Prof. Hans Rosling died on February 17, 2017. Way too early. He had a genuine and unique way of presenting "boring" statistics in a way anybody can understand. Somewhat criticized for being _too positive_ he continued to show that the overall situation for many persons have become better. But with this presentation he showed that it came with a cost. A cost that our children will have to pay for, and we don't know whether there will be any grandchildren if this world order continues as it does today.

I mean, everyone dies eventually, and I think he lived his life as fully/positively as he could. It's super sad that he's gone, but the best thing to do is carry on his message and livelihood into your own life. It's thanks to people like Hans that the world is more educated and prosperous than it's ever been, so let's keep that trend going! Also worth noting that he didn't die from anything related to sword swallowing, it was pancreatic cancer.

He is trying to change our steryotype about developing countries and L.E.D.Cs. Developing countries are rising in the health and quality of live areas while L.E.D.Cs are doing well when compared to where they are coming from. He also makes important points about the development of any nation highlighting the importance of setting a goal of better health and culture and acheiving it through economic growth and governance.

The reference of GDP per capita is misleading because this reveals nothing about the concentration of ownership of assets (i.e., land and capital goods and finance reserves) and income. A main reason for the decline in health and life expectancy in the United States is not difficult to comprehend. Income and wealth are increasingly concentrated, leaving a higher and higher portion of the population left with a subsistence level existence. This is not a result of some natural law but the fact that the U.S. system of law and taxation significantly benefits a "rent-seeking" minority over those who produce goods and provide needed services. The U.S. government keeps no statistics on the ownership of land. Roughly half of the land area is held by government at all levels. According to the best estimates of economists (e.g., Mason Gaffney, Fred Foldvary, Nicholas Tideman) who have studied land markets and ownership, over 95% of the LAND VALUE in the U.S. is held by fewer than 5% of the population, plus foreign nationals and corporate interests. For two-thirds of U.S. households the amount of land owned is that beneath a primary residence. If the property is within a high rise condominium their proportion of land ownership is nominal. And, of course, one-third of all households own no land at all. Their primary asset is likely to be an automobile. The connections are indisputable for anyone willing to think about our history and the ongoing movement of people from the land by force of one form or another. The solution is one in recent years put forward by former World Bank economist Joseph Stiglitz: change the way government raises revenue from the taxation of earned income, of capital goods and commerce and impose an annual tax on the potential rental value of land and land-like assets (e.g., the broadcast spectrum). This is the only real path to ending poverty in any country.

Excellent! Wonderful! I liked the presentation! Facts! Disputable, re-testable, provable facts! Such a far cry from the "the oceans could be evaporating and causing increased CO2" argument that I was met with only a month ago. I like it because I can postulate that increased temperature could cause increased CO2 emission from animals; like insects, plankton, bacteria... I really think it's worth further investigation.

there are many people living in west just the same way, even worst. The reason for that is different. Also its a different topic by itself. What he is suggesting that is, developing countries are catching up faster than how developed nations did in the same time period with their available wealth, power and global influence.

You make a good point. Is it sensible to represent the USA only one bubble when it's clear that the society is better represented economically by two separate bubbles? Averages mean little whenever the underlying distribution is bimodal.

reason for this faster social development in developing world is because, 1. Governments (not all) are spending more on healthcare and education. 2. Technology transfer from west + local R&D 3. Low cost - of living, education, transportation, communication, healthcare

Yes I think the term is relative poverty.Obesity and smoking is more prominent amongst those with very low incomes but I think people on relatively good incomes also have these problems.A global ban on smoking/tobacco products would help people in the Western societies and since the tobacco companies are actively targeting people in developing/third world countries, and aiming their campaigns specifically at younger people a global ban would make the world a healthier place.

atmospheric composion of Mars: 95.72% CO2, avg temp:-46C. So maybe, yeah you have a model comparission; however, using "pollution" for GHG is ok because GHGs include CH4, N2O, and O3, all which are produced by industry. But I will try to be more specific in the future.

For Alan: The ocean does not emit carbon dioxide; carbon dioxide is released from the process of oxidation inside animals or other single-celled organisms. Thus, if you are calling the oceans and their contents "the ocean" then you are de facto admitting that human beings are also not just in heir environment but a part of it as well.

Stunning Final!! However I must partially disagree on India's PM CO2 statement. CO2 per Capita is baised towards the countries with high population growth rate, like India. And it is precisely population growth the main driver of CO2 consumption, much more than Consumption per capita. So while the developed countries must reduce its consumption, developing countries must urgently enforce population control measures, even if it has to be China's one-child-policy.

@rurede4dis It was an argument for his theory. He said that the seamingly (sorry for bad english) possible is possible. That means that just because you havn't seen it, it doesn't have to be impossible. Just because you havn't seen a man swallow a sword, doesn't mean it's impossible to do so. In other words, he is saying that we can change the world, even though it looks pretty bad.

Your point is relevant. In the US, any child born alive is counted at a live birth. In Many European countries, Sweden included, if a child is born weighing less than 500 grams, it is not counted as a live birth. Newborns less than 500 grams are more likely to die. So comparisons are not always apples to apples.

Yes, one dollar a day is arbitrary. (well, it was actually chosen after a lot of research, but that's besides the point). Why not use 2$ a day? I didn't say anything about the decreasing or increasing purchasing power of the dollar w.r.t. time. Just that it changes between countries. I insist that life expectancy is a better indicator. If the government gives you free food, housing and healthcare but no cash benefits, you're better off than living on 1$ a day.

to arliben: I don't think he's saying there's a causal relationship between life expectancy and family size. There is a correlation that we can see just by looking at the graphed data, and that's all he's saying. He chose those two factors because they are often assumed to be some of the biggest differences between 1st and 3rd world countries. "Manipulation of data" is interpretation. It's only bad when the manipulation is intended to decieve, which isn't happening here.
