Yeah, that's what a choil is usually used for, but some blades have such huge choils that some people place their index finger their when using it. I'm with Ethan; I'd rather not place my finger their. David's addressed it in some previous reviews.

He just fixed what I didn't like about the BK 2. If I'm going to carry that much steel I'd rather have a hawk or a short machete combined with a light thin/sharp knife.

j greystoke I think, if you haven't yet purchased one by now, that you will find it to be a good knife.I have two of the very limited BK-10's that were sold before the reintroduction into the product line. It feels really good in hand, particularly with the G10 scales from The Knife Connection I purchased as soon as they were available.

jdmekcivic Glad you are enjoying your BK-10s. From the many reviews of users(as opposed to just collectors), I gather that the answer to question: "what could be better than one of those BK-10s?" would be: "How about two of them?":). I have a number of axes, machetes/goloks/billhooks for my orchard and woodshed, and for camp/bushcraft/survival. But no Beckers. Definitely going to remedy that. Stay safe jd.

I got my Ka-Bar Becker BK10 from Ethan Becker himself this year at Bladeshow. And it was an honor. But I still use it . And it is a great knife. Razor sharp and hard as a rock. Chops and cuts like a champ. And the size is the perfect medium between chopper slicer and bush knife. Plus works great with my molle pack.

What Becker said about finger choils makes a lot of sense to me, for a survival knife. In a survival situation, who needs to deal with a sliced finger in addition to everything else that's going down?

How things change in time, I went from a 3knife carry to a 2knife carry but added my 2Hawks Trapper Double Bit Hatchet and my Wicked Tough Saw and just this weekend I took my BK-10, Bk-9 with the other tool's and gave my Swamp Rat's a break, we didn't go to far away, but a nice area, but when Ethan was talking about choil, well I guess it's different strokes for different folks, I like a choil, most of my go to knives have choils. A choil to me is like having two knives in one a smaller and bigger knife, I never cut my finger on a choil yet, and it allows me to choke up with it more then without a choil, I just had a Rodent 6 Modified at the Swamp Rat Custom Shop I had my Rodent 6 thinned down and the top gaurd taken off and now it look's like a beefy Ratmandu on steriods, awesome, for a 6" blade I'll take it over my BK-2, BK-10, or my BK-7, it chop, and now slices alot better and it's still a very robust knife, all you have to do is pick it up and you know that's a knife, don't get me wrong, I like my Becker's and I still own almost the whole line of BK'S , and I took two of them with me over this Holiday weekend, but still my go to knives are my Swampies and the choils, have a great rest of a 4th of July.

Great video David! That looks like a pretty awesome knife, and I always prefer a good 1095 Cro Van or O1 carbon steel blade to stainless myself! A little mineral oil or even vegetable or olive oil works great to keep the rust monster away.
@05generic
@05generic 10 жыл бұрын
Think of the subject as two types of choils -finger and sharpening. A sharpening choil is typically smaller. It need not be any larger than to cover the space where the grind transitions to the ricasso. If the transition is curved (like it is on many modern knives for aesthetic purposes) instead of abrupt, then the choil needs to be as wide as the curved area.

i agree with ethan proper maintenance of a knife no rust. i want carry a coated blade for 2 reasons one easier to scrape a ferry rod if need be and to can take a piece of chert and through sparks front the back edge like a fire steel. i have had my knife in the bush for days and days it will get a few spots from moisture even after wiping but when get home a little polish makes it brand new then rem oil before storage i have put patinas on some because i love the look
@theamazingfreak
@theamazingfreak 10 жыл бұрын
When you asked about carbon knife maintenance I thought about Camellia Oil, Japanese call it Tsubaki, this is what the samurai have used to coat their swords and they remain intact for hundreds of years, so it must be good. I have ordered some online but don't have it yet, so no personal experience there. I have some carbon steel straight razors that I regularly shave with and use mineral oil, and have had no rusting in around 27 years so far :)

This knife is my all around favorite. I own a bk 2, bk7, bk9 and this one. I love this design. Its short enough to do more delicate cutting but still long enough to limb most anything. The stubby point would be hard to break but can still stab. The one thing i really dont like is the goofy scabbard. It would have been much better just plain leather like a normal kabar. Dont need all the pockets and velcro and extra loops to carry upside down on you back or some dumb bs.

Hi David, I have the BK-10, it's paired off with my BK9, I wish it was made in a 7" blade lenght with the same tip shape, so instead, I added the BK-16, since I am a 3knife carry guy, I have similar problems with my BK-17, and BK-7, but Ka-Bar makes the Swabbie, which actually make a nice matching set, and very functional, my BK-2 was a hard one too, I went with the BK-16, and the BK-2, and the Ka-Bar Zomstro, excellent Chopper, not exactly a match, but it's odd shape, It can pass, but a great functional set too, actually for a 3knife carry, all the Becker's are tough to match three knives, like my BK-15, my BK-5, and the BK-4, all my set's are very functional, I can light chop and even baton with my BK-5, but with the BK-4, bring it on, actually, I almost like my BK-10 better than the BK-2, in a familiar bushcraft setting, it does slice better than the BK-2, but in a emergency survival situation, the BK-2 is king, now as far as a choil, I think a choil add's a dimension to the knife, I can choke up on it and use it as a shorter knife, or hold it and make a longer blade, or I can angle the knife better so I can hold the angle like a plane, but my three favorite knives in my 3knife carry are my Swamp Rat's, both the Ratmandu, and my Rodent 9, with my Rodent Solution because it's only 3 1/2" and convex grind, in extended longer trips, which I call serious trips, because they are more remote, and usually longer, I carry four knives, and I bring the Rodent 7, I use to think thicker blades batoned better, but my BK-10 and the BK-9, baton wood great, seriously, like I said I just wish Becker made a 7" blade lenght in the same tip shape. But because my BK14, with scale's also add's another dimension to the knife, and I use it like a neck knife, I usually don't count it as part of a set. Over Kill, I don't think so, but a backpack is needed in my systen, I respect the wilderness too much, not to be preoared.

Hi David,did you decide during this video whether the BK10 is worth buying ? I would like a new knife to play with but the BK2 looks like overkill and the problem with nice knives in the UK is that hardly anyone sells them,so it is virtually impossible to try before you buy. Many thanks and happy Christmas, Colin

Pretty much but these days that's more likely to be called a Spanish ricasso or sharpening notch. Although it goes somewhat against the traditional definition a choil is often now regarded as an enlarged sharpening notch, big enough to accommodate the index finger for a choked up grip

I love ethan becker, he knows finger choils are useless and just there for the metrosexualization of survival knife, i also like the way he describes rust and knives and how natural aging of carbon happens, people always want to baby their knives though and make it look like a shiny flashy fashion statement, i always take all coatings off my knives because i find them to be useless and actually take away from the slicing power because of the friction, i instead give them a slight vinegar patina i only put a slight coat of oil if i'm storing them for awhile.

That knife sounds like it would be a great knife and I have the BK-2 knife and love it except for it having a dull blade. The handle is thick on my knife and fits my large hands perfectly, but the sheath is too hard to remove the knife and is poorly designed. The blade on that knife you are showing is looking great and should last the average person a lifetime.

The choils are one of the design flaws that keep me away from these knives. Ditto the ricassos. I’d prefer a blade that goes straight back to the handle like the Mora Companion. The giant choils on Esses are why I’ll never buy one. Wish the BK2 wasn’t so thick and the BK10 wasn’t so thin. Looks like I’m going to have to make my perfect knife.

With the shape of Ethans head and all, I would have to say knifemaking is foremost on his mind. He looks as though he stepped out of the world of fashioning tools and knives from horns,bone and obsidian, to the world of steel and metalurgy. Proof time travel exists now. The great apes of the world have come through the portal.

People will probably hate this comment but I just can't bring myself to purchase this model. I have looked at it for 5 years and I'm looking at again now hence why I'm watching this video. What I take away from this interview is this knife is just a fashion statement and just a fancier, lighter way of presenting the BK2 to customers with some minor changes which are cosmetic. Combine the crap sheath, rubbish handles which need replacing and it is not worth the money. So in Australia atm it is worth around $225 ($146 USD), new handles are worth around $119 ($77USD) and decent sheath will be around $150 ($97) which all adds up to a knife costing $494 ($320USD). Really? Completely not worth it when I look at ESEE, TOPS, Falkniven, Cudeman or Lionsteel which I don't need to modify. The BK range are so over rated sorry to say for the price and I own the BK16, BK3, BK7, BK9, BK2, and the only one worth owning which was ridiculously over priced, is the BK21 Kukri. This for posting this video is has reminded me why I keep away from the BK10!
