Lexus takes a refreshingly old-school approach with its 5.0-litre V8 GS F but can it out muscle the BMW M5 and Audi RS6? Steve Sutcliffe gets behind the wheel to find out.
The GS F might be an old fashioned kind of sports saloon in some respects, but where it counts - on the road - it delivers a major hit of driver appeal. That's despite the fact that it isn't at the cutting edge either technologically or dynamically. For the 100 people per year that Lexus GB hopes will buy one, the GS F’s big-hearted personality will matter far more than its mildly off the pace 0-60mph time. For most, it will be way more than quick enough, and it has a beautiful interior plus a genuinely comfortable ride quality as well.

5 years ago people say Lexus cars look boring, now they try to go with a more aggressive approach in styling and everyone loses their minds. Personally I like it because in the right color it stands out in a crowd of subtle BMWs, mercs, and Audi's

Honestly hats off to Lexus. All the Germans are using more and more technology in their cars making them less pure. Lexus has a bad ass straight up approach. Simple 5.0 V8 sounds good and is reliable and then good solid sporty design. Keeping it simple is sometimes the best. In this world of every downsizing and forced induction engines. Thank you Lexus from an auto enthusiast

+Slimecrazy234 You are an idiot. The f10 m5 is seen as a revival from the e60 era and a harkening back style-wise and engine wise with its v8 to the e39 the best m5 ever made. It is already a classic and is still in production. Even Hagerty says its a future classic. Google f10 m5 is a future classic and see how many hits you get stating as such. I think your prediction is backwards. First things first this is a Lexus. Dont see this being desirable or a classic at all. people will forget about this car by year end. Just another utilitarian affordable luxury sedan Lexus, A Boring grandpa brand that not even the Glorious LFA could change the image of .

People need to stop comparing this car to M5, E63 and RS6. All of these are more expensive with almost 100 more hp and they still don't come as well equipped as standard as the GSF. The actual competetor is the S6, but when if you equip it with the same shit as the GSF comes with as standard, it becomes base M5 money, and that's just mental. So, comparing the GSF to the S6, it has more power, weights almost 200kg less and is a bit of a bargain when you look at equipment.

oooor you can look right at Cadillac and see the cts-v is cheaper and has almost 200 more hp. hmmmm tough choice considering the Lexus looks like a catfish with its face ripped off
@camryt
@camryt 9 жыл бұрын
Braden McHenry Invalid in Europe, as the CTSV is not sold here. I honestly can't understand why the CTSV is so cheap, but I guess it might not be as well build or build using cheaper components. Or just other cars are more expensive because of taxes put on foreign vehicles. Dunno. But still, the CTSV is mighty impressive. The looks is personal preference, I really like the GSF and find the CTSV boring as hell. Same thing for the S6. The GSF's grille looks ok in Europe because of frontal numberplates, I'd see why Americans find it too big. But then again, Audi has even bigger grilles these days.
@stoneeh

+AF A Almost nobody uses those cars on track. They are high performance LUXURY sedan/coupe. Regarding the overheating issue; The engine in CTS-V is the same as the one in Z06, which overheats just after a couple of laps and goes into limp mode. GM and the owners have big problems with that engine.

Great resale? Seriously? Resale value will suck. 1. The market for these cars is small. 2. The market for a Lexus is even smaller 3. You have to account for heavy use when buying a car like this used 4. Parts and maintainence will be quite expensive 5. A Lexus is not a classic To find a buyer you will have to give a massive discount. Especially in europe.

+Sirion I am referring to the 100 or so customers across Europe who would be interested... If you re-watch the video Steve said this car will sell in small numbers. It's for those ppl that just don't want to buy a German car and constantly have to get it fixed as German cars are known for their issues. I think it's fantastic. As for resale maybe not in Europe but here in the U.S. Lexus have incredible resale value. I would love to take this over it equivalent German rival. It's preference that I don't have to justify, because they are just great daily drivers.

Thank you for a rather unbiased review... Most reviewers just bash the Japanese and blindly worship the Germans! As a Lexus owner (LS 430 V8 and IS 350), there is just something magical about a Lexus - it is almost an optimum of sportiness, luxury and comfort... It is a shame V8s are slowly going extinct, but I hope this car finds its way in the market!

Awesome car. Great review ! The GSF seems to be geared towards being a drivers car more then a brute force like the over powered others in the class. I like it there's nothing like it anymore. Gotta respect Lexus for making such a sedan when they didnt have to.. Lexus is the performance luxury brand of japan. Looks great in that red pant finish. Also those seats looks awesome. Sadly this is the last run of that NA motor.

Damn, this lexus reminds me of the E39 BMW M5, N/A, engine, no silly turbos, etc. The sound is extraordinary from that V8 much like the E39, and best part is, you can have it with a manual gearbox. N/A V8 + Manual Gearbox = Heaven I would choose GS-F over an F10 M5 or the RS6, without a doubt.

I love the m5, i really do, but honestly, ( strangely ), I would take that Lexus, because sure, 100hp down from the m5, but lexus i think has put more effort in terms of engineering, BMW needs a double clutch gearbox on the m5 to have crisp gear changes, but the gs-f doesn't ! And the sound of that good old 5.0 liter v8, just mind boggling. And at lease lexus has the balls to do something different, that only a few amount of people will understand ... The style of the gs-f is just superb ( personnal taste ). The m5 could take some good lessons from this car! I didn't talk about the RS-6, cause yeah it's damn bloody quick, but fuck it it's only good for making you smile in a straight line, and it's handling and grip is highly sharp and efficient, but it's fucking Boring otherwise ! , it's just another fast german car near much perfect in terms of performance and grip, but still boring afterall. Well donne Lexus and thank you +Auto express to have given some chance to Lexus, and to proove to people that ze German's have still got some work to do !

Hey mate, pretty surprising to hear htat an m5 sounds better than this, even though it's more the m5 that has been synthesized, and that it's got a turbo to make it even quieter, but hey that's my opinion.. this engine is way more interesting than the m5. Kind regards

I would rather have a naturally aspirated engine as they sound a bit better than a turbo engine. Yes, a turbo engine like in the BMW M5 is faster, but has some artificial sounds, which I'm not a big fan on. Also pointed out is the weight. It sounds heavy compared to the M5, so acceleration time will be slower and will take longer to reach 155mph. But don't tell me that in the UK you are going to be driving at 155mph everyday. nevertheless, the Lexus should fit in nicely

Flawed. transparent basis for this "story". It's neither old school (because of no turbo?!), nor short on muscle. Yes, the M5 and RS6 are quicker, but most humans simply can't use all that power. Does - or *can* - anyone use all of that on the street? Frankly, most people who can afford these cars (and those who can't) don't have anywhere near the abilities to exploit all the available performance, let alone have the place to do it.You can really get in trouble with a lot less HP than even this poor, hamstrung rig. Enough of the "old-fashioned" talk. Given all that, Suttcliffe seems to only reluctantly come to the right conclusion: Lexus built a performance sedan for real people (if they can get past the grill!). Having the opportunity to drive one of these every day would be a gift. Note: el al is for people; etc. is for things.

The Lexus doesn't really compete with Merc or BMW I don't think. People who are going to look at the Lexus know exactly what they want no matter what. The cost to buy and own across the board are cheaper on the Lexus. The Merc is an occasion car. They're totally different cars. The only thing the three have in common is that they're all very well made and reliable. That's it.

Hell of an engine, almost 100 hp/litre is quite impressive for a cross plane. Still not a fan of Lexus' design language though.

I really like Lexus F cars but when I think about Lexus immediatly comes to my mind hybrid technology, efficiency.. and I don't understand why they don't apply all that knowledge in their sports cars. It is a bit of a contradiction that they don't follow their own philosophy in this niche. I am pretty sure that they would be able to create amazing hi-tech sports cars and sell much more cars!

If I wanted to go fast and get a lease, I'd take the M5 or the RS6. If I wanted nice car for the long term, I'd take the Lexus and modify it after the warranty was up.

Maybe it might be a good idea to get someone to review cars who can go around a simple bend on a public road without crossing the centre line. I'm guessing that this car has Lane Assist and I'm also betting he's turned it off because it's annoys him. It was invented for people like him.

I would say more likely,,,,,Japanese reliable Maserati Quattroporte! and cheaper! Cos the sound joy car!I don't feel from this car like M5 or E63 issue beast car,,,,. It's more laxually and powerful enough to enjoy like Maseratti!Or,,,,,good Competition to previouse M5 with V10( similer power and Torque) plus sound of the car!I know it's an old fashion! But I would say Toyota/Yamaha did good job to make this engine and exhaust system with bringing not too bad MPG for 2016 standard,,,. Since LFA,,,,Yamaha Music department helps for creating exhaust system who also love cars,,,. And this GSF once had an idea to put V10 engine,,,,so that even V8 on high rev,,,it sounds slightly similer to LFA sound as well.

For the same price, You can get the new CTS-V. Roomier, More comfortable, More room, Easier to maintain, Sounds better, More power and torque, Funner to drive, And lets be honest better to look at inside and out. The Lexus has it beat in Mpg and Reliability, As which i does 99% of the time to any car. Other then one that simply liked the car better i cant see whay they would take this over that, Theres also the ATS-V which is honestly more of a rival given power stats, The M5 is a bit more expensive, Same with a Panamera GTS, Theres the S6 to consider too, The Maser Ghibli SQ4 and Chevy SS you could also throw in there if you wanted too.
