sound like it would be a lot of work to balance, but it's at least something to consider. But the other idea to use that is to have your opponent's negative deck be used against you and your negative deck used against your opponent. It'll lose some of the theming bonus, but this is a TCG so you'll lose that anyway. Now this might still be clunky, but it's at least an idea to explore.

A point system could fix this, yes. But the idea of building two decks is an added hassle that I don't see many people really wanting in their lives. In theory this is great, but mass adoption is unlikely. But we are here asking the questions which is what is important, that is how you and I improve and learn and become better.

Great video, thanks. I also thought you were going to mention board games, jsut before you did in the video. Imo, T.C.G's are basically board games with cards as the only 'game pieces'.

Yes. The complexity of a TCG comes from collecting, building, and comboing your cards. Where board games can afford to be more complex through its additional pieces.

I want to give anyone seeing this video and comment a bit of homework: Play Castles of Burgundy in particular. Get the game, and play it with friends. It is NOT a TCG, but an actual board game. I want you to play and take in the lessons of game design it teaches you. Castles of Burgundy is my favorite board game of all time with perfect reviews online, and it's all for very good reason. This game is a race to the highest score as each player builds up their own kingdom, and yet the game doesn't feel confrontational between the players at all. It almost feels collaborative on each of the player's tasks. Every time I play with people, even the most competitive it may start out competitive, but by the end we're all acting like advisors to one another to help each of us get the best outcome each and every turn. It's honestly the most unique gameplay because of how it turns competition on its head and makes every player into this almost paragon of sportsmanship. This is a product of the game's design, and I challenge you to figure out how this happens for yourself. Compare it to board games that on the surface seem similar like Settlers of Catan, and find out why it's completely unlike Catan in its actual gameplay. Both have hexes that build a world, and both task you with building structures to get more points, but I want you to find out why Castles of Burgundy is nothing like Catan in practice. I've done it to some extent, but I want you to do it. When you've figured out at least some of how it's done, please come back and comment it here in reply, or if you've already played the game then think about it now and see if you can provide an analysis. I would love for us to sort of form a little thread here of information for anyone else that comes across it.

Something that would be cool is making a positive deck for you and a negative deck for your opponent.
@ShardTCG5 ай бұрын
Going with your idea, every card has a positive and negative. Cards can have costs in the form of drawing from your opponent's deck. Play your card and then risk the negative effect your opponent draws from their deck. This level of RNG might be too scary for most, but it could be a lot of fun.

yugioh has already made it similar to a dungeon building tcg in its first with the labyrinth duels, it is a real shame that konami has abandoned the concept
