With an aftermarket gear set we could do a 1.57 1st gear in the 2 speed 400

I don't get it why not just build a power glide. Other than the toughness the other benefit of the 400 is an extra gear! I never understood eliminating a gear and infact don't understand why everybody don't jump on the 6 and 8 speed wagon.

Several reasons you’d want a 2 speed 400 over a glide. The first being cost. A 1500+hp capable glide is going to cost you $7-8k. These 2 speed 400s around 40% cheaper. The next big advantage being the 1st gear ratio. The tallest 1st gear ratio you can get in a glide is a 1.69. These 2 speed 400s with oem gear sets are a 1.48 1st gear. Not only giving you a taller starting line ratio for no prep but also keeping your rpm shift drop lower because you’re going from a 1.48 to a 1.0 (.48 drop) instead of a 1.69 to 1.0 (.69 drop) the smaller shift drop keeps the engine in its peak power range and helps keep from losing the tire on the shift.

Popatop...PGs are weak and cost way too much to get to handle the power. Plus you have more gear options with a th400. And 6, 8, and 10 speeds are junk, cost too much, and are slower. All those gear changes slow you down. That's why Ryan Martin said he made the wrong decision to do a 10 speed instead of a th400, for that big small tire race they did. You must not be a racer and just hear all this PG garbage hype... There's a reason you don't see them in big power cars.

Stock case 400s have been 4.0s. 2500+hp. The aluminum direct drum keeps the driver safe. This is a budget minded transmission. An SFI case would add over $3000 to the build.
