Jarvis, great presentation as always! I was at the Martin factory in Nazareth PA just a month ago. They allowed anyone to pick up and play their prototypes as well as a number of models for sale in their gift shop. I had never played a D28 before and was blown away by it when I did. Though I’ve yet to have the privilege of playing any of the boutique brands (Collings, Huss & Dalton etc), I could not imagine a better tone than what came out of that D28 that day. I don’t know if it was Sitka or Adi, but in this video the Adi presents a depth the Sitka does not have. I would take the Marquis.

I just bought an adirondack dread and just as you show, its a punchier bass and midrange, but I prefer my sitka d-35 for strumming. The addy knocks fingerpicking out of the park...you get a great tone with a light touch.

Lovely demo, Adirondack has more oomph and overtones than Sitka! But Sitka is equally great because it has stronger fundamentals overall compared to Adi. Strumming & flattop picking is better on Sitka, whereas light chordal work & fingerpicking would be stellar on Adi. I will take Sitka from this demo!

My 67 yr old ears like the Sitka topped one better. I think it has a prettier more musical tone. The Adirondak is boomier and louder but not as musical in my opinion. If the Sitka is straight braced and the Adirondak scalloped it would make a difference also. I enjoy your videos.

Yes... you are right ! There is a ADIRONDACK vibe right now, and even when it does not sound good or better, people tend to prefer it, because it is Adirondack. In this case here, ADI is louder, yes, have more bass, but there is a lack of richness in the mid and high. There is like a hole starting in the high mid and up. Higher frequency sounds metal and thin. Sitka is more balanced, uniform. Like one instrument as a whole. Not as bassy, but even and musical. And rich in the mids, and warm in the highs. OF COURSE it depend of the construction of the guitar, the bracings, the thinkness Etc etc..

@@andrelefebvre8456 disagree Just depends on the piece of spruce. They can sound identical. And in this demo, the Addy sounded much warmer. Especially the highs which were rounder

I'm so very lucky to have a Martin D-28 Marquis with Adirondack top. Sounds better and better the more I play it (everyday) and it will only get better with time. No top out with heavy strumming. The Marquis has been discontinued for some time now. With 1 3/4" nut and 2 5/16" spacing at the saddle it is a fingerpickers' dream. My son has a Martin D-18 GE (Adirondack top). Also discontinued. Same string spacing as the Marquis. He LOVES it. My Marquis has just a touch more bass tone (we use the same strings). Both have forward shifted 5/16" bracing & are great sounding guitars. The only guitar I might prefer is the Mandolin Brothers special built Martin D-41 Custom Turbo with Adirondack top and 1/4" forward shifted bracing. Can't find one, but I keep looking. I'd never sell the Marquis.

Thank you for this comparison - really good! Of course, if there is a difference in bracing etc, that would account for the difference in sound too. Now, everything is of course subjective, but these are my 0.2 cents; I have recently bought a 000-42 guitar with an Adi top and rosewood back and sides. I have directly compared it with another 000-42 with a sitka top and rosewood back and sides (same maker, i.e. Sigma, and same bracing, scale etc.). Contrary to everything I have ever read, the guitar with the Adi top actually sounded warmer and less bright than the sitka (always read that the opposite was the case). The difference in sound is HUGE, and not minimal at all. My experience reflects what I hear in this video; and, to MY ear, the Adi guitar sounds actually warmer and thicker. And that is just like, well ..., my opinion man ...

i just got two addy top guitars and will never go back to sitka in terms of production guitars.. However, I believe alot of mass-produced sitka guitars just let the wood be too thick for the tops.....sitka is harder and stiffer than addy so it can be thinner. I am willing to bet that if sitka were planed a bit thinner it would give it a punch closer to addy. Some of the boutique sitka guitars I have heard have great response i think because the luthier really trims down and voices the sitka instead of using a cookie cutter thickness.
@sc12100
@sc12100 2 жыл бұрын
That’s not true at all. Sitka is less dense than red spruce in a 1:1 ratio (thickness). Red Spruce is a much stiffer spruce than Sitka and that’s the reason it can take years for red spruce to open up compared to sitka.

I’ve owned and played many red spruce topped guitars. I prefer Sitka. Red spruce takes many years to break in and ime - bright and a little harsh sounding. Yeah I’m in the minority when it comes to preferring Sitka over Red Spruce. I love European spruce more than Adirondack.

You have to have really good technique to make ADI tops sound good. You can't pick one up and start making it sound good your not warmed up or tuned in, they broadcast mistakes with their clarity and note separation, also it will broadcast if you are out of tune quickly. You really have to pay attention to your right hand when playing an Adi top. The punchiness really makes mistakes stand out. Sitka tops tend to compress more so you can strum it hard and get more consistent sound at different intensities once you're strumming hard enough. But if you are playing at your a+++ game you can get the Adi tops to sound amazing and have more sound control, in comparison to the sitka, particulary on the treble/ mid end! Also Engleman provides more punch and more bright than Adirondack with a similar volume increase and even less overtone IMO. Sitka is warmer and projects more overtones IMO than Adirondack, where Adirondack is more clear direct with more treble/mid bite, and Engleman more direct and brighter.

@@brandonburdick7820 I guess. I don't find it you need to be perfect with Addy. It's just a little more clear. The difference isn't isnane. Takes a little longer to open up. That's it. Doesn't take years 😂. You guys must be getting heavily braced guitars

Too much focus in the guitar world on the woods used to make the instrument instead of focusing on actual playing. If you are a good player nobody cares what woods the guitar is made of.
