Why doesn’t SpaceX protect the OLM with the heat shields they make themselves? Why scorch the tower with every launch
@Spectator1959

The near instantaneous thrust from the 33 engines would shatter and blast the tiles right off the tower. They would just become debris. The reentry to earth is much more gradual and at far less pressure.

@NASASpaceflight do you think the ship catch points will have to be perfectly perpendicular to the arms in order for the catch to work or are the rails adjustable to compensate for it? The stabilizers seem to suggest that.

Also, as far as I'm aware, we don't know how the flame trench is going to be constructed yet. If it's entirely above ground (so more of a huge alley-way with walls/berms on each side) then that won't change things but if at the other extreme it is as deep as say the one at Massey's that would give a lot more clearance below the Raptors so for instance if the flame trench is 5m below surface level the OLM could be 5m shorter and still have the same clearance to the top surface of the blast deflector. (Well, not exactly because the current OLM shower head is flat whereas I assume the blast deflector will be curved like at Massey's and also I suspect if a below-ground flame trench does give some extra metres of clearance to the Raptors above it I suspect SpaceX might want to keep some of that as genuine extra clearance between the Raptors and the water-cooled blast deflector. I can imagine a situation though where maybe a 6m deep flame trench might end up allowing SpaceX to al least make the new OLM legs a couple of metres shorter which, as well as the base estimates to be 1.5m taller, could add another bit of effective height to the tower as well.)

Listen....I know SpaceX has alot of extremely Intelligent engineers working for them...But i just sincerely Hope they Really Thought through this next flight attempt. Catching the Starship Booster ...! My main concern is the OLM , Tower Structure and Surroundings... Especially the " Surroundings "...!! How Flammable or Heat Resistant are they...!?? After all , that Boosters' Exhaust will be " Smoking " that area...!!
@Spectator1959
@Spectator1959 Ай бұрын
Since the booster has expended nearly all its fuel by the time it gets back to the tower it is massively lighter and requires only the center 3 engines to be running. I don’t remember specifically, but I think they don’t even have to be running at full thrust. Still hot but much less flamey than departure.

If you do the math, even with 100% perfect combustion in the explosion, it's not possible for the booster to even dent the OLM. The booster will have maybe 15-20% combustion during a RUD.

that explosives container doesn't look to, er, robust if there was an explosion.
@David-yo5ws
@David-yo5ws Ай бұрын
A proper explosive container would be designed with thin steel on the roof and very thick steel on the sides and floor, in order to direct an 'event' upwards. That looks like your regular , average, every day container.

Construction speed must be accelerated! I hope they install the entire tower and robotic arm within 7 days. At least 200 hangars/launchers and more fuel manufacturing facilities need to be built within 2 years, as well as large-scale automation and unmanned operations, otherwise Musk's launch goals will be difficult to achieve.

They have a whole bunch of v1 heatshields tiles leftover and should use them to cover the BDQ cover and other top-side steel areas of the orbital launch mount

The tps tiles are great for high heat re-entry but they are brittle, not good for force from the engines.
