When he got a call from pakistan pm threatening him and telling him that he had agents in india our then stupid pm told them that we also have spies and other secret agency officials in pakistan . Due to this our mission to stop pakistan from getting nuclear weapons failed and pakistani government hunt down our secret officers. I agree with Tellis on the need for fast tracking the arihant SSN program with US/French help. We have been hearing about possible help from Russia or France for about five years now, two submarines have already been built with indigenous tech so any serious changes will only be possible with the next generation SSNs. On aircraft carriers i disagree with him and think that we should look at disrupting the current large US carrier model by incorporating both air and sea drones and thinking of new ways to configure the battle groups differently.

We need that drive and a proper system that recruits people to advance our research and development in Nuclear sector.

I think this US/French/Indian nuclear technology sharing deal is far in the future. Until AUKUS, the U.S. had only shared it's nuclear propulsion technology with Britain, and that was because Britain was part of the U.S. Manhattan Project atomic bomb program (Britain had it's own "Tube Alloys" atomic program until the U.S. entry into WW2, and then merged their program with the Manhattan Project, to both speed development of the bomb and because only the U.S. had the land, electric power and distance from Nazi bombers to make building the necessary nuclear industrial facilities feasible.) and because Britain shared so many British/imperial bases and non-nuclear technologies with the U.S. Then Australia got this technology because it had been a trusted U.S. mutual defense ally since WW2, to the point that Australia actually sent thousands of troops to fight in Vietnam. As for the French, their nuclear propulsion technology is behind the U.S./British technology, and so far they have not shared/sold it with anybody outside of France, though they did strongly hint that they would be willing to sell it to Australia after AUKUS was announced. Maybe India can make this happen, but I think it would require an outright alliance with the U.S., France, or both, and that it would require Indian purchase of reactors from the U.S. or France, with no technology sharing/licensing with India's nuclear industry (neither the U.S., France or UK wants to create a nuclear propulsion competitor in India). That is what is going on with AUKUS. Australia will be buying the entire propulsion system from the U.S. and/or UK. Right now, because Australia has no history or skill in building nuclear subs, it is doubtful that Australia will even be assembling the AUKUS subs from imported U.S./British components in Australia, while historically they built their subs (all diesel/electric) in Australia. Perhaps a better nuclear deterrent strategy for India, one that would better fit with India's historical desire for both self-sufficiency and non-alignment, would be to build more, larger nuclear weapons and to look at vehicle-launched mobile nuclear missiles that are hard to target. You might even be able to get the Russians or U.S. to help you with the vehicle launch technology. Russia uses this now, and during the late Cold War, the U.S. had mobile launchers for missiles that would be the size/range needed by India for deterrence of China/Pakistan.

Absolutely brilliant Mr Gupta. Listening to all of this I somehow feel that aircraft carriers are a liability. I am no expert but instead of acquiring or commissioning another aircraft carrier, India should hedge all it's bets on acquiring as many nuclear submarines as it can in the next 10 years. And that is possible only if it increases it's defence spending several fold and concentrates more on indigenization. Now that in turn is related to India expanding it's economic clout by growing double digit every year for next 5 years, at least. Tall order I say but not impossible.

ACG have offensive-defensive capabilities and are more suited for energy weapons. Also give scope for power projection and deterrence. Submarines are purely offensive and stealth and have zero defences, also unsuited for power projection and beam-energy weapons. ACGs are here to stay. I think you're misinformed about what Mr. Gupta claims to be a debate about Aircraft carriers vs submarines. In the West, there are no such debates. They stick to their doctrines. The US, France, UK all have very advanced submarine fleets. (Don't simply go by the numbers.). In almost all wars, Western equipment has outperformed Soviet equipment. The Soviets went by the doctrine of quantity has a quality of its own and worked within their resources. We must note, that fighting and planning for future warfare is best left to people who have had actual experience rather than such armchair "researchers and analysts". Remember, these same experts made dire predictions for Ukraine in the current war at the beginning. Indeed, if Pakistan's nuclear weapons were such a deterrence, India probably wouldn't have involved the Air Force and the Navy in Kargil. Uri retalliation, Balakot would probably not have happened. I think there are better minds than you and I, Mr. Gupta and the 'analyst' he's quoted to judge how effective India's nuclear weapons programme is and whether India has thermonuclear devices or not. Journalists and analysts are more incorrect in their predictions and to solely listen to what they say would be extremely foolish.

nuclear deterrence is a bogus concept. nuclear weapons can neither deter conventional war nor nuclear war. annihilation is the only useful option when nuclear weapons are present in a situation of war. india needs 20,000 nuclear warheads of 1 kiloton to 50 megaton capacity in an approximately random or gaussian distribution, in order to be able to end the physical existence of its two enemies. it needs about 100 warheads to be predelivered, that is kept deep inside enemy territory during peacetime, to be exploded instantly in war without needing delivery. its enemies too have similar needs, and have been working on it for over 50 years.

1. In plain words, Ashley is telling us that we do have some nuclear weapons, defense technologies and equipment but they are all third rate and useless against not only China but also even against Pakistan. On the other hand, China and Pakistan have top class weapons, technologies and capabilities. So USA must come forward to help India to deal with and take on China. The second part of his analysis is of course welcome to India, however suspect be his initial premise!! 2. What Ashely is doing, like Ro Khanna, is a general move in the US policy to help India to take on China or to become a front line state along with Japan and Australia. Again, this is welcome, as long as India builds up its capacity and USA does not mess up with India's strategic autonomy (read as its dealing with Russia). 3. All of this, of course will be mean nothing if the Chinese decide to be wise and settle the border issue with India!! Who knows Xi's successor could be a wise man! 4. If China is to emerge as the Power No 1 in the world, then of course, India will have to fall in line but before that, India will break up Pakistan in to 4 pieces so that it does not have to deal with Pakistan as the Chinese dog! 5. As an aside, on Shekhar's program, Dr. Anil Kakodar gave a solemn assurance to Indians that 1998 nuclear test were a 100% success. It is amusing that he forgets to mention this. 6. Finally, we should welcome Ashley to do his bit for the Indo US relations, though we may be skeptical of his reasoning. And while buy and read his book, we hope that policy makers in USA buy, read and follow it too!!

Including these media people, the general public (collectively all of us) don't know much about India's real capabilities, even the frontline armed forces personnel themselves don't know. We are surrounded by many hostile countries and added to that satellite snooping, data breaches, espionage, ground spies, etc., etc... Therefore Govt is very careful not to give any impression of the real work that's happening. Despite all the surveillance, etc. none couldn't suspect a new small satellite launch vehicle (SSLV), till ISRO announced. The maiden developmental vehicle was launched a few days back. Similarly, in the past no one could guess Pokran test, our surgical strikes, etc. We are masters in keeping secrets. Now the speciality of SSLV is such that it can be produced and launched in 72 hours (with liquid fuel, etc.) as per ISRO. Now, how long it would take to build a solid propellent based missile?. We have achieved nuclear triad sometime back and people don't know. All we need now is mass production capabilities of attack drones and short range portable hand missile launchers.
