Picked up another kayak from Dick's (Trailerblazer 100 Pelican 10ft.) I will show you how I modify it to my liking. So if you like the video maybe it can help get your kayak tricked out to your liking. I know this is a long video but it shows how to make some changes to a kayak. I will also post a part 2 on how to make and install a milk crate box for more storage. So before anyone whines about leaks, I have'nt had any problems with any of the holes that I drilled and put screws in, not to mention I don't take my kayak on rough water anyway. And like I said before to someone why worry about small drops of water it would be the water coming over the sides into the cockpit I would have problems with.

I like the idea of threading your screw holes. I will use that little trick next time I add something to my kayak.

There are situations where that is the proper method of mounting, however (since the bolt was going into a part that was threaded) this was not one of them.

If you cut the rear compartment I would add foam or inflated dry bags front and rear so it doesn't sink. That's what I did with mine, after seeing someone manage to sink one of these... Just a thought. Thanks for the great videos.

Good observation but I have cut the back out of two and a Sundolphin and flipped two of the three. They have foam around the sets to help prevent that, but it takes a lot to sink one.

Just here to give you a thank you. Couldn’t believe the lack of critical thinking in the comments below. None of these mods expose a previously sealed space. I’ve done them to my kayak in a similar fashion. It’s been just fine, and ultimately made the kayak far more useful.

That back hatch, the one that's too tiny for anything useful, was designed that way so that the back section of the kayak acts as a bulkhead to trap air if the boat fills. The theory is that water will fill the front end and the back will become a giant air bubble to hold the boat and your gear afloat while you either reenter and bilge or you tow the yak and gear to shore. After cutting it out, if something happens and the boat fills then the back end will also fill and that boat and all your gear will become a crappie bed.

Your thoughts are valid but the situation can be easily fixed like I have done mine..... install a small car inner tube Your buoyancy issue is gone and you have a nice place to keep your things all in one place instead of them moving around in your yak.

@@kippercat123 That's a great idea. I've seen this hatch removal done on a few other videos and the idea of items sliding around in the back isn't appealing. Nice solution to kill two birds with one stone.

Good video. One suggestion: if you cut the rear access hole. You might be leaving your kayak vulnerable when u take on water. You might want to add foam or floating bags to the very back in the hull out of the way from ur storage compartment. Just in case u flip and take on water. I also use screws after I pre dill the holes. But I use a very strong glue sealant for the threads.

I wouldn't put screws plus I would put marine sealant on before I installed anything. Unless you can bolt it in, I would use rivets or well nuts

The screws self thread themselves plus no sealant needed as this kayak per the manual only intended for lite surf and calm rivers and lakes.

Why would you use sealant on a boat that has a four foot long opening in the middle of the deck? I would agree if it was a S-O-T or had sealed bulkheads.

Drilling a hole on the bottom of the rod holder- that water is going inside of the hull - i hate it when water gets inside ! Also u might want to put 100 marine silicon around and on the drilled holes- u can buy a sealed hatch that will cover that big hole u have on the front

WHY NOT use silicone sealer under rod holders so it creates a water tight barrier . Kayak shops do that. Less water to worry about seeping in .
@PappysKeepers34
@PappysKeepers34 6 жыл бұрын
Rere West I dont do that because the rubber gaskets are enough to keep water out and the holes at the bottom of the holders are just so if any gets in it can run out into the storage area

for safety sake, please keep all cords behind the saw blade. do not cut toward your power cord, or any other cord, or any other unnecessary obstruction that can easily be moved behind and out of the path of a blade. consider yourself very lucky that the electric cord was not cut, resulting in a damaged cord or worse yet, a shocking experience.

Why would you NOT seal every hole you put in your kayak with Silicone? Secondly, WHY are you not using bolt and nuts for anything that is going to hold weight? Those screws are likely to tear right out.
@PappysKeepers34
@PappysKeepers34 6 жыл бұрын
Thomas Riehl for the simple fact if you have enough water coming over the top of the kayak to worry about tiny holes that self tapped themselves, you need to worry about the water that is coming in through the cock pit opening, if I drilled holes in the bottom or at water level I would have sealed them.
