That is amazing how much weight they trimmed off of it and still maintain the parts interchangeability with the 240. Now that’s sexy!

Even though the sig mg-338 is 21lbs bare kicking it up to .338 seems like a good deal. That is considering price isn’t an issue. Biggest thing with the 240b is how battle tested it is, mk48 being used more with special forces than general infantrymen hindering it a little without the grunt knowledge. Interesting to see all these new contenders for US and NATO forces. Keep up the good work Karl 🤙🏼

Honestly this is the way forward. We can field some of the experimental crazy stuff in new innovative calibers/control systems of course because that's how you find out what to do next but really in terms of what we can do *right now* the key is lightening what we have. Lots of tech for making weapons weigh less is coming in from multi material designs to even topological optimization (look into that it's really cool, imagine putting in all the stress points the gun needs to be strong on a computer and having it figure out exactly which parts of the gun needs to be beefier or can be smaller without detriment using what basically amounts to evolution) using additive manufacturing. The point I would really like to make is that this process could have some implications for weapon systems we tend not to think about much. Just how light could we make a fight lite MCR design for example? I'm gonna go ahead and say a whole hell of a lot based on what I've seen of it and it already weighs just 10 pounds... Not a huge stretch to really drop that low. If the weight of a practical 5.56 dual feed weapon gets low enough does it become practical to have more of those in each unit? It seems like if it were light enough it could be a stupid big increase to base of fire especially in the first 60 seconds of a fight because you could theoretically run around with a belt in it on a nutsack and use that at the start of an engagement then just reload with a normal ass mag when it's time. Sure it can be argued that we could just lighten up the standard infantry rifle instead but as all of these weights get lower the real weight to weight difference between weapon systems becomes smaller and smaller. This isn't even mentioning what we might be able to do about mag and belt weight...

How's it really compare to the MK48? My unit got to use some MK48's back in 2011. The M240 is a heavy mofo...then add that 1000 rounds to lug around...spare barrel...tripod if you are in a really sucky job. Life-Cycle in a lab isn't the same as in the field... Regardless, that they are trying to improve is still great.

MK48 has more common than PKM than its stablemate M240 but it hasn't been that impressive when compared to PKM while M240 is an entirely different category. In western or similarly influenced militaries are trying to get weight of their mg down while Russians especially in their special units are trying to get a more robust PKM ie PKP as they found out that PKM doesn't have the robustness if one doesn't have the time to change barrel during fire fights. Usually special forces firefights are short and fierce with lots of rounds. So they opted for much heavier mg but without the barrel changing ability. This still puts PKP within the M240L category. The barrel change in PKM is kinda hassel, so it also became one of the contributing factor in PKP. How all these modernized platforms compared to new generation of sub 17 pounds or 7kg machine guns in terms of reliability, carrying ability sustained and intense firepower remains to be seen or if being used the reports are still not out in the open.

Has this new MG gone through field trials? The original M-16 was very lite. So much so that under harsh use the barrel could get bent and the high stress points on the upper and lower could crack.
@Front-Toward-Enemy Жыл бұрын
By “high stress use”, do you mean some dumb private using it to open ammo crates? That seems to be the most common reason the barrels bent on the old xm16e1.
