I remember when s30v came out. It was highly praised and touted as the best KNIFE steel available. Hearing how people just cast it aside now as some,”eh it’s only s30v but it’s still good,” kind of bs makes me start to question if we really needed anything beyond 440c. I mean, eventually we’ll be saying magnacut and 15v are just ok but still good.
@justified_edc Жыл бұрын
100% agree with you, the only thing that I believe warrants some complaints is when companies use “outdated” steels and charge too much for them. Nothing wrong with using older steels, but then the price should reflect that. Aka: benchmade charging over $200 for s30v and aluminum on the 940 when the price should either be dropped, or the steel upgraded. But with all that said, most people would probably be happy with 440c if the steel name wasn’t stamped on the blade lol
@annihilousterminus5728 Жыл бұрын
I use American-made only, $150-$300 price range only, regular production only, since 2001. 80% of my pocket knives are S30V & D2, including the the Benchmade Skirmish, which was one of the first production knives to use S30V. I also own and have adequate experience with using M4, M390, and CruWear. From the perspective of the user, cutting cardboard, all those steels have the same edge-holding.

440B is not a bad steel at .92% carbon it isn't quite as edge holding as 440C with a good heat treat, but it is a little tougher having 1.10% Molybdenum and .10% vanadium to help make the grain a little finer. Randall Knives used it for decades so you know it is no slouch of a steel. Bohler Steel calls it N685 and specs it out after temper of being able to hold a hardness of Rc57-59.
@bobjohnson1633 Жыл бұрын
It's a good steel. It's a stainless classic. But, it isn't a great steel
@MountainFisher Жыл бұрын
@@bobjohnson1633 No it isn't, holds a decent edge with those chromium carbides. People forget that back in the early 90s ATS-34/154CM and D2 tended to be the preferred custom steels while factory knives were 440C and B for best knives. Then you had Buck pushing the Hell out of 420HC. 440C got a bad rap from poor heat treat just like 14C28N ( & steels like it) often comes in around RC57 and almost never above 60 when the factory spec is RC62! I won't buy a factory knife made out of it or Nitro-V which is the same thing except it has a worthless 0.08% Vanadium to give it the V in Nitro-V. Some knives made out of it are too expensive considering they're supposed to be budget steels. I have a friend who bought an expensive Nitro-V knife and he complained to me it wouldn't hold an edge.. Poor heat treat because it does fine if taken above Rc 60, but that cost too much. Civivi used to take their 14C28N knives above 60-62 and look at them now.
@acid6urns Жыл бұрын
@@MountainFisherwhat are you talking about civivi still does a good heat treat? literally haven’t heard a single complaint
@MountainFisher Жыл бұрын
@@acid6urns Look at their present hardness numbers. They used to be RC60-62 hard, but now I see RC58-60 hard listed and RC62 is 10.3% harder than 60, 20% harder than 58. Factory specs with excellent toughness numbers is to harden 14C28N to 62+ and Civivi used to HT to that, but I'm guessing the higher temps needed for 62 are too expensive. China is going through some financial turmoil at the moment to say the least.
