It's amazing the mental gymnastics one can do rather than admit a screwup and make things right. The negative publicity costs would have easily covered replacing the yacht with a proper one when so many problems were initially discovered. Both Leopard and R&C may never recover from their arrogance, lack of quality control, extreme poor customer service and care for their customers' well being. Suppose these 3 had patched it up and sailed across the world, odds are it would be resting on the bottom and they'd hopefully been rescued at sea but maybe not. How many similar yachts are floating ... for now? Should I ever get the money for such a yacht, Leopard won't be on my list of potential brands.
@turipz6 ай бұрын
That's where we're all wrong on this - Leopard doesn't make theirs profits from selling you or me our dream boat at a rate of 10-20 a year, but rather from selling hundreds of cheap shit buckets to be used for charter for 5 years and then discarded by the charter companies at 30 cents on the dollar. And it seems obvious from what we see on all too many youtube channels of Leopard/R&C victims like this one, is that L/R&C are showing just that - they don't give a shit about the private owner. I'll bet you that these videos did not result in one single less L/R&C shit-boat being ordered by The Moorings and the other charter companies. That's why the assholes at L/R&C don't care. The only way to address this is not by causing L/R&C to not make private boat sale profit, as it is a drop in their shit-bucket - it's by making them LOSE their profits by having their victims sue the shit out of them. Especially if several owners (victims) get together and sue.

While I’m no fan of our legal system nor our litigious culture, as Americans, we are accustomed to a degree of legal recourse that apparently is not readily available elsewhere and made even more difficult across international borders. Not just the poor quality but the extreme poor customer service. Years fighting to get a "NEW" yacht seaworthy. Leopard had a good reputation. Had. Their customer service's motto seems to be delay, blame each other, delay, do as little as possible, delay, repeat as necessary until customers give up. I have heard different years given for when the quality went south or when customer service became nonexistant. Maybe Covid, maybe during the boom over the last few years, maybe ... If I were considering a used one, I'd find the best surveyors I could. I wouldn't consider a newer one. All boats have some problems, but, without customer service, one needs deep pockets like plan on spending 50% of value on repairs. Could be more. Or you could get lucky. This is not uncommon on resin vacuum infused boats. I've been saying for years , since this technique has become common place. I am a boutbuider with over 45 years experience. There is no way of knowing whether the resin has travelled through and saturated the underside of a laminate. I have worked at factories where they have used this practice. I have tried to point out to management the dangers of this method. There are literally thousands of boats out on the oceans like this. I have built yachts using vacuum bagging but we always wet bagged. That is setting the whole process up where you have a team of expert laminator who rapidly wet out all the glass before pulling on the bag. Every one of these resin infused vacuum bagged boats is suspect in my opinion.
@LoanwordEggcorn6 ай бұрын
With vacuum infusion you can see the resin wetting out the fiber under the peel ply or release film layer. Lots of boats are successfully made this way IF DONE PROPERLY.
@geppeto7916 ай бұрын
If the boat is foam cored you cannot see if the outside skin is fully wet out. I am also a boatbuikder of 45yrs experience and a proponent of resin infusion. Done properly it gives a much better laminate than wet lam. Normally on production boats at least the first few boats are done with clear gel coat to check the laminate is fully infused. Then as long as the same procedure is used with a perfect vacuum there will not be any problems. However you have to be disciplined to make sure you have that vacuum and not say that should be close enough after an hour or 2 of trying to achieve it. Which is what I suspect has happened here.
@LoanwordEggcorn6 ай бұрын
@@geppeto791 Agree. Bottom line is lack of care/quality process. Some French boats have had similar problems. Can't remember the brand.
@LoanwordEggcorn6 ай бұрын

@ApprenticeGM6 ай бұрын
I think you mean "calibrated" not "collaborated" in your comment (probably an undetected auto-correct mistake). I am curious though, doesn't dry glass just mean not enough resin, as opposed to the resin not mixed correctly?
@MK-cc8ih6 ай бұрын
@@ApprenticeGM thanks for the correction. Your assessment can also be correct. It seems like the application was not applied thoroughly and evenly throughout the mesh and you have a possible air pocket. I also know that if you do not follow the correct procedure when mixing the resin, hardener and fuller, your application will look dry but remain sticky.
@travelsketch6 ай бұрын
The resin drum can run dry, the bag can have a hole in it or a hose can leak etc. This hulls section was resin infused. What you're talking about has nothing to do with the construction of this section of the hull.
@ApprenticeGM6 ай бұрын
@@travelsketch Hi guys, not sure what you mean. If a section is dry, especially an outside pocket, doesn't that just mean not enough resin was applied to that area? Or do you mean, based on what MK-cc8ih wrote, that if resin not mixed correctly (eg too much hardener) the resin near the surface starts hardening before resin can penetrate to the lower glass layers? Perhaps that explains the large areas all over the boat suffering dry glass. Sure do appreciate your detailed videos showing issues and repairs, my heart goes out to you guys, hope you can get sailing soon!
@LoanwordEggcorn6 ай бұрын
@@ApprenticeGM There are multiple ways a vacuum infusion can go wrong. If the resin isn't made/mixed properly it's possible it could work poorly. More likely the infusion process itself wasn't done correctly and the resin simply didn't reach all areas.

@LoanwordEggcorn6 ай бұрын
@@travelsketch There are a couple different ways to do a hybrid. One is a serial hybrid where the Diesel has no connection to the prop and only acts as an electrical generator and only the electric motor moves the boat. The other way is a parallel hybrid where either the Diesel and/or the electric motor can turn the prop directly. Most sailboat hybrids are the latter. A Prius is a parallel hybrid as are almost all road car hybrids because a parallel hybrid is usually more efficient.

I also have watched most of your vids. Sorry you've had such a tough trot. You mentioned the poor build quality of FP ,one of which I owned for six years, full time live aboard, with none of the issues you are dealing with. Where is your yacht broker during all these problems. Keep up the fight.

Wow shocking video, no way you should sell this boat it has all of your upgrades. inspections, and corrections. Invoice payments were a disaster on mine as the factory was avoiding payimg the technitions for warrantee work for a procedure the factory engineers provided. They were so late to trades they were threatening me to collect for payments. My next boat I'm going to live at the factory until its complete inspecting every day. Once you sign the acceptance contract its over as things turn ugly from there.

@@travelsketch What percentage of your hull has dry fiberglass and could you do a diagram of every location that you have found? Also, I'm sure that you missed sections. How will you be sure that you have covered all of the areas and does this diminish the value of your boat when you go to sell it? Now that you've had this experience, how many other boats have the same issues from the same manufacture? One of the things that I see happening is that we had a serge of people purchasing everything including boats which drove the market on many products way up in price. Now that things are slowing down, I'm sure that Leopard wanted to complete those orders as fast as possible so that the other orders wouldn't get canceled when the economy started to crash like it is right now. I'm sure that this had something to do with the quality of labor. They probably said just get it done and we will deal with it latter which that is now destroying there name. It also seems like all of these boat manufactures are being bought up by other companies which always has an issue on quality every time that happens. As a result of your issues as well as what I've seen on other production catamarans that have been documented on KZbin, I will not be purchasing a fiberglass catamaran. I will be getting a Cyber 48. You should sue Leopard!

What gets me is....with all of the reviews of Leopard and Lagoon, why are people even buying these things these days? Yes, they show up as the #1 and #3 most popular brands but that can be partially explained by "rental fleet buyers". Just....say.....NO!
