I’ve been using a one to one ratio of Sta-Flo starch and water and soak my fabric in it, then hang it to dry. I am really impressed how well it works to calm down the fraying for those tiny pieces.

I can see how that would help! I have never been a starcher but if I need to cut a ton of little squares I may try it!

I watch Brenda, how long has the fabric existed, to get weak? That happens if improperly stored or ancient... in a box is neither. Some cotton is very thin to start with, you can put that where it won't be needing strength. I have seen ladies who keep a tub of light and darks near the machine, so they have them handy. They do pairs during sewing sessions, then after finishing the bit for today, they turn the pairs into four patches and if wanting a bigger quilt, will sew 4 together for a bigger block to put aside, when they have enough blocks, lay them out, for what is wanted. Mug rug, book mark, glasses/ pencil/ epp/ tool case, make-up pouch, bowl cosy, placemats, coasters, bags, cushion covers, doll quilt, baby quilt, each takes a few for a quick present or what is needed. You can put your extra block on a fabric backing and sew it as a pocket, onto a plain bag to store the quilt in or use it in a cushion cover to use with it? Do you remember the Quillo? For hst's etc. I use painter's making tape, a ruler and a pen. Put three lines 1/4" apart, you can use different colours for the two lines away from the centre. Line the tape up with your needle at the centre line, use a ruler if needed to get the tape straight. Line up the fabric corner at needle, and the opposite corner at centre line, sew straight down centre with no line drawn on fabric, keep tip on the line as you sew, use either of the 1/4" lines, to sew 1/4 away from centre, for 2 at a time. Sorry This works for me, the plastic thing Lori Holt designed and uses would annoy me. You can buy seam guide tape, ready with lines on it. Find what works for you. You probably know about off-cuts from snowball corners and sewing 1/2" out from seam lines before cutting them off, for bonus hsts, or sewing the straight side instead, putting 4 triangles together, for bonus hourglass units. You can use a full eg. 3" sq instead of 2,7/8", for 2 hst's and trim around, down just a whisker, to size, to remove your random frayed threads. All the best.

Thanks for sopping by and giving me so many ideas. I love the painters tape idea! I do remember quillos!! I love that the little 4 patches are so versatile and you can make tons of projects with them as leader and enders. I really have loads of stash to bust and this will be a great way to use up scraps. I think bags and placemats are something to make too! I am pretty excited

Love the orange and blue borders for your star quilt! Diane is such a master scrapper. Taking one of her classes is on my list. You are such a good teacher too. I appreciated that you showed your block done “wrong” then offered the solution. That’s exactly how I learn best!

Thank you!! That's why I love spending time in the sewing room. Even if it doesn't turn out I learn from it and try again! I loved the scrap class I took from Diane!!

I cut most of my scrap using Bonnie Hunter's scrap management size suggestions. I don't get frayed edges because I carefully stack the pieces by color in drawers sorted by size. The color stacks are packed rather tightly in the drawers so that the pieces to slide around much. Works for me.

I think having them packed in and not jostled around must help. Bonnie swears by it! Do you feel it take up loads of time?

@@MyCreativeCorner3 Initially, it did take a fair amount of time. Now I just add to the cut stash when I am cleaning up scraps from projects, so not too time consuming.

I dont like the fraying either. I have tried cutting small pieces and storing in clear ziploc bags. That has helped somewhat. I want to try the leader ender concept as well. Thanks for sharimg.

My friend used the clear zip lock bags and she felt it helped too. I need to cut ahead a little for this quilt and I will get the freezer bags out!

I need to try another leader and ender project. Last time I started one it only lasted about a week and then I had to stop and finish it lol. Lori Holt is great, love her! We're at the end of her sew along from her Scrappiness is Happiness book. Have you seen it advertised? If not Fat Quarter Shop has all the info. You can start anytime since you have the book.

I have been following the qal with lori and decided to just work my way thru the book making quilts. I have never tried a leader ender so it will be interesting to see if I get confused lol

I just recently started using leaders and enders ., although I've been savings scraps that I have pre-cut for a while and I've never noticed that the edges fray.

That's encouraging news. I am going to have to cut the scraps ahead a little. It's an exciting thing to try something new!!
