30/30 is an awesome old round, and a lot of people turn their nose up at the mention of "30/30." Thanks for showing what the old .30 caliber can do!! The "farm" is so pretty and green!!

True, but over $2000.00 for the 45-70 model is absolutely ridiculous. These were meant to be a kids 1st deer rifle or working mans hunting gun

@@frankbrowning328 retail is a little over 1200 for the 1895 SBL. If you are paying over 2000 to the scalpers on GB you are taking a bath. Search the largest Ruger dealers in the country and put in an order. You'll wait a couple of months but you'll get one at a reasonable price.

My Winchester 94 is beautifully made by Miroku of Japan. I’m now inspired to do some loading and accuracy work but frankly I doubt It will equal this 1moa performance. How did Ruger manage to accurize and mass produce a rifle that was never expected to compete with bolt actions? Looking forward to an engineering story. Best wishes from south west England.

@@danielsteiner7634 In my experience, .45-70 always seems accurate out of any gun. I've fired it from H&R Handi rifles, Marlin 1895's and a Winchester 1886, it's always been incredibly accurate. Must be something inherent with the round. Of course, it's sheer mass is a factor - but that alone doesn't explain the accuracy I've gotten from gold. Ol' .45-70 Government

Great video George with your new Ruger Marlin 336. Think it important that folks know the process for “Cold hammer forging” as compared to “button rifling.” (There are videos of the process on YT). I owned an old “straight grip” 95 Marlin which had a micro groove barrel but was never sold that more shallow grooves was an improvement over Ballard style rifling. Which later on Marlin discontinued the Micro groove barrel and went to Ballard rifling.

But this looks extremely well built and the accuracy is outstanding. Thank you for a well done video! I guess I can bump this up to the top of the list… Hopefully the 1894 cowboys are coming soon too. Everyone says the 30-30 has too much drop after 200yrds, but at 300 it seemed quite capable…I wonder if you could hit at 500? Really stretch those 30-30 legs in that Marlin!

If my house was on fire & I could only save one gun, I would grab my Marlin 336 in .30-30 Win. that my dad gave me for Christmas in the 1970's. It's not my most expensive gun, but it is by far my most valuable gun. A lot of hunting memories are attached to that gun. I shoot my Marlin 336 next to my .308 Win Tikka T3 quite often, & my Marlin still holds its own @ 100 yards quite easily. They are such solid, compact, good shooting rifles. I have always said, "if you can't harvest a deer with .30-30, you probably don't belong in the woods." It's a very adequate whitetail round even today! I really believe the Marlin 336 is a special gun, and I am glad to see Ruger is producing a high quality version of it.

I'm a brush hunter, so, if I get 4 to 6 inch groups at 100 yards from my 12 gauge, black powder pumpkin ball loads, I'm happy. And let me tell you, a 586 grain, .735 caliber roundball sitting on top of 120 grains of homemade black powder HURTS.

Excellent accuracy from that new Marlin 336! With little to no wind, I'll bet that 300 yard group would tighten up even more. Now there is a lever gun with very close bolt gun accuracy! Great video! Ruger has not only resurrected the Marlin lever action, but has tweaked the hidden potential that I knew this rifle always had. Now if I could only find one. I noticed that a few(4) of the new 336's have already turned up on the Gun Broker site with asking prices about $200 above MSRP. Disappointing to us Marlin devotees waiting so long to get our hands on one. 😖 I would hope that Ruger will look into this and somehow correct the availability to consumer issue that seems to be, currently, somewhat exploited.

The first three calibers mentioned I've had in both Micro-groove & traditional Ballard rifling. All the rest are Ballard rifling. All the Ballard rifled guns consistently shot way more accurately than the micro-groove ones by better than 50 %. Suffice to say I'm not a fan of micro-groove rifling. Although I didn't quite pick up performance variations expected from the micro-groove barrel and other, non-micro-groove barrel, the visuals are interesting. This fascinating visit to the range elicits three related questions pertaining to the VERY impressive accuracy, for a lever action: 1) 06:29 - 06:41 Trigger pull test: is dry firing okay because of the rebounding hammer. Or, ideally, should snap caps be used for trigger pull diagnosis (or dry firing practice at home)? 2) After an afternoon on the range are the metal targets repainted white -- or tossed away? 3 / final question) Regarding accuracy -- which we all strive for -- when shooting at 100 yards and further distances with traditional paper targets, with a suitable scope aiming at the 10x, dead center of the large black circle, seems like the standard practice. However, at 100 yards using the open sights (old school iron sights) it's near impossible with the naked eye to line up to dead center, the 10x ring, SO a six o'clock hold seems like the best alternative to have a fighting chance of precision hits. Regarding the latter, for point of impact specifics does the shooter want her / his rounds to hit the 10x, dead-center ring -- which will equate to point of impact being three to six inches high, depending on the size of the black circle. Or, is the preferred shot placement for accuracy determination the bottom of the black circle -- point of aim? "Thank you, 'Target Suite,'"

Micro-groove barrels have 12 lands and grooves with the rifling being 0.002" deep. Standard barrels, regardless of the method to create the rifling, are usually 0.004" deep with 6 or fewer lands and grooves. It looks like you have a very accurate winner there, George.

I think so Roy. But I did notice that it is a finicky gun to shoot. As soon as I would get sloppy on my technique, those group sizes would balloon! But it's just a matter of shooting discipline. And once I figured that out it was fun to shoot
@TargetSuite
@TargetSuite Жыл бұрын
Yes, Roy, it was very accurate for a lever gun. Heck, it's pretty accurate for any gun. But it requires shooting discipline. Otherwise, it will spray with the best of them.

Haha! Believe it or not, I was in a hurry to get back home to see two grandkids at their piano recital. So I was rushing and couldn't get the scope readjusted for 200 yards and didn't even notice that I was hitting the steel above the watermelon. I thought I would just share the misses with all of you.

Accurate enough out to the ranges you'd be expecting to use a brush gun. Out of curiosity, which of the three types of ammo do you feel gave the best results? The feeling I'm getting from the video, is that you tended to favor the Winchester ammo.
@TargetSuite
@TargetSuite Жыл бұрын
I had more of the Winchester ammo than anything else. I started initially with some federal loads too which performed very well. But I ran out of that quickly. And I wound up with only three rounds left of the Hornady lever evolution ammo. So any sense of favoritism was just based on availability at the time😉

@@TargetSuite Speaking of ammo, Paul Harrell released a video yesterday testing different brands of 45/70 ammo. He seemed rather pleased with the Federal Fusion 300 grain soft point ammo, with it's performance on his "meat target", to the point he said that would be the ammo he would choose the next time he went deer hunting with his 45/70. That's a rare endorsement coming from him. It seemed that he considered the Hornady 325 grain FTX to be a very close second, with nearly identical performance - I'm thinking the deciding factor for him was, 2 of the 3 Hornady FTX bullets lost their jackets going thru the meat target, while the Federal soft point bullets stayed together.

Thanks for your comment. Shedding the copper is my biggest beef against the Hornady FTX and XTP bullets. Neither of them are bonded.

I remember as a kid, hearing other kids saying that their fathers thought the .30-30 was underpowered. These guys were most probably military veterans who had shot .30-06. But the first time I shot a .30-30 I was petty impressed by it's power! And this looks like a very nice platform for launching those bullets. Good shooting.

@frankhinkle5772 The 30-30 has proven to be effective for 128 years. But it is not a magic round that will make up for misplaced shots or bad decisions. And you are right, that new Marlin 336 is a nice launch platform for that old cartridge

Too many animals have been taken down with the 30 30 to discount it. Within its range it's just fine and bullet placement. Amazingly how expensive even this ammo is. Target suite disproves many myths. We are fortunate for this platform.

Obviously a cold hammer forged barrel can be quite accurate. I don't want to say the Micro-Groove rifling was a gimmick exactly; it was just a different way to approach rifling. Marlin was familiar with it and it worked so they kept using it but I wouldn't have any qualms about buying one of the new Ruger-made ones.

HI George, I've been enjoying your videos over the last good while. I'm interested in a lever .44 BUT was surprised, once I started looking into it how the rifle barrel specs are different from pistol AND some times over sized for standard .44 ammo, particularly cast bullets as well as having a 1:38 twist that wouldn't stabilize heavier bullets well. What the heck is up with that?? I have been looking at the henry Big Boy steel side gate. They have a 1:20 twist now (but also don't shoot anything over 260 grain 🤔) and have what kind of LOOKS like a micro rifling BUT zero info found about that. Now that Ruger-Marlin is going to start making the 1984 again, I will have to wait to see what they make. Any how I found all this barrel spec stuff to be pretty interesting and surprisingly little info about it out there, yours and fortune cookie 45 being the exception. If you"re inclined to make video on barrel specs and accuracy, I personally would be fascinated. 👍

Like your videos but new to the site (have only watched two). But, as a long-time shooter who has owned everything from BB guns, pellet guns, .22s, deer rifles, and shotguns, and loved them equally for their design, workmanship, and sense of history, I find it interesting that two shows you've done on Marlin lever-action guns both had scopes on them. When I think of lever-action guns, I think of plain sights. What gives?

Worked at Remington Arms in Ilion, NY for quite awhile and initially was very excited when we acquired Marlin. Working there I was able to select my own rifles and get some really outstanding firearms. When I had to fill in on the Marlin manufacturing line I then got to see why the public wasn't as pleased as I was with mine. I always felt bad for the people on the Marlin line as they were always hamstrung by management whom in turn were held back by the awful money first then quality mindset coming out of the corporate office. I won't get rid of my Remlins as they are called because like I said, I got to cherry pick some quite nice rifles, but I will for sure be spending on the new Ruger made Marlins because I've heard nothing but good things about them. On the one hand it's painful to see a company that I loved working for be torn apart and see the comments people make online blaming the workers, but on the other hand it makes me beyond happy to see that the Marlin lever gun is back and here to stay.

Wow! I really appreciate your inside information. My beef with those years under Remington was not with the workers, of course. I knew exactly what that Investment Group was all about. And they certainly worked their "magic" on several companies, including Remington and the brands under it.

Just my experience- I had an H&R from NY and a Marlin, and both had obvious defects NIB that shouldn't have made it past QC They were fixed under warranty, but still, somebody was asleep at the switch. No excuse for that even with the understanding and knowledge that the bean counters were mostly to blame for Rem's nosedive

Thats ingeresting to hear,I had a marlin, loved it but.... it would always jam up. I sent it back, didn't see it for six months. Came back, took it out and whammo, jammed again. I was more the Pod. So I set it upon myself, got myself some diamond files and other things I needed and fixed it myself. Thank goodness for KZbin how to take it apart. Needless to say It always left a bad taste in my mouth and I sold it. Which I regret now. I did replace it with a Henry which is flawless and accurate. Never blamed the workers as I knew it's always about money. Cheers.

It has been my experience that it isn't the workers in the plant but the bean counting management. I have seen many different industries fall in quality because of this and then be surpassed by companies in other countries. It breaks my heart to see this happen over and over to great American Companies. I hope that this never happens to Ruger!
