Southern Electrical Contracting have the contract to maintain and upgrade street lighting in most parts of the UK it seems, at the moment they are replacing or retro fitting street lights for new Low Energy types and not only that they are no longer independant with a photocell on top, but have been replaced by a radio controlled system Wi-Mac this means that all the street lights in an area up to 250 can be switched on by one node ( main controller with photocell which can be controlled by a GPRS signal for switching patterns or dimming facilities over night reducing costs to your council.
These new low energy lamps made by Philips are smaller in size , are controlled by electronic control gear instead of ballasts or transformersand burn much brighter for the slight increase in wattage and can now be dimmed and monitored by local authorities for failure and efficiency.

not long now before our streets are bathed in cold, unwelcoming bright white light rather than the brilliant orange/yellow of sodium. i wouldn't mind so much if they put amber filters over the lamps, but i also wouldnt mind if all the LEDS broke and we had no other choice than to go back to LPS.

And besides, SOX was just as efficient as LED. Who cares if their color rendering index is poor? The new LED’s are mostly harsh and way too bright.

Many municipalities are specifying 2700K and 3000K LED modules for roadway lighting in residential and some commercial areas which give off a warmer incandescent or halogen color of light which is not as annoying as the 4000K and 5000K LED fixtures.

Tom Jardine I agree with you about LED street lights as they are ugly to look at and they emit is to blue. The LED street light head have no style whatsoever.

We are on the third generation of street lights here in the village, low pressure sodium aka Sox, then HPS with dimming which didn’t last for very long, more powerful lamp at around 60 watt I think as lower outputs are not dimmable, and now we are gradually getting LED retro fitted ones, same colour rendering as the HPS but they are LED, a simply 5 minute gear tray swap it seems.

west sussex street lighting collector in Cornwall it seems we have the newest stock of streetlights, compared to most other parts of the Uk, there are a few small villages and hamlets that have the odd sox luminaries still in existence and they get maintained too.

They have them on nearly every main road in rotherham uk and I've already see some that don't work and on my way to work at 5:30am a lot have been switched off even though it's still very dark. Infact I'm sure I saw them fitting some of Them Thursday morning at 5:30am!!!

Totally agree, replaced by new technology and using a more powerful lamp in order to dim them to the sort of output which they have just replaced, makes no sense whatsoever, and plus the fact they discovered that dimming the new lamps shortens the life of the new control gear and lamp making them unreliable, so they are only able to dim them to 75% instead of the intended 50% and when they fail it’s being replaced by LED technology which they are able to dim to 50% or less ! In Cornwall here there are so many types of LED variants so good and some not even worth turning on as the output is so bad it’s dangerous, they need to assess the light output required at ground level and make it a mandatory and safe level of light and roll that specification out county wide, at least with the old technology you had a more specific and regulated output uniform in output rather than the wishy washy output of all these LED variants. Son or Sox lamps i like them both, sox highly efficient on quieter roads and Son for busier roads !!
@TheSoxmania
@TheSoxmania 11 жыл бұрын
why they waste money doing this is beyond me, SOX is a very efficient lamp, it's lumen output does not diminish with time unlike fluorescent or SON, all they need to do is clean them at least every few months, replace a photocell every few years, or very rarely a lamp, the new lights just burn out after a year, we had a load of these put up and you can guarrantee that you see the cherrypicker out at least once a week pulling apart the damn near brand new lights to repair the flaming things!

Thats progress for you if you can call it that, but the main advantage of these new light fittings is now they are dimmable and also they can monitor all of the lamps remotely !! with a Wi_mac Wifi system that links them all up to a central node that does all the switching off of a group of 250 lamps that all link back to this node that you can see on the top of one of the lamp posts, whick looks like a normall photocell which it is but its bigger and has the radio switching bit incorporated

So we had 35Watt Sox lamps before in residential streets and now we have 60Watt types but they are dimmable, so where's the saving then ?? lol One of the main problems I find is the poor location of some of these lamp fixtures, such as in amongst trees and so some area's where these lamps have been upgraded are actually worse for the upgrade than when they had SOX or SON lamps which seemed to light the road up better Light source HID: 1 x MASTER CosmoWhite CPO-TW / PGZ12 / 45, 60, 90 W

The Lamp housing is the Iridium family of lights from Philips Lighting, and I have read that the 45W version of the lamp is not dimmable, but the Council here in Cornwall have been running trials dimming the lights in certain villages to see the effect of dimming and also for the reception of coments from the public as well, SEC have been busy here replacing most of the old SOX and SON types of lamps here in most of Cornwall over the past 3 years

Yes i remember back in the late 1960s when we had the old white street lights, then in my village (collingham) thay put new bluey/white lights up (forgot what them were called) but now horrible orange ones, Here in Farndon Nottinghamshire them just starting to put new white ones back up, horraa. you would think in this day & age new solar types would also be used. I will keep my eye open for new types of fittings, Some snazzy ones gone up on A5 near Tamworth but havnt seen them at night yet.

This is a shame, This is happening here in Durham aswell... it seems to be happening quite fast aswell, i fail to see how the council are saving money by doing this as they are £200 per fitting and £45+ for each cosmo lamp plus the ballasts fail early.. they need to just swap the SON lamps for Tubular MH Lamps imo
