It's time for a massive showdown featuring two high proof Jack Daniel's Rye Single Barrel Whiskeys. We put Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Barrel Proof Rye up against Jack Daniel's 2020 Special Release Single Barrel Barrel Proof Rye. What I enjoy about this rye is that you can add water as you go (not just once), discovering a new, enjoyable, noteworthy dimension each time. You found one of those new dimensions here, but you never really run out of interesting profiles as you add water. It makes each glass multi-dimensional. I like doing this with friends as a “tasting” but using only one whiskey. The high proofers often stand up to that test, and when they do it’s quite special. 🇺🇸

FWIW: The Jack Bonded Rye is a real sleeper for $37 here in Virginia. You can taste the lineage of Bonded, Single Barrel, and now SBBP ryes from JD. For the more affordable ryes, I’ve always been on Old Forester 100 Rye ($28) guy but the JD Bonded is a nice mid-priced addition. 🇺🇸

I haven’t tried the Special Release so I was really looking for the new Single Barrels to show up here. I bought the first one I found at 127.5 proof. It was so very good. I then found one at 139 proof and it’s EPIC! They did such a great job on these like you did such a great job with this review!

We try not to be homers *too much* but JDBP rye is probably the best high proof rye on the market (BTAC included). It’s amazing what they do with that grain.

I'm basically living in Maker's Mark and Jack Daniel's releases nowadays ... at some point you have to ask yourself how much difference the "Tennessee whisky process" is making with these bottles. Boy are they good.

When the standard sbbp dropped it flew off the shelf now they are on the shelf 6 deep. The rye hasn't hit here yet but I'm sure the same thing will happen people will buy them fast for awhile then it'll calm down and be easier to get. I haven't pulled the trigger yet I'm waiting for the rye then I'll get them both. Lately I'm on a rye kick have a Redwood empire rye and Old Forester open and I really enjoy them both. I was fortunate to do this very thing when these showed up around here. Crazy enough both my 2020 Limited and the new BP Rye were the exact same proof point. My experience was very similar to yours. The 2020 had a brighter profile, with the new BP Rye a deeper darker richer type profile. While different, I find them equally as tasty just in their own lane. I would be hard pressed to pick a favorite as I think it could vary for me day to day with the quality of these bottles. Was very happy to see what should eventually be the "readily available" BP Rye bring the "Limited Release" quality to the shelf. Hopefully it stays that way. Loving the tub time with Mavis :) Cheers!

I’ve sampled the 128 proof and it was good. We have the the 2020 release and definitely prefer it with a drop or two of water. Tub Time with Mavis! 😂😂. Love that cat. Cheers

I had to trade to get the 2023 JD SiBBP Rye (mine is 137 proof!) since the only places that had it close to me were marking it up in price as if it was the Special Release - we're talking $250 to $400, which is just cuckoo-bananas 🙄 That being said, I'm glad I was able to get my hands on it since just about everything that JD puts out in that SiB bottle shape is 🔥🔥🔥 Knowing that I probably won't ever get to try the Special Release, it fights my FOMO to know that it's a similar experience.

Excellent question. We'll have to put them against each other someday. Off the top of our heads, we're leaning rye. It's complex and a great balance of sweet and spicy. Though these are all single barrels, so you never know.

Great job guys. Love your reaction to the high proofers!!! They sell out within hours from being delivered in my area $180.00+ secondary market. Does anyone know if this is an annual release only?

Our understanding is that this will be a more regular release like the Tennessee Whiskey, but we don't know for sure. Hopefully this becomes more widely available and liquor stores stop the price gouging on this one, because everybody should have a chance to enjoy this whiskey.
