Comparing Moon Spruce & Red/ Adirondack Spruce, on 2 Jimmy Edmonds D-18 Guitars

The moon spruce has clearer note separation and a more crisp treble. The adirondack top sounded a bit muddy, but it had a stronger low end.

The moon spruce definitely has a certain type of pop to it. A friend said he felt like it sounded maybe a little more clearer, while the red spruce sounded more vintage.

I literally just picked up my Shawn Brock model. I sat down there and played it for a few minutes and man. Oh man can’t wait to get home and really dig in.

It started opening up after 30 min. I brought to the fire station the next day and played it and it opened up even more and now it just has a thundering ambient reverb that blooms then keeps on sustaining. Best felling and sounding guitar I’ve ever owned hands down.

I sold a H&D to afford this one and was bummed because that guitar was about perfect. There is no comparison. I have zero regrets or separation anxiety now. I’ll keep this one until I meet the good Lord unless it’s life or death for my wife or kids.

Mr. Brock, they both sound great. It’s probably been mentioned before but your recording of acoustic instruments is a good as it gets on KZbin. Big music stores Could learn from you. Moon spruce definitely has the mids and high mids. Both are terrific. I’d have a hard time choosing too. Happy Holidays

I sure appreciate your compliments on the recording; I strive to just showcase the guitar in its natural abilities, without showcasing myself. I am with you on the big Music Store‘s, it is gotten to the point where every guitar they upload sounds exactly the same, regardless of body size or wood combination. That is a really raw deal in my opinion, because it short changes the buyer. people don’t want to hear something get compressed, EQ jacked with, and all of that; they want to hear the product they will put in their hands. Or at least, that’s what I think, but they are big music stores and I’m just some dude lol.

Great picking Shawn! Both are great sounding guitars. The moon spruce is a little brighter with crips highs and cuts through a little better. The Adirondack topped guitar has a stronger fundamental tone and is a little punchier with a better low end. I prefer the Adi for its pure acoustic tone, but the moon spruce will mic a little easier.

Hey Shawn, you've got two great guitars for sure and you're playing brings out the best in each one. To me the Red Spruce sounded a little more mellow than the Moon Spruce especially the lower stings. I think the Moon Spruce was brighter and more focused in the mid-high strings. Either guitar would be a delight to play but I believe that Moon Spruce is really something special and will only get better. Mahogany guitars rule! BTW, I still love playing my Blazer & Henkes D-18 that I picked up from you last Thanksgiving. Have a Merry Christmas and all the best.

Thanks for your excellent videos and great picking too. Based to what I’m hearing,I prefer Adirondack. Moon spruce will sound great in a couple of years sounds abit stiffer but all and all great . Edmonds have tone !

Listening through a Bose speaker. The Euro spruce guitar has more bass and volume. The red spruce one is a little more defined. But not a million miles apart. id be happy with either.

Man that is a Calton flight case. I have 3 of them; a bonfire orange with purple interior, which is the one you are referring to, a blue granite with silver interior, and a vintage green splatter, that has yellow, pink and purple spots on it, with pink interior. It’s a colorful place around here LMAO.

Man that moon spruce is SWEET like Canadian maple syrup !!! 😊. The adi is .... well .... adi. A cross picking machine. How can you favour one sibling. So I won't. 👭. It would be pointless IMO. Very nice brother!!! EDIT: Although we seem to avoid choosing one over the other (& that is valid), IF - & I stress IF I had to choose only one guitar to own It would without hesitation, be a D18 Dreadnought with red spruce top. I can't imagine being unable to enjoy THAT exquisite dreadnought combination of tone wood. There's a good reason why it's the accepted standard for the majority of flatpickers. That statement is not intended to diminish the exceptional character of ANY quality top wood. But dreadnoughts were born to flatpick & flatpicking lends itself to particular music. That music is best served by the sonic character of Adi ......IMO. Now of course there will always be those who choose a dreadnought for alternate music application & playing styles which favour a smoother tone & attack. Then my opinion goes out the window.... 😀

Well im my opinion when you get to a certain caliber if guitar no matter the maker it's a preference at this point good is good just that simple and Jimmy's guitars are great . After this video and hearing the moonspruce after settling in I am leaning toward that guitar really sou ds different seems to be fuller and more balanced to me
