As always, I so appreciate your wonderfully produced historic tutorials on our local rail heritage. You are a wonderful "storyteller" in providing the important impact local rails & railroads had on our region & for the people who lived here.And of course, you are "pretty good" with your camera angles, too! Thanks for sharing. This is Peter M; out!

There were 3 subscription cars still in service up until the end of the Lackawanna MUs. One has been repainted inside and out with new carpeting. I often wonder what happened to them. I was fortunate to ride 2434 over he Gladstone Branch in the early n80s with the permission of one of the subscribers.

Nice meeting you today. So the story I got from an NJ Transit employee regarding 4519 was that the unit was involved in an accident about a year ago. Some of the E.L. wrap was scrapped. You can still see some scratches on the left side. While it sat at MMC awaiting cosmetic repairs, mechanics started cannibalizing it to repair other locos. The head of ops had a fit when he found out and ordered 4519 to be put back together. Even the pantograph was removed. It took over a year but 4519 is now back in revenue service. Rumor has it that NJT is planning a new heritage unit in the near future.

EL was one of my favorite railroads. I’m waiting for the Conrail engine.

Thanks for being there and bringing us with you! It looks like a fun event! I'm reminded of the fact NJ Transit used to hold Hoboken festivals in the 1990s and through the early 2000s until costs and especially post-9/11/2001 security concerns put a stop to them. Hopefully the Heritage Festival is a sign of a continuing trend! Who can really put a value on the public relations benefits NJT reaps from these doings? I'm sure they far outweigh the costs!

Love seeing the heritage engines, especially the 4210 in he old Erie livery. Brings back childhood memories of meeting my Aunt and Uncle at the Paterson station in the 50s when they running the old diesels. My uncle worked for the Erie as a clerk and was transferred to Cleveland. They always came to visit for a couple weeks at Christmas. A few years later I used to ride the Lake Cities back and forth to Meadville, PA during college vacations. I graduated in 69, just before they killed that train.

Oddly enough, I sort of like the Arrow IIIs. They ran them on the Montclair Boonton line (only to Bay St.) when I visited over Labor Day weekend. Incidentally, that's why I had to transfer at Newark Broad St. to continue to NY Penn Station. Nice to see an ALP-45 in a special Atlas trains livery, too. Anyway, get those Arrow III rides in while you can, everyone. Oh, and doesn't the Montclair portion of the Montclair Boonton Line feel more like an interurban than a commuter rail line?

My Pop commuted from Montclair Watchung Station to Hoboken 5 days a week via Erie during the 1950s...then the ferry to the City. I took the trip with him a couple of times. Wish I knew what the exact power was at that time, but it was definitely coal and steam at least early on. Tim or others do you know what it would have been?

Question did the Lackawanna charge extra to ride in the OLS CLUB CAR ?
@3985uprr3 ай бұрын
You had to be a member and pay a premium to be in that club car
@ELAlcoRS33 ай бұрын
YES they were subscription cars. You also had to be sponsored by multiple members and voted in. There was a waiting list. They added some kind of air-conditioning to 2454. It was the ONLY EL MU with AC. The car also had its own Porter. It basically was a special car for the Wall Street elite.
@johnplampin72742 ай бұрын
@@ELAlcoRS3not sure but there may still be one or two diesel club cars on the UP)CNW North line in Chicago. But they may not have survived Covid.
