Yeah, that's my fault. I realised after the recording how it was cropped. Alternatively, I have a previous video call "the art of making a trading card" that might be better for following the tools in inkscape.

Bit late to the party, but big congratulations… it seems like you’re already so close to 5k! I’ve been playing Shard TCG in person with friends and family and it was a big success, really good reception and general enjoyment of the game, they were quite surprised after I told them that there isn’t any mainstream or large tournaments (that I am aware of) on Shard TCG.

I thought I’d give an idea for a card game Kaijus Your deck has 3 kaijus outside of your deck A kaiju can be summoned by removing from play a certain amount of cards from the discard pile If you lose all your cards or all your kaijus you lose Kaijus are much stronger than regular creatures

2:40 I think one solution we may see become more common is simultaneous turn order games. Games where both players choose their actions and then flip them to find out the result of an encounter. I can think of several unique ways to accomplish this style of play that could all coexist in the marketplace as different complementary card games. Gosh, one day the lot of us will get together to make the perfect card game and kickstart a truly successful game on the order of the greats. Maybe on that day it will be a game of this design.

I don't think powercreep ads progression by making something faster and more complicated. i think it just makes new cards be played instead of old cards. Witch is something that can be done in other ways. Also, I don't think powercreep is necessary at all in digital ccg because you could nerf these new strong cards
@jmurray111010 күн бұрын
Yeah battle cry feels like it should be a trigger for combat effects more than a basic summon Reinforce might have been a better term as the monster is being summoned to reinforce your champion

Missing the timing I understand for some effects like negation of activation or effect but chainblocking to force a fizzle isn’t fun If and when shouldn’t be this difficult Also more of a formatting thing but semi colons to indicate cost

Out of curiosity what is your opinion on TCG's with odd shaped cards? The reason I got back into TCG and want to make my own was because I found my old Heroscape cards from the board game. They always made me wish for more games with unique layouts. I'm a video game dev so I was thinking it would be an interesting direction to go since I don't have to worry about how it feels in the players hands.
@ShardTCG6 күн бұрын
If you're going digital, then choose any shape you like. But for physical cards, I would recommend keeping to a standard size to remain compatible with other assets such as card sleeves and deck boxes. Custom shapes can be an increased cost when looking into production, but if you are a digital game, then, of course, none of these limitations apply.
@petersmythe646213 күн бұрын
We know how to prevent infinite combos because we live in a world where infinite combos are impossible. The problem is this means everything needs to have cost and there need to be hard conservation laws. How are you gonna do that in a mechanically interesting TCG?
@petersmythe646213 күн бұрын
And even then it does not prevent overpowered combos. You know, one neutron generates two generates four generates eight etc.

Re: how to balance l first turn advantage? Make everything interaction and turns only affect who plays first in an open game state, with untap and draw phases being simultaneous.
@petersmythe646213 күн бұрын
There is a slight second turn advantage here in that I can play my card with equal spell speed on top of yours if I go second. This does encourage passing your turn if you think that both you and your opponent have equal spell speed cards that can be played in an open game state but would be better with played as a reaction to one another. To counter this tendency, one option would be to double down on second turn advantage by making passing on an open game state forfeit the right to counter at equal spell speed.
@petersmythe646213 күн бұрын
I feel like discarding a card every time you play a card is a pretty deadly effect.l against a deck that isn't full of graveyard effects. Not quite a yata but it is still going to mean everything your opponent does is -2 card advantage.

For my game I went practical. Partially just because I don't have photoshop skills. The practical part of the design is more that the relevant stats of a card are always viable by being in the upper left. With the game being a Deckbuilding game, I put the Cost in the upper right (where magic has theirs) because it doesn't matter in hand. To me, you make sure all your needed info is where it can be seen when needed, then make it all look good. I will post few pictures of my cards in your Discord.
@SwiftJustice15 күн бұрын
My best advice. Make the game you want to play but doesn't exist. Don't make what people like or what sells or what other people make. Just make that one game YOU want. Unapologetically.

Good art featured prominently on your card game is one of the most important aspects of any TCG/CCG. If you can't compel someone to collect them by their looks, it'll be a lot harder to hook them on gameplay too. That last design shown is actually top-tier work for an indie TCG. Simple yet evocative, add floating text over the bottom half of the image for your card effects. Perfect, simple design. Will likely also look great in foil with minimal work. (Gold/Silver foil stamp the borders, numbers, and text- Maybe add texture to card/image if you're feeling fancy) Shard, I highly recommend you check out Monster Club TCG if you haven't yet. Phenomenal work.

You can get quite creative with art bleeding. I had a section on it that didn't make it to the video. I say, if you can do it, go for it. It's fun for the artist and for the players.
