After watching this video, I’m sure you’ll understand why many prefer New Jersey over New York. Let’s start with what both states have in common.
First, both have a shrinking population. Yep, they’re losing people. But, New York has more than twice as many people as New Jersey. (NY-19.4 million, NJ- 8.9 million) Most of the population in both states live in the New York metropolitan area, the biggest metropolitan area in the world. Look at that! Despite not having one city within it with a population greater than 300,000, New Jersey is the most densely populated of the 50 states.
Residents of both states are mostly Christian, but both have sizeable minorities who identify as Jewish and Muslim.
Both do share quite a bit of history.
American Indians had lived in what would become the two states for thousands of years. At the time of European arrival, Algonquian and Iroqouian-speaking tribes dominated what would become New York, while the Lenape dominated what would become New Jersey. In 1609, Henry Hudson explored much of what would later be the two states, and soon the Dutch were establishing trading posts, establishing the colony of New Netherland. Soon after, the Swedes settled parts of future New Jersey, establishing the colony of New Sweden, which lasted just 17 years before the Dutch, led by Peter Stuyvesant, conquered it and made it part of New Netherland. But in 1664, the English conquered the Dutch and took over, changing the name to New York and also establishing the colony of New Jersey. In 1673 the Dutch recaptured New York City and renamed it New Orange. One year later the English got it back. Whew.
During the colonial era, both New Jersey and New York attracted immigrants from all over the place, and thus became diverse places. And then, one long border dispute. Between 1701 and 1765, the two colonies led skirmishes and raids against each other in what became known as the New York - New Jersey Line War. The King finally settled it on October 7, 1769. Between 1708 and 1738, New York governors ruled over New Jersey, and this of course made Jersey residents mad.
During the American War of Independence, both colonies saw lots of action, but more than a third of all battles fought in the war took place in New York. After the United States became a country, New York City was the capital until 1790. New Jersey was the third state to ratify the U.S. Constitution, New York the 11th. While both states had banned slavery by the early 1800s, it was a gradual thing, and even as late as the Civil War Jersey had a small slave population.
Canals in both states drove growth and industry.

@@iammrbeat No it should be Tri-State wars.. I'm from Long Island NY but where was Connecticut in all of this? lol Robert Mechalke is right though..you can see NY borders about 5 states, Upstate NY is far different than living in the metropolitan area even though long island is slightly less crazy than living closer to the city (depending on how far away you are from the city) it's still home to many many rich NYC residents who own million dollar yachts and mansions on the ocean... the local long islanders however are far more working class and blue collar than them.. I think you should do a video about the The Tri-State (which includes NY, NJ, and CT) and the differences between them. I learned some things from this video I had no idea south jersey was influenced by Philly that's pretty interesting maybe even South Jersey ppl like different sports teams too compared to Northern..just like upstate NY and downstate. Anyway cool vid.

NJ resident here. NY has a larger than life presence but really much NJ sees NY as a place to "play" or go to work then leave rather than live there. Anything you want to do - theater, concerts, sight see, mountains, exhibits, Baseball and much more, but at the end of the day we're content just coming back to NJ. Also tons of NY'ers and PA neighbors come to NJ for our outlets, beaches, diners and theme parks, Medieval times, Apple/Pumpkin Picking, and to use Newark Airport and more.

I'm from NJ and I'd say this video is pretty accurate. I'd like to add that NJ has more (better) shore towns since we have that barrier island along a large portion of our shore, and NJ was originally divided East vs west instead of north vs south. It makes sense since the Pine Barrens divide the two down here in South Jersey. East Jersey is farther away from Philly so NYC's cultural influence stretches farther down along the shore

I can drive just one hour in each direction, and be in the Appalachia Mountains in the Northwest corner of our state, or be down the shore at all of our beautiful beaches, which are so much better than Long Island's beaches, and no...we don't like the tv show "The Jersey Shore" either, or I can be in the midst of a city like New York or Philadelphia. @@iammrbeat You guys didn't get to show Skylands (North Jersey mountains) and Long Beach Island, Long Branch etc. Some places, and towns around the Watchung mountains and south to Windsor, or even those Branchburg Hillsborough town areas, are pretty nice with the cows, wine fields and farms, horses etc. Also what's unique and wonderful in New Jersey are the winding roads in the smaller mountains (they call them hills, but they're actually just drive-able, habitable mini-mountains and valleys) the ones that look almost impossible to pave roads and build houses, lots of big beautiful houses, and they somehow did it. There's some comparisons to the Atlanta mountain suburbs if you've ever been to there in Georgia. Big houses in the forest towns and hills etc. You can find huge huge houses around these areas, like Somerset, Hunterdon and Morris county. Hunterdon has some of the most beautiful parks. Morristown is also underrated as one of the cozy towns but with that Virginia, New England type colonial feel, mixed with new. Princeton is also underrated and has a nice feel to it, great amenities, parks and shops, and has an educated base of people and thinkers, great for learning and thinking ideas etc. And Jersey also has some of the best Pizza, often just as good, and sometimes different. Long Island also has underrated wine fields and open land. Also, the Hudson River mountain drives on New Jersey is underrated, there's some little sand beaches there you can dip your feet in.

I got tired of walking frankly,NYC is for walkers..kinda like those zombies. Give me a car and a house and a Walmart..Bye walking from my apt to Zabar's..this social distancing makes NYC useless.

Here from South Jersey (go to school at Princeton, live on Long Beach Island, grew up in Shamong), and I can honestly say that South Jersey is one of America's hidden gems (with two exceptions: Atlantic City in the last 2 decades and Camden). We've got a lot of amazing suburban areas, yes, but the beauty of the rural farmlands and the Pine Barrens are incredible, not to mention our amazing beaches. Funny how New Yorkers always pick on Jersey but they still come here to vacation, huh? We're only an hour and a half away from Philly or New York and there's just so much amazing stuff to do and to see here, it's really incredible! Please do not judge New Jersey by the rude New Yorkers who masquerade themselves as North Jerseyers or by Jersey Shore, New Jersey is truly an amazing place!

In addition to the population statistics, the numbers of hospitals and doctors are very important. I can't speak for NYC, but Boston is famous for the numbers of hospitals and doctors in the area. Boston has 4 mega-hospitals, not counting independent hospitals, clinics and labs. Compared to parts of the country with many megachurches and few hospitals we should be better off in a pandemic. The number of wealthy communities around both cities means that the tax base is higher. The rich, given a choice, prefer to live near the advantages of the big cities, and would rather pay taxes than get sick and die.

I was born in Brooklyn (and still have family all over NYC) and moved to New Jersey when I was 5 years old. I can honestly say without a doubt New Jersey is better than New York. Depending on where you live you have access to almost everything and yet you are far enough from everything. If you want to go to any major cities like, NYC, Philadelphia, Boston, D.C, Wilmington, Hartford or Baltimore they are all within a few hours drive; making perfect day trips since each city has it's own culture and vibe. Speaking about culture New Jersey (for it's size) is probably the most culturally diverse state on the east coast (if not the country). It isn't uncommon to go to a plaza and see Italian, Korean, Jamaican, Mexican, Punjab(Indian) restaurants within walking distance of each other. Jersey has a variety of things that the state of New York (as a whole doesn't have). BTW...just a little note incase you ever do a video on New Jersey...yes unofficially there is a "Central New Jersey area" (Middlesex, Monmouth, and Somerset counties). For some strange reason there is a debate about this but trust me "Central New Jersey " does exist and is a weird hybrid of both the North and South.

@@PeruvianPotato I'm surprised and not surprised. Given the situation of Ellis Island, and how (to the best of my knowledge, although I may be wrong) Liberty Island is man-made, if the dispute went to the Supreme Court, New Jersey would have the 1998 decision to back up their claim

Born & raised in NJ. I really enjoyed this video. One minor nit pick: The northern NJ area closest to NYC (Bergen, Hudson Counties) refers to that particular sandwich you showed as a "hero." While "sub" is understood, that's a hero, as it is in much of NYC. Based on this video, I'll definitely be watching some of your others. Well done!

This is a great series of videos! l wonder if you could do comparisons between cities and States that you already have compared, such as Maryland to Delaware, as l have not seen any video about Maryland, or the State of Michigan, for that matter. How about comparing Finland with Sweden? And Jerusalem with Tel-Aviv (in correct Hebrew, Tel-Aviv must be hyphenated)?

I love NJ. You have cheaper houses in nicer, calmer areas. You're also closer to the downtown manhattan than brooklyn or queens. And you're closer to center city philly then if you were to live in west, north, or very south of Philly. So basically Jersey is the place where you get a safer place to live in a bigger house with a bigger yard for less money. And it can be closer to the downtown areas of major cities than suburbs in that city's state. And then you have the shore and then fact that your right in between washington DC and Boston. So you can do quite a bit of traveling in a weekend.
