The one most important key factor that sold me this setup is the versatility of being able to use the iPad as a laptop and a tablet as well. As a nursing major, the iPad and magic keyboard is just enough for me. I personally don’t need all of the big MacOs softwares and video editing softwares. I love the fact that you can take handwritten notes on this device and also be able to type documents with the magic keyboard. Yes, the magic keyboard alone and iPad together is pricey, but I think that it is a great investment if you have the money to afford it.

A recommendation about schoolwork: I've been using a first gen iPad Pro for school for a couple of years now, and with online courses and TA/HR work I found it was really difficult for the university IT department to support it through their security systems. I also had to jump through a lot of hoops to export a file to an online upload portal in Canvas. I gave in this year and bought a MacBook Air specifically for the heavy writing assignments graduate school requires. I still prefer my iPad for personal and creative work, and will upgrade to the new Pro and this Magic Keyboard sometime soon. The Lidar scanner will be really useful for the architectural design work I'm doing. Thanks, Justine.

Thank you for answering my question! So glad to know you can pick up the iPad/Magic Keyboard combo from the bottom section of the case near the track pad. Picking up the iPad from that area on the Smart Keyboard folio causes the case to bend and causes unintentional key presses.

To the student who wanted to know if they should get a MacBook or an iPad: as a 3rd year stem major, I just got an iPad and I’m in love with it. It helps a lot with organizing note taking, easy to download powerpoints and have them side by side w your notes (or just take notes on the actual PowerPoint), allows lab worksheets to be uploaded straight to the iPad and more ! if you’re a major that will be writing a lot of essays and such I would go with the MacBook, but if you are in a major that requires an incredible amount of note takin, I would highly suggest an iPad. I use a chrome book just to type out essays from prereq classes and lab reports as needed, it gets the job done! Now that I’m here... does anybody actually know if the magents on this case are strong enough to support a case on the iPad? When I take it off to take notes I want it to be protected and I don’t wanna carry around 2 cases all the time xD

The magnets may be strong enough, albeit the Magic Keyboard will not connect to the Smart Connector with a case on it. You could always skin the back of the iPad to protect from scratches. I think Justine recommends dbrand.

carrieliizabeth Just saw your post. I also recommend the Air for heavy writing assignments, and it's been seamless for our university IT group to work with the Air for my TA and HR requirements. They were able to remotely port into the Air to set up our security protocols. They couldn't do that with my iPad. I love my old first gen iPad Pro too, but I'm just about ready to trade it in for this new beast. What a beauty!

I’ve had an iPad for school for the past 5 or so years and it genuinely is 100% worth it. I’m now a senior engineering student and this ipad is irreplaceable in my opinion. For anyone who specifically is considering ipad or Mac for engineering purposes, here’s my take: I have both an IPad and a MacBook and both are amazing, however i use my ipad wayyyyyyy more. I only use my MacBook for writing papers that require a lot of references (ipad doesnt have a good reference manager i dont think) and coding. My ipad is what i use for pretty much everything else. With engineering, sometimes you need specific software, but keep in mind that they can be very CPU heavy and you may need a fully specked MacBook ($$$) to use them without any problems. Another thing to note is that usually universities have desktops with built-in software available for student use, but they dont offer anything that can replace the portability of an ipad. I haven’t bought a notebook in 6 years and every single one of my notes is backed up so I always have them with me.

I learned two key things from this video that I’ve not seen anywhere else. 1. Flipping the keyboard allows you to have an angled base to draw/write on, similar to a drafting table. 2. I really loved your idea of removing the iPad and placing it on the folded case to protect the back of the iPad. I have a question about #2, however. When you write/draw on the iPad that way, does it feel like you are risking scrunching the keyboard in the case?

Just from the point of view of college, I am an engineering college professor and I use the Apple ecosystem almost exclusively. The iPad Pro is amazing for note taking and especially in the world we live in now, it is much easier to create and annotate content live when you are presenting the content electronically in a digital classroom environment. That being said, you were absolutely correct that there are just some software packages we use in Engineering that run much slower or sometimes are not even available to run on an iPad. There are also some software packages that are exclusively made for Windows and so it becomes necessary to do dual boots which, at least I think (although I have never tried on an iPad), is much easier to do on a Mac.

​@@martinspedding4210 No, Apple never pays anyone to advertise for them. Apple products are such a big deal in that they don't need to pay anyone to report on their products. What they really do, is provide select early access to Apple events and products. Access to an Apple event is pretty much guaranteed views and traffic so most influencers and journalists behave friendly towards Apple products. It's a quite brilliant (and cost-efficient) marketing strategy, really.

I would take a review more seriously from someone who was not using an iPhone and an apple laptop. Most people use Android devices and yet they think imessage is important...most use WhatsApp or we chat in Asia. It always sounds like Apple advertising and the reality when you use the products is so much worse. Even the mac book 16 inch is a dreadful keyboard.

I just got that set up and the combo of the Air and Magic Keyboard along with the Pencil has effectively replaced my MacBook Air from 2015. The combo makes it a laptop for most functions. I’ve even found that I’m using my iPhone less because it’s just so convenient to grab the iPad with the keyboard and plop it on my lap. The combination of the Air, keyboard, and pencil do push the iPad Air into the price range of a MacBook but I like it for the convenience factor better than I think I would if I’d just gone with the MacBook Air. I love it.

So awesome. Thanks Justine for this follow up. I really would love to get the new keyboard, but... I think I would leave it at work to do more work stuff. My zugucase is so great for all it can do and though the keys-to-go keyboard isn’t super perfect, the small form factor and ease of using and stowing away again makes it great with the combo I think I have right now. Darn... was really trying to justify getting this new keyboard, lol. Too funny
