New Jigging Setup Unboxing Penn Fathom 400 LPHS and Ecooda Black Expert HD 1080p

This is the new Penn Fathom low profile reel. I also compared it to a Shimano Tranx 400 and load it with 20lb 500m braid line. Also did a DIY line spooling.

Good comparison. I haven't seen many 400 size low pros in the wild yet. I have one on order. As far as the handle shaft, I know the Penn works with any Abu Garcia handle and many gomexus handles. I think it's the same size as the Shimano, Daiwa, etc.

Most reels have a standard 8x5mm shaft so you can interchange the handle. Just make sure when buy a handle you also include the nut, handle nut plate and screw.

It’s okay for the price. But I would still prefer Powerpro because it’s more reliable. It is smoother though because it has 9strands compare 4 to the Powerpro.

Check out Daiwa Lexa 300 TW or 400 TW… way way better. Lighter, sturdier , smoother… Sold my tranx and phantom

How is the reel so far, is a big difference between 300 and 400 size?

It’s a good reel. The difference is line capacity and wt. if you’re going to be using 20lbs braid go for 300 size.

Penn fathom low profile or Daiwa Lexa TWS? Which is better?

I would go for the Lexa since it already come with a 2 position power handle for jigging. For casting it will cast better because of the T wing level wind. Lexa has been in the market for some years now. I had and old Lexa before which I had issues with the clutch release accidentally engaging. I actually dropped my tackle in the water when I casted and the clutch accidentally engaged. I believe Daiwa already fixed this issue.

Have you tried this reel yet? I have one that I haven't been able to use because of a back injury and I'm dying to just upgrade the handle anyway. I used a micrometer and my 400 handle what is 6x6mm and my 300 handle shaft is 5x8mm. Did you get the same reading?

Not yet. I haven’t checked the shaft. If you say it’s 6x6mm then it’s the square shaft just like the Abu Garcia Toro Beast. Maybe you can upgrade using the handle of Penn’s conventional reels. I’ll check and get back to you.

Ya I'm looking for something that's nice and keeps the red accents. Maybe I'll look into something aftermarket for the abu garcia Toro beast. Let me know what you find out!

If it’s a square shaft, I don’t think there are aftermarket available. My suggestion is check out the power handle for a fathom lever drag. It’s red. You can get it at ereplacementparts.com. It has a square shaft but I’m not sure if it’s 6x6mm. Just make sure you also buy the handle screw, washer and lock screw. May cost you $40. Just return it if it doesn’t fit. I am not a fan of after market power handles because they don’t have parts available.

Ya good point...I see a lot of aftermarket handles are missing the bearings so you have to use your factory ones if possible. Thanks for the info I'll look into it.

The fathom lever drag handle will not fit. Only option now is the handle from Abu Garcia Revo Toro Beast.

I would still recommend the Shimano Tranx. Been using it for 3 season without any problems plus parts are easier to get. Can’t say too much yet for the Penn since it’s a newer model but Penn is known for it’s toughness. I have other older Penn reels that never gave me problems.

The synchronized drag is useless because as soon as you cast it the level wind disengages. And becomes unsyncronized.

That’s correct. My Shimano Tranx 400 has caught a lot of Stripers and Blues. Levelwind does not move when fish is taking drag. So far it held up.

Have you used it yet and how's the handle back play. It's not instant anti reverse got some slip to them.

Haven't used it yet. Maybe yours is defective? I don't have any issues with the anti reverse. It's instant.

Hello sr. I have the idea of match this reel but the lp version to a 14 rod for surf fishing. Actually I use a fathom ii that have the same capacity of mono. My question is if this reel could reach the same distance as mi fahtom ii or something close to it. I cast normally 140yds with mi fathom ii. Thanks for Reading

I believe so maybe better. My experience is baitcasters cast better than round conventional reels because of the lighter spool and less resistance. However, I found my Shimano tranx and Daiwa Lexa has a smoother spin than the Penn spool.

I always go for the Fathom even for the lever drag just because it’s the mid level model. Just a preference but I don’t see that much difference to tell you honestly.

Why do you use a HS ( high speed) for jigging?

More line retrieve per crank especially when speed jigging. It will be harder to crank that’s why I upgrade to power handles.
