I just found out that any new document I create with the preset "web" (any of them - web large, web medium, etc) will have white background, no matter what I do - even if I change the "Background Contents" to "transparent". I tried everything you did in this tutorial, but nothing would change that. Only way out is creating a new document that is not a "web" preset.

THANK YOU SO MUCH. I finally updated after years, and I didn't know they had added artboards. I thought I was losing my mind. I had exported it as a png, and the background was white. I'm not even sure what the point of adding artboards to photoshop is? Unless maybe the goal is to someday combine them both into one program or something.

Hello, I'm having some trouble with this version of Photoshop, my artboards even if I create in transparent mode they just appear as white on the screen but transparent on the layer thumbnail, and when I try to export something i create in a transparent layer above, in the area of pixels my object occupies comes with some annoying white background and the rest of artboard appears transparent as everything should be. Thank you. My issue was the background transparency colors in the preference section were both set to white for some reason. I just had to change the one of the transparency squares to grey.

Thanks for the video. I'm still having issues. When I select and mask a subject and simply try to copy and paste it to a new layer, it looks like it's gonna be a transparency in the select and mask preview, but when I go to paste it into a new layer, it shows up with a white background anyway, even though the layer started out as checkerboard transparent and so was the selection in my select and mask. How do I remedy this?

@Pixel & Bracket Thank you for this! I'm brand new to PS. I'm wanting to print out my sketches to screen print onto fabric. PROBLEM is, I only need the black parts of my sketch onto the print out. Any smudge marks or shadows in the background appear when I print it out. Hoping this technique will help me! Lol did I mention I'm new and am NOT tech savvy? Thanks a bunch.

You’ll need to isolate your sketch lines better for that. Check the first link in my description under the “watch next” section, and use the masking techniques!

I got some free png overlays but they are only 800x533 (433 kb). The ones I bought are 5184x3456 (2,11 mb). Can I use the free ones, when they are so much smaller? Sorry if the question is stupid. It looks fine on my screen in edit, but not sure it would work for prints?

Usually what I do is go to that background layer, select-all (CMD+A) and hit delete. It’s just pixels on the bottom-most layer

THANK YOU!!!!! I just wasted over an hour of productivity trying to figure wtf I couldn't get just a simple transparent background layer which USED TO BE so fricken simple and easy. Nobody else mentioned the Artboard > Window > Properties, I can't thank you enough. I was literally ready to lose my marbles. such a completely asinine extra how many steps to do something that used to be as completely simple as CMD+J. Whose ever idea this was should be fired. I want my hour back.

im looking for someone to show me how to save an image without the checkerboard background...i need just the image..when i save it all i need to do with it after is simply drag and drop it onto a new document without having to remove ANYTHING. Even if i save it as a PNG it still saves with the checkerboard pattern behind it..not what i want.

it's probable your image includes the checkerboard background already saved within the file. because i don't even believe it's possible to save out the transparent checkerboard from photoshop. if it's transparent underneath and you save as png it will not be included with the image. if you're still having trouble email me

@@pixelandbracket you know when you use the object select tool and get the object you want off the background its on...then you can copy and paste it onto another layer without the background behind it..thats what i want..basically what i want to do is create a reusable watermark that i can drag and drop onto an image without having any editing to do to it.

Hi! I'm trying to create a logo and have placed a white recntangle through the logo to create a 'empty space' however when i am saving it transparent i can see the white object still.. is there a way i can hide that white rectangle yet keep that empty space?

Use the shape builder tool to delete out that shape, leaving a cutout in your logo. Shoot me an email if you’re having trouble
