Jersey Ave is purely a morning commuter station. Many of the trains departing in the morning were stored overnight in the yard that is right next to the station. I used to commute from Jersey Ave in the 90's and the parking pay system was interesting. They had what looked to be a multi-slot mailbox, with each slot corresponding to a parking space. You found the slot for your space and inserted 3 singles into the slot. Finally, in the early morning, we had a catering truck parked next to the train, which was great for grabbing a coffee before you boarded. Another nice feature (especially in the winter) is you could board the train as soon as it came in, and stay out of the weather while you waited for it to depart.

interesting, thanks for the info! was that catering truck NJT-sponsored or just a separate business?
@Andrew-ep4kw4 ай бұрын
@@honajtransit Don't know, but since there was never more than one truck there at a time (and for years, it was the same truck) I imagine the truck got or bought a permit to operate at the station in the morning. Not sure if that means he was sponsored, but it was nice that NJT allowed the truck to be there. Having a hot coffee while you waited for the train to depart was a good thing.

Great video. Fare Free week was a lot of fun going to stations I normally probably wouldn't have gone to
@qijunbredygu94024 ай бұрын
The free week of transit was to compensate for the weeks of hell during the summer when the NEC had a meltdown.
@honajtransit4 ай бұрын
true -- aside from any NEC issues, NJT would be infinitely better if NY and NJ could just stop squabbling for one second
@JoshuaTheTransitProdigy4 ай бұрын
The only reason I don't care for Jersey Avenue is because New Jersey Transit couldn't find the time to have some train depart to New York during the PM rush yet you can have them during the AM rush. It would've been better if they did it for those who work overnights in the city, etc. That way, they don't have to go further out their way. That's just me.

Fascinating! From the map, it appears that Northbound departures have to weave across the NEC at grade, rather than by means of a flyunder - that can't help overall capacity, surely? \m/
@honajtransit4 ай бұрын
yeah, it very much hinders capacity! there is a long-standing plan to build a flyover and a new yard/station nearby, but this hasn’t happened yet (and likely won’t happen until the MOM line is built, which in and of itself will likely take decades)

I use Jersey Ave regularly. During morning and evening rush, it's quite busy and is largely just a weekday station for JrsyAve-NYP/NWK commuters.

That little van takes riding the short bus to a whole new level! 😅 I'm joking! But, that was great information. I've been to the Trenton Train station before like over 20 years ago. It's similar to the one in your video with the big parking lot!

Why was there a "National Airline Railway" being built in the 1870s? Were the big airlines playing the long game, decades before the first flight? *thinky face*
@honajtransit4 ай бұрын
hah, this is not an "airline" but an "air-line" -- i.e. a line drawn in the air, or a straight* line between two cities *or as straight as possible, at least!
@davidfrischknecht82614 ай бұрын
There was another railway with "air line" in the name as well. The Seaboard Air Line Railroad.

3723, 3733, 3727, 3725, 3817, 3165, can all run MUs on weekdays. Not always, but those sets stay on the NEC only so they can.

i did a video on the blue line last year, and i don't currently have any plans to be in boston again, so more boston videos will be on hold for now! that being said, i'm in the midst of applying to college, and quite a few colleges on my list are in the boston area, so i may end up there for 4 whole years!
