Thank you for this video! Yesterday we installed a Skycamp 3.0 on a Prinsu rack on a 200 series Land Cruiser. The idea of removing the crossbars from the rack, installing on the tent then mounting it all on the rack is priceless. Thanks for sharing with us. Likely saved us hours of troubles.

Looks great... I have to look back but I don’t remember you doing a lay down inside to give us an idea how much room for another person and possibly a little gear above head or beside two people. I check their site and it looks like they do offer an awning but not an enclosure. They do offer locks for the mounts but you have another challenge as they could just unscrew your rack rails and take the tent, mounts and rails in one package. The rack team needs to come up with a way to cover and lock down those mounting screws. Or possibly you could make it harder using a special security screw that requires a special tool typically people would not have. It sure does look good on that new rack. Thanks for sharing the install.

10:50 I’m just thinking out loud, but wouldn’t it be interesting if ikamper sold models with a trapdoor in the floor to exit into a vehicles sunroof or onto your flatbed if you have a pickup truck? I don’t know if there are many practical uses for it, but I imagine kids would enjoy climbing up and down through a hole in the floor.

So you ever wish you had instilled it further back in order to still have a little of the sunroof available?
@4XPEDITION4 жыл бұрын
You can’t do that. The rack mounts to specific points on the roof. If you mean the tent, I could have put it toward the back and leave the front open but that pushes more weight to the rear of the wheel base where the rest of the gear is stored and puts autumnal strain on the rear axle.
@ABSVabeautifulsunsetvlog4 жыл бұрын
4XPEDITION yeah I meant the tent. I think for me the dilemma will be do I want to give up my sunroof? But you’re right about the weight distribution, so great food for thought. Thanks Scott.

Your 3.6R looks great with the new rack. Very expensive, but I guess compared to a mini pull behind or the hassle of a freestanding tent of the same size and quality, not so bad. You could rig a pulley system and store the unit on the ceiling of your garage where it can just be raised and lowered into place as needed.

This is a great video! Answered all the questions I ever had about roof top tents. This particular tent looks great! My only problem is the same old problem I have with most roof top tents. And that is the price. I simply will not pay $3500 for a tent that will be used maybe a dozen times a year. . I'll just keep using my ground tent.
@4XPEDITION5 жыл бұрын
I can understand that. I use mine two to three times a month year round.
@es0terra5 жыл бұрын
Scott ...if you camp 2-3 times a month...let’s say an average of two nights per camp out....your looking at and average of 72 nights spent in the tent per year. At $3500, it costs you $48.61 per night....thefirst year. Far better cost than a hotel room. And let’s say you use the skycamp mini for 5 years, averaging 360 total nights....your cost per night drops down to ONLY $9.72 per night! AMAZING COST SAVINGS!!!! That sure beats getting mauled by a grizzly or a mountain lion at night while sleeping in a tent on the ground. 😉😉

Scott the new model iKamper looks so much more integrated than the first model you had… I’ll agree it is an expensive part of your adventure equipment, but the alternative of a tent etc is cumbersome and motel rooms are simply throwing money away needlessly.

It made a world of difference switching to the mini with the Prinsu Rack.
@MrFlabberface4 жыл бұрын
Hey Scott, you have some great videos and made the decision to go forward with purchasing a standard Prinsu for my 2017 Forester XT after seeing your setup. Will likely be moving forward with the iKamper mini as well in Jan. So my question pertains to how much cargo space you have left on top of the rack, behind the iKamper? Could you fit a 2 gallon Rotopax can up there? I also have a Wilco hitch and could mount it there like you have it on your OB but I have serious concerns about the lack of tongue weight support with the Forester- 150 lbs max according to Subaru.
@4XPEDITION4 жыл бұрын
I can realistically keep a set of short traction boards and a single pelican case up there. So, absolutley you can keep rotopax. I push my tent toward the front of the rack and keep the back area open for that kind of gear because it moves the weight toward the center of the vehicle.
@MrFlabberface4 жыл бұрын
4XPEDITION Yep that’s great info. Another question occurred to me to ask you. I saw that you use two expeds side by side, but from the dimensions I’ve seen for those and the iKamper mini, they seem wider together than the area of the part of the mini’s platform that folds out. Any issues with fitment of those? Also looked at the exped duo and Sea to Summit’s comfort plus but both dimensions seem wider than that area allows. Thanks again for your quick reply!

Hi Steven! Good for you on the Subi! Well, I really have had no issues other than on my Skycamp 4-person I used to have on one occassion had a small roof leak but then I came to find out that it was my fault. There is a waterproof flap along the roofline that I had bunched up and wasn't doing its job. Since that time I have had no problems with either tent.
