About the gas stations in the Netherlands: It used to be very common to go inside the little shop to pay for the fuel after filling up your car. Some stations still work that way. At stations that don't have a shop anymore and/or are in service 24/7 you will find those self-service pumps.

Yes, it was still common in 2010 to walk in to pay for your gas. And it still is, but less than back then. Lots of filling stations have been converted to be unmanned but those at busier roads especially by highways still have the little shop you go into to pay. I think the little snacks, accessories and random junk people buy there impulsively outweighs the cost of keeping busier gas stations staffed.

The gasstations are either manned or unmanned. It's up to the owner whether they also want to earn extra money by selling snacks, food, magazines, cigarettes etc. In many case the fuel at manned stations is slightly more expensive than unmanned stations, and also the bigger known companies, like Shell, Texaco and BP are more expensive than the smaller ones like Tango, Tinq and Total. In the 80s it was even more common that an employee from the gasstation filled up your car. He or she would ask how much (liters) and you could then mention that. Then you had to walk with that person inside to pay. ATM cards were less common used in the 80s of course. 🙂

Very nice video! Thank you for showing this to us. By the way when gas stations are ‘manned’ it is very common to walk in and pay at the counter. This mostly applies for gas stations off the main highways. ‘unmanned’ gas stations (like Tango) have those debit/credit card boxes. On highways you often find a mixture, where during certain hours you can pay inside, but outside of those hours use the little box.

13 years ago i used a lot of self service as well, it is here since early 2000. i used a lot of self service in the border region on the German side as well at the agrar/landwirtschaft laden. But fuel prices are different now!

it has been very common just like in germany just as it is now, although the credit/debit card system next to the pump is becoming more prevelant

in the Netherlands there has been a move towards un-manned gas stations, but there are still a few normal/old gas stations where you have to go inside to pay

I think it's about 50/50. Especially outside of the big cities it's still very normal to find manned gas stations, mostly with a little shop attached.

Ja, um 2012 herum gab es meiner Meinung nach in den Niederlanden immer mehr kleine unbemannte Tankstellen. Genau wie in Deutschland musste man dies im Shop der Tankstelle bezahlen. Dies trifft vor allem auf Autobahnen zu. Deutschland liegt immer etwas hinter den Niederlanden. Normalerweise probieren wir etwas Neues aus und führen es dann in ganz Europa aus. Ich kann mich erinnern, dass ich bereits 2012 die Möglichkeit hatte, online Bankgeschäfte zu tätigen, und dass ich es einem Freund in Österreich gezeigt habe. Damals funktionierte es noch ganz traditionell hinter dem Schalter einer Bank. jetzt gibt es das nicht mehr.
