What does an Aegean Macedonian have to say about her identity, and what she experienced at the hands of the Greek government?
In today's episode of #MariosHistoryTalks, we sit down and interview Olga, an Aegean Macedonian whose experiences as part of the Decata Begalci took her from her native Macedonia to camps in Poland, to Canada and finally America.
We also ask her perspective on lot of the controversial issues facing Macedonia and Greece today!

I think "Baba" has very selective memory. When she said she forgot who was fighting who I almost fell from my chair. I will not write the whole history of the Balkans here but what she calls the "Partisans" were the Soviet backed communists. The slavic minority in North Greece first sited with the Bulgarian army which occupied northern Greece with the Germans and then when the Germans were pushed out they decided to side with the Soviet-backed communists against non communists (she calls them fascist) . If they hadn't sided with the occupying Bulgarian army and communists and conspire against Greece nothing would happen to them. Greece was in possession of that village since 1913. So stop playing the injured and tell the whole story.

A truly interesting interview, she paints a great picture of how things used to be back then. Also, I have a suspicion that back then nobody really cared about ideology. Most people were only interested in their nation's survival, the peasants didn't wake up thinking "Today I will die for the communist utopia", they only cared about their families and their people, and only took a side when they were forced to.

Your statement is not true. If your hypothesis is correct then an equal number of slavs should have sited with the Greeks fighting against the communists. How do you explain that most "slavs" sited with the occupying Bulgarian army and after that with the communists? The first wider resistance movements occurred in northern Greece, where the Bulgarians annexed Greek territories. The first mass uprising occurred around the town of Drama in eastern Macedonia, in the Bulgarian occupation zone. The Bulgarian authorities had initiated large-scale Bulgarization policies, causing the Greek population's reaction. During the night of 28-29 September 1941 the people of Drama and its outskirts rose up. This badly-organized revolt was suppressed by the Bulgarian Army, which retaliated executing 300-500 people in Drama alone.[11] An estimated fifteen thousand Greeks were killed by the Bulgarian occupational army during the next few weeks and in the countryside entire villages were machine gunned and looted.[citation needed] The town of Doxato and the village of Choristi are officially considered today Martyr Cities. At the same time, large demonstrations were organized in Greek Macedonian cities by the Defenders of Northern Greece (YVE), a right-wing organization, in protest against the Bulgarian annexation of Greek territories.

@@history_repeats8201 It is to naive to say that people were guilty about comunistic movements . Communistic manifest was written by Germans and never it is utopia . You must learn it too , because communism is coming after high economical prosperity of Nations . We know very well what is communism but it is to early to be implemented . You cannot make communism in poverty ! As you can see socialism is over , but every country have socialistic plan on protecting working class all over the World . And please stop with your rethorics about Macedonian being Bulgar ! @@Martin-gd7vy Not true. Please spend a little time to read history. The Greek liberation movement had two armies. One of the armies was the communists and the other was the national army. After the removal of the Germans these two couldnt agree how to divide power and with the instigation of the British who wanted the communists gone started the Greek civil war.

My grandgrandmother was in black all her life for her son 18 years old that died, without a husband that went working in France and never came back. In the neighborhood all the people have their stories about the suffering. Our firat neighbour end up in hospital because she couldn't handle the trauma from the rapes od the Greeks and there she died. My grandfather would always cry when he was telling us what has happened. About the cutting tounges, rapes, beating, burning, killing. There are such sad stories and it hurts when you see people not aknowledging what has happened.

My father was from the same area but born much before this lady during the last days of Ottoman rule. His great grandfather was a Bulgarian priest and his grandfather’s sister was married to Tchakaroff’s brother. Anyone from that are knows who he was. Greeks cut off his head and paraded it throughout the area. My family moved to Bulgaria a year or two after Greek occupation. Many of our people in later years were just shipped off by the Greeks to other countries including Russia. Families separated and sent to varias countries. Some who stayed were jailed if they spoke the old Macedonian-Bulgarian dialect as it was known in those days before Tito. The Aegeska dialect was much different than that in Pirin and each village had a slightly different one. Lots of tragedies but what gets me is that the Greeks cry the most but they were the Turks favorites so to say and would backstab the committees and turn them in to the Turks while acting as if they were working with our forefathers. Many who stayed became Hellenized and believed the brainwashing and became Greeks. I understand that now some families who remained in Macedonia and Thrace still speak an old dialect but only between themselves. But the past is the past and it’s over. Too bad that history is being rewritten by those who were born or raised in Serbia/ Yugoslavia and under communism. By the way, if anyone is from Niagara Falls/Buffalo NY, Tchakalaroff had a sister who lived there but I don’t think she had children but I could be wrong. Let me know if anyone else is from Smurdesh, Kostur. The best pita is from Aegeska…

I’m a Macedonian living in Australia. My dedo came here in the 50s. He’s 90 years old now. He and all my family around his age tell me the same thing. The Greeks ethnically cleansed the Macedonians. They banned their language, they burned their homes, they forcefully re-migrated them. They have real stories of horrible persecution. Yet Greeks deny this testimony and say this is all made up. It’s this type of denial of our history, of our story, of our identity … it’s this smugness and self absorption which causes Macedonians to harbour this hatred toward them.

I love listening to old people's stories, but I also try to spot inconsistencies or bias. I am writing this while listening to the video: 1. When she was born in 1941, her village had been called Karyes for over 20 years (since 1920), not Orovnik as she says. 2. She describes events (e.g. Metaxas) before she was born. 3. I gather she didn't migrate to the US at the age of 7 judging by her accent (which isn't truly American), but probably spent a few years in Poland also and migrated in her late teens. Wow... I was right (I am not erasing the previous sentence, I am writing as I am listening to the video). 17 years old as I just heard in the video. 4. When collaborating with the communists and Yugo (that had the intention to grab lands from northern Greece during the Nazi occupation and during the Greek civil war), it is logical to become unwanted in Greece. Your "united Macedonia" irredentist maps don't help this problem become alleviated over the years. 5. "Ethnic cleansing", kind of like what happened to the Greeks living in former FYROM? Monastir (now Bitola) had thousands of Greeks. This term doesn't cut one way, but both ways. In fact, statistics show very few Greeks nowadays in North Macedonia compared to ethnic Macedonians in Greece. One wonders which "ethnic cleansing" was more effective.... As a note to the creator of the video, there were also thousands of Greek children gathered by Greek communists (i.e. paidomazoma) and moved to Yugoslavia to be assimilated as 'Macedonians'. Read the book 'Eleni' by Nicolas Gage. P.S. it would have been nice to add subtitles for the part spoken in the modern Macedonian language. +++EDIT: video showing ethnic cleansing of Greeks in former FYROM: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e3bcqKJje9eYr80

I've noticed you've taken some things out of context, whether intentionally or not, so I just want to address some of your points. 1. Whilst her village was officially renamed as Karyes by the Greek government in 1926, it doesn't remove the fact that the local inhabitants continued to call it Orovnik. 2. She describes events before she was born, as they were passed down by her family, who experienced those events. 4. It's hypocritical for Greece to deny entry to Macedonians who fought on the communist side, but allow Greeks who fought on the communist side to return. It is very racist and discriminatory. 5. I personally am from Bitola, and Bitola didn't have thousands of Greeks. Bitola had Macedonians and Aromanians who were counted and referred to as "Greeks" by the Ottoman millet system, just because they went to the churches that belonged to the Patriarchate of Constantinople, instead of the Bulgarian Exarchate. There was a small Greek minority, but they left during the Balkan Wars, voluntarily. There is no evidence for ethnic cleansing of Greeks in what is today the Republic of Macedonia. 6. It is historically inaccurate to say that thousands of Greek children were gathered by Greek communists and that a new Macedonian identity was forcefully imposed onto them. That's just a conspiracy theory. Those children were Macedonians, and the Macedonian children went to Yugoslavia to live amongst their fellow Macedonians, as they were not allowed to return to Aegean Macedonia. The ethnically Greek children did not go to Yugoslav Macedonia, some of them stayed in the Eastern Bloc and some of them returned to Greece, when Greece opened up the border for them.
@my8osprive

@@elenas2299 1. renaming was on 5/10/1920 not 1926 as you said. The context here is that she first says she was born in 1941 in Orovnik and then she says that the Greek government changed the name to Karyes. This implies that the name-change was done after she was born. So I am putting things IN CONTEXT and setting things straight. 2. we all know how oral history gets distorted and is biased when transmitted. 4. really? why? You admit that they were ethnic Macedonians, i.e. NON-Greeks. So why is it hypocritical to let FOREIGNERS who betrayed Greece to have some sort of claim? 5. You are from Bitola but chances are you weren't born before ww2 or the Greek civil war. Thus, you see the RESULT of ethnic cleansing. Isn't there a Greek cemetery in Bitola? kzbin.info/www/bejne/hGmol42bjtmlfc0 Who are these Greeks then? (Sorry no English subtitles) kzbin.info/www/bejne/e3bcqKJje9eYr80 6. Then google The United Nations issued a resolution condemning the abduction of the Greek children. RESOLUTION ADOPTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE UN DURING ITS FOURTH SESSION. THREATS TO THE POLITICAL INDEPENDENCE AND TERRITORIAL INTEGRITY OF GREECE - 288 (IV) (18 November 1949) Also google the 1952 UN General Assembly which is years later noting that the children (now teenagers and young adults) didn't return. After so many years do you think they weren't assimilated? Georgios Manoukas was the General Inspector of the 1946 Child Gathering (Paidomazoma) and also a former member of KKE (Greek communist Party). He returned disillusioned to Greece during the amnesty period in 1961 and published a book on the child abductions called ‘Paidomazoma’ (‘Child Gathering, The Great Crime against our People’, Georgios Manoukas, 1961). In it he examines Cominform policy towards the children and concludes that the Yugoslav government (Tito) falsified the numbers of these children, integrated them into the population of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and acculturated them into the new ‘Macedonian’ culture. Some children were trained and sent back to Greece to fight against Greeks, indeed as janissaries. One of the five-members council during the child abduction era was a Slavo-Macedonian from Greece named Sikavitsas. This person according to Manoukas was responsible for the Slavophone Greek children. In the so-called Mountain Government of KKE there were also two Slavophone “ministers”. Their names were Metrovsky and Stavro Kocev. They visited those children that were Slavophone and aimed at the elimination of their use of the Greek language. Their lectures used terms such as ‘Macedonian autonomy’, saying “Greece was a creation of the Big Powers” (like Macedonists do today), claiming that “Slavic Macedonians were the only descendants of the ancient Macedonians”, using language such as “freedom to the occupied Aegean Macedonia from the monarchofasists”, the same language we hear from the children of some of the ‘Macedonian’ expats today!

@@elenas2299 To the query, “intentionally or not?” - short answer - YES. And imagine calling people who are known to have lived in these lands for around 2,000 years and have assimilated with the Macedonians, giving them their current language, and evolving together as an ethnicity, ‘foreigners’! And yet the Vlachs, Albanians, Roma, etc who have moved into the former Morea, present-day “Greece,” much later over the following centuries, and made up the majority of the population there, not to mention the numerous others such as the Armenians, Christians Turks, Georgians, etc merely in the past century, are apparently not foreigners. Ya gotta love the logic (for comedic purposes, that is).

_“I love listening to old people's stories, but I also try to spot inconsistencies or bias.”_ I love reading KZbin comments of paranoid visitors and I often spot their inconsistencies and their extreme bias….and lies and distortions. _“1. When she was born in 1941, her village had been called Karyes for over 20 years (since 1920), not Orovnik as she says.”_ So what if, after Bavarian Greece renamed the village to Karves, Baba Olga used the original name of the village in her native Macedonian language as she is entitled to. You are so insecure and such a nitpicker that this bothers you? Sheesh! Mario and Olga even mentioned the current imposed Greek name, yet you still obsess and choose to make an issue out of a non-issue. Oh, and you missed that Olga referred to present-day Florina as Lerin. OH, NO! Take out the coping pills! 😱 _“2. She describes events (e.g. Metaxas) before she was born.”_ Really? Baba Olga mentions the fascistic policy of warped Greco fascist, Metaxas, which is related to what she talks about, and you raise this because….um….um….uh….ummm..….just because? One of your other mentally disturbed regularly-visiting comrades describes events from not only before he was born but dating back a couple of thousand-plus years, and they’re not even related to the video, but that’s okay? Just standard neogreco procedure? _“3. I gather she didn't migrate to the US at the age of 7 judging by her accent (which isn't truly American), but probably spent a few years in Poland also and migrated in her late teens. Wow... I was right (I am not erasing the previous sentence, I am writing as I am listening to the video). 17 years old as I just heard in the video.”_ The age Baba Olga migrated to the US has any significance? Yet the atrocities described are insignificant and overlooked? Wow….I was right - you ARE paranoid. _“4. When collaborating with the communists and Yugo (that had the intention to grab lands from northern Greece during the Nazi occupation and during the Greek civil war), it is logical to become unwanted in Greece. Your "united Macedonia" irredentist maps don't help this problem become alleviated over the years.”_ A pretty rich comment from the biggest land grabbers in the region. Still dreaming of cosmopolitan Constantinople (which was not Greco, just because that was the language of the church, but cosmopolitan, btw)? But let’s correctly call it Istanbul, considering you have a penchant for the most recent names. “United Macedonia” maps are not irredentist maps at all, oh paranoid one. They are historic maps. Everyone has the right to know what Macedonia was like just prior to it being carved up a mere century-plus-a-few years ago. And what’s the name of that fascist neogreco thug who keeps irredentist maps on his office walls, who regularly writes for an irredentist Greco magazine devoted to the topic (perhaps you’re a subscriber?) of his sweet dreams of grabbing these lands at all costs, even murder. Indeed, this demented thug, who publicly posts private details, including the addresses of innocent individuals who don’t share his views, was responsible for the murder of a Turkish official some years back. No doubt he issued death threats to honest Greek professor and writer, Anastasia Karakasidou, and many others. Yes, ‘Sixty Minutes’ and other programs feature Greek atrocities and paranoia on Australian (and international) television. The United Macedonia maps are true and factual maps which illustrate and educate about Macedonian territory just 3 generations ago. The Treaty expiry date is over, dimi. Relax, max. You’re safe now. _“5. Read the book 'Eleni' by Nicolas Gage. P.S. it would have been nice to add subtitles for the part spoken in the modern Macedonian language.”_ Which Greeks living in the part of Macedonia northwards of Baba Olga’s region? Not a Greek to be found northwards of Kastoria as observed by Brailsford and even by honest Greek academics, let alone in Bitola and the rest of Macedonia. [Then known as the *PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF MACEDONIA,* not fyrom - another fascisitc bavarian-greco-imposed name, which insecure FOROGians, aka insecure snowflakes from FCKAM (Former Country Known As Morea, if you prefer), like to use to make themselves feel better, but actually reveal the fascist within. According to Ottoman classifications, Christian Albanians and Vlachs, and even some “Slavs” (including Macedonians) were “Greek” - merely for falling under the Patriarchate church (often just because that was the only church they had access to). The supposed “Greeks” in Bitola were mostly Vlachs who were hellenised (or in the processes of being hellenised, and some were Slavicised….after all, a number of famous Vlachs fought for Macedonia, not Greece). Supposed “Greeks” were less than 10% of the TOTAL population of ALL of Macedonia (that includes the southern part annexed to Greece….which Greece promptly named ‘Northern Greece.’ That’s how much they loved Macedonia…they erased the name). In the whole of Macedonia, some Greeks could be found living alongside Turkish villages in Chalkadiki, as this part of Macedonia had been COLONISED by the Greeks, and there was a Greek MINORITY in Salonika, which was by far, a Jewish city with numerous and varied minority groups, for millennia. As Brailsford, like many others, noted, “The average Greek or Hellenised Vlach in Macedonia, who professes to believe that the whole population is Greek, is doubtless to a great extent the *VICTIM OF HIS DAILY IMPRESSIONS.”* That’s because those who desire to be “Greeks,” no matter their true ancestry, are capable of pushing the truth aside and embracing their fantasies as fact, “It is a sorry transition to turn from this DREAM of a REVIVIED Hellenism which is to civilise the Near East once more, to the ACTUALITIES of Greek politics. *One may say of the Greeks with equal truth that they are capable of superb devotion to an idea, or that they are the READY VICTIMS of any catch-word or abstraction.”* Brailsford “If one takes the linguistic test, *there are practically no villages in European Turkey whose mother-tongue is Greek* ……Salonica is nevertheless predominantly a Jewish town, while Constantinople is hopelessly cosmopolitan. Historically their claims are no better. The Byzantine Empire had no footing in the interior of Macedonia after it had ceased to be Roman and international, and had become patriotic and Greek. The Greek claim rests mainly upon this, that there is still a large faction of the Macedonian population which, *EITHER FROM FEAR, from SUPERSTITION, or from PREFERENCE,* remains within the "Greek" Orthodox (i.e., the Patriarchist) Church. *These people are Vlachs, Albanians, Serbs, or other Slavs of uncertain origin, but they are no more Greeks than the Orthodox Russians are.”* MACEDONIA: ITS RACES AND THEIR FUTURE by H. N. Brailsford Fun fact: The use of the Greek language in church does not magically transform the congregation into ethnic Greeks. Ditto having a Greek name.

As for Nicholas Gage and his Pan “Macedonian” Association buddies…… One wonders where the documentation of the supposed ethnic cleansing of these Greeks by Macedonians, or by Yugoslavia, is hidden. Academics, including historians and anthropologists have recorded, documented and helped produce documentary films about the Macedonian ethnic cleansing by Greece. Never heard of Greek ethnic cleansing by Macedonians or even by ‘Yugoslavs.’ Grecos constantly cry about the Turkish genocide against grecos but forget to mention the Greek genocides against the Turks, which, by all accounts, were far more atrocious. As a note to the writer of these nonsensical empty comments, who didn’t grasp what Baba Olga was saying, she actually mentions that a small number of the child refugees during the civil war were Greek, albeit a minority, so what is your issue here? At least most were permitted to return, unlike the Macedonians, though many chose not to because of Greek treatment of their own people. No Greek was ever “moved to be assimilated as Macedonians” [your posts are getting more ridiculous by the day] as you state, based on the political bias of Nicholas Gage (whose book I own and HAVE read). These families already identified as Macedonian. They were strong enough to resist the brutal hellenisation program of Bavarian Greece. Gage implies that all the children were Greek and all were ‘kidnapped’ which is simply not true. Gage’s claims hold no water and writing a book about his experiences and framing it in such a (deceitful) way does not make his claims true. In fact, L Danforth, who has thorough knowledge of the child refugee issue, regarding the Pan “Macedonian” Association’ {read wanna-be-both-Greek-and-neomacedonians} distortions and Gage’s exaggerations, (untruths) states that they and Gage are suffering from ‘victimhood.’ Nice little euphemism there. Ah, yes - victimhood - dimi’s middle name. Danforth states that the Macedonian children were not allowed to return to their native, ancestral villages (unless they complied with Greek lies) but many actual Greeks REFUSED to return. Danforth describes Gage’s inaccurate perspectives as “glossed over in *a reductionistic master narrative of victimhood.”* At the Princeton seminar, the ‘Pan Macedonian Associaton’ kept distrupting proceedings and refused to accept points which could be verified, unlike their own claims which had no substance. Ah, yes - victimhood - dimi’s middle name. “Although in a few cases children who were taken to Eastern Europe may legitimately be called “hostages” the extension of this label to *all* refugee children from the Greek Civil War is *a gross exaggeration that is convincingly contradicted by our own research and by other authoritative sources, such as the reports of UNSCOB and the International Red Cross.* Cage’s claim *ignores the fact* that the repatriation of the refugee children was made difficult by *both* the communist authorities in Eastern Europe *and the Greek government * (Hradecny 2005; Lagani 1996). It also ignores the fact that in the mid-fifties a substantial number of refugee children *were allowed* to return to their families in Greece, but *many refused to do so.* In this polarised account, which places all the victims on one side, the difficult process through which the victims and their families decided whether to return to Greece is *GLOSSED OVER IN A REDUCTIONISTIC MASTER NARRATIVE OF VICTIMHOOD.”* The Politics of Memory Creating a Meaningful Past p265 “Although the Greek Civil War was a conflict between right and left, in the eyes of the Greek right, communists were by definition Slavs, not Greeks (Gounaris 2002, 65). According to this view, the refugee children were abducted on purpose so that they could be turned into “Slavocommunists.” ”The fact that half the children were native speakers of Macedonian and *came from families who defined themselves as “Macedonians” before they left Greece* is ignored.” [That Greek selective-memory syndrome that Frank Reed writes about.} “The Greek right presents these Macedonian-speaking children as “Greek” children who were “Slavicised” after they were taken to Eastern Europe.” And dimi fell for this. There you go, dimi. Macedonian minority problem solved by the PMA ……or so they thought. Also interesting is how Greeks in the past, even up to the point of the civil war, knew the difference between Greeks and Macedonians. “Greek nationalists are also appalled by the fact that the Greek Communist Party in exile *explicitly recognised the identity of these Slavic-speaking children as Macedonians and referred to them as “Macedonian children”* (Makedonopoula).” In light of the contemporary controversy over the name under which the Republic of Macedonia should be internationally recognised, the frequent use of this term [Macedonian children] *more than fifty years ago* by the Greek Communist Party in Eastern Europe, *amply documented by historical evidence, undermines many of the arguments used by Greek nationalists”* [and dimi] to prevent the Republic of Macedonia from being recognised under its constitutional name. This is why members of the Pan “Macedonian” Association suggested that we doctored the photograph (lol) we showed at the Princeton seminar that depicted a group of children at a summer camp in Poland in 1950 standing under a sign identifying them as ‘expatriate Greek *and* Macedonian children’ ” ekpatrismena Ellinopoula kai Makedonopoula;” Children of the Greek Civil War - Refugees and the Politics of Memory Loring M. Danforth and Riki Van Boeschoten Pan “Macedonian” Association and Mr Gage accusing academics from a respected university of “doctoring” evidence. Too funny! Just like a Greek nationalist claimed to a colleague of Borza that the photographs Borza had taken which proved Macedonians identified as such in the 1800s (roughly when the “Greek” identity as an ethnicity took root) had been ‘doctored.” Wow! Imagine what they could have done with Photoshop in those days! What a unique national philosophy - deny and eliminate the existence of others in order to prove your own. NeoHellenism - Reeking of desperation. “The claim is an excellent example of what has been called *Greek exceptionalism,* an approach to *Greek history focusing on its singularity that refuses to situate historical events in a broader comparative framework* (Beaton 2009, 6; Conway 2004; Gallant 1997). ….This ‘moralising impulse; as Hayden White (1981) has called it, was more than evident both during the Princeton seminar and in the Pan-Macedonian Association’s response.” Ah, yes - victimhood - dimi’s middle name. Imagine writing a 1,463-character comment and saying nothing. That’s victimhood for you.

You have no idea what's it like to live here with both propagandas, they've built a whole mythology around stories like this. My grandpa Angelaki was agean and sure had one but never dwelled on it until it escalates in hatred. It's easy not to have to face the repercussions and to be a nationalist from far away. Marios answered with "Yes" to the following comment: "You think that the designation Macedonian only applies to people that spoke an Idiom originating from Slavic invaders that invaded parts of Macedonia 800+ years after Alexander and you call that with the name of Macedonia? Which ancient historian states that the city of Scupi was part of Macedonia?" He is yet to answer the second question.

@Captain Jack those Slavic invaders settled down across all of the present day Greece including all of the Pelloponese and some of them reached Crete as well. Do you think there was border and visas for them at Evzoni? 😂😂😂😂😂😂 If we are Slavs mixed with ancient Macedonians you are Slav mixture with prosvigiti, pontic turks, hellens and subsaharan tribes of africa. So, think of a better question next time. And you say Scupi was not part Ancient Macedonia, ha? Do you where the Agrianes were coming from-the special forces of Alexander? 2 km near Scupi...so shut that lying propqgandistic mouth of yours. Also Athens was not part of Macedonia what does that have with the phantasy world that you are living jn? Alexander and Phillip, killed your ancestors raped your women amd burned your houses to the ground, but hey you claim them to be Greeks eventhough there isnt one single ancient source that mentions Greece, Greeks or Kingdom of Greece!

Mario, Im Macedonian. History telling us that Slavic people came from Karpati 5-6 c of new era. But they cant give us any proof, of life in that region, buildings, which language they were speaking, where they lived actually, etc. It would be good topic for video. Bcs UK history sucks sometimes. Also, Macedonians, as they are described, they were tall, brown hair, fighters in spirit... God bless, baba Olga.

I am a proud Macedonian who lives in Australia. I only speak Greek because for 3000 years Macedonia has been largely Greek speaking. Anything other than this is pure politics nothing more nothing less and shows a complete ignorance of the historical nature of Macedonia - note 3000 years - it is a long time and a lot of history to get your head around. My self conscience is Greek. I attend Greek church and "feel" Greek. Having said that successive governments as they did in Greece in the 40s and across the border in Yugoslavia, Albania and Bulgaria have terrorised Greek speakers as much as the Greek government in the 1940s did the same to Slav-Bulgarian speakers in Macedonia. It was terrible times for everyone and the stories I know are just as bad and just as many from the other side of the coin. There are two sides to every story. It is always the poor people that suffer in wars. Above all we must remember that - NO ONE WINS IN WAR. I wish and pray that there will be some form of healing at some point instead of the same stories circulating around and around over and over raising old wounds that no one can go back to correct. We all know them from all sides of the political and ethnic perspective here in Australia Greeks hate Macedonians and Macedonians hate Greeks etc etc. Let me repeat that I wish and pray because thankfully one of the major concerns from the 1940s onwards as a Greek from Macedonia was never about other language groups or identities living in a larger geographical Macedonia but about atheistic communism that was being spread from the former communist countries I just mentioned. That is undeniable my friends doesn't matter what you know about history. Thankfully with the collapse of the old Soviet Union and a maintenance of our Orthodox Faith in former eastern bloc countries we can relearn what it is to be Christian and above all part of a European family again. Let us join hand in hand as Balkan brothers and sisters and acknowledge that we should never go down this path again. In Jesus name Amen.

Why you people insist of calling yourselves ''Macedonians'' when you are Bulgarians. You speak Bulgarian you sound Bulgarian you have the same heroes as Bulgaria the Bulgarians themselves consider you to be Bulgarian. I understand that at present the Bulgarian State is blocking the way of the inappropriately called North Macedonian State to the European Union until you admit that you are Bulgarian. The reason why you suffered during the years after the end of the second in Greece is because during the Greek civil war you aligned yourselves with with the Greek Communist Party and committed unimaginable atrocities against the local Greek Macedonian Population (the true descendants of Ancient Macedonia) like the abduction of tens of thousands of true Macedonian Greek kids who were then given for adoption throughout Communist East Europe. Very few of you, if any at all, were expelled from Greek territory after the end of the Civil war because you voluntarily followed the Greek Communists across the border into Albania and Yugoslavia. I am a Greek living in Belgium since the age of 17 (I am 70 now) and when Yugoslavia broke up in the 90ies and the ''Macedonian question'' blew up I had a housekeeper who was from the area, she had been born in Greece and during the civil war had fled across the border to Yugoslavia she spoke fluent Greek (like her mother tongue) and what she called ''Macedonian'' of which I did not understand a word. Up to then I considered her as a Greek Communist who had fled the civil war with her family to Yugoslavia, like many other Greek communists had done, and had never asked her about the circumstances of her story. But now I had the opportunity to find out from someone close to me a first hand account of this whole affair . I asked her about the circumstances of her fleeing across the Border and she told me the following: Officers of the Greek Democratic Army (the Communists) came to the village and told them that they had to evacuate the village because the Greek National Army (the Ani-Communist Royalists) were approaching. They also told them that this evacuation was to be temporary as the Communists were going to prevail in the ensuing battle.....the Communists off course did not pre- vail and they found themselves living ever since in the southern region of Yugoslavia. She was totally confused: confused as to what she was : Greek or Slav. I asked her a second question: was ''Macedonian'' ''Bulgarian'' and she said yes, in fact she said that because, at that time, it was difficult to get in Belgium, ''Macedonian'' newspapers and Magazines they were reading the Bulgarian Press. To my question as which language they used at home she said Greek although some families in her old village spoke ''Bulgarian'' which in Yugoslavia they told them to refer as ''Macedonian''. The ''Macedonian'' Identity was a contraption of Tito intended not against Greece but against Bulgaria so that Bulgaria would not lay claim to the territory of Southern Yugoslavia which is indeed occupied by Bulgarians who were brainwashed to call themselves ''Macedonians'' an identity belonging exclusively to Hellenes (the proper word to call Greeks) indeed the Ancient Glory of Macedonia is referred to by Historians everywhere as the ''Hellenistic'' period.

The series of videos you are posting only serve as a testament and proof to the argumentation and fears of the Greeks as to what the real concealed and camouflaged positions of the Northern Macedonians of Slavic origin, are. You conveniently forget that Greek Macedonia is populated by a solid ethnic Greek population of roughly 2,500,000 people. You also discount, again conveniently, the fact that there was a movement of population from both sides when today's borders were set, not in any numerically important sense anyway. Whatever you have been conditioned to believe, rest assured that it will never be accepted by those people of classical education.

To all the Bulgarians and Greeks: we speak Macedonian; The Slavic dialects which naturally evolved in the region of Macedonia from Slavic migrations centuries ago. “Bulgaria” doesn’t own the South Slavic dialects. They adopted our language from St’s Cyril and Methodius and are sharers of the slavic language. We are not Bulgars or Thracians. We are Macedonians and our DNA vindicates it. We have more Mediterranean alleles and phenotypes than the Greeks themselves (who have far more Ethiopian genetic markers than any other Mediterranean ethnicity). We do not have Turkic and Thracian admixture, we have a Mediterranean/slavic admixture. Macedonians do not understand Bulgarian nor do we speak it. The Macedonians are those who live in Macedonia and have lived there for centuries. These are the people who are the descendants of the Ancient Macedonians. Regardless of the regions cultural and linguistic evolution, we are the people who descend from the Macedonians of antiquity, the early Middle Ages, the Middle Ages, and the high Middle Ages because OUR people lived there for centuries. The Macedonians who once spoke a language closer to Greek, who then ended up speaking Koine Greek, who then ended up speaking Slavic Macedonian are the same one people. We never left, we simply evolved as ALL HUMANS throughout history have done.

A lot of this story doesn’t fit with time lines first instance is when she was 7 year old the war was finished for hole 3 years born in 1941 most of this story have big holes and wrong information like she learned this thing from script. All wars made a lot of people around the world to suffer in different ways but people should remember to tell the truth about their experiences and not giving propaganda stories just to be able to create falls histories hope this is not one of them

Very late in my life I have realised that children were protected actually , like today we can see that internationally children are always protected ! That is why they don't know what was real happening ! Even the Hellas government was not inferior back in that time . They were saving children too because of very bad political situation for which Slav Macedonian "were" guilty . There was political persecution to Macedonian even they were not guilty and were not involved in political scene ! We remember how long was composer Mr Theodorakis in prison and deported out of Hellas ! Take today situation in Palestine and in Ukraine No indoctrination was possible because they were children and it is symptomatic how new generation Greeks do not feel regret ! There was very bad period in Greece ! Up to 1974 it was closed country !

Hello Mario and greetings from Prilep, You did great work with this interview, probably more then you yourself understand.. We must record conversations with our elders, they lived through our history and its important to have it on tape because when they pass away the living link of memory is lost forever. This then makes it easy for Bulgarians and Greeks to make claims on who they where and what they did, so thanks for doing what your doing
