Pentax 17 owner who got mine in the US from a camera store in Finland, because it’s not available until September over here. Paid a little more but it was totally worth it. Surprisingly fun camera to use and exceeded my expectations, because I was very skeptical of the half frame, but found it to be no issue after shooting my first 20 photos or so. The mentality that people are used to shooting portrait on their phone 100% played out with me. Although I regularly shoot digital and film since forever, still no challenge adjusting.

It is really great to see this existing. I really hope this gives Pentax the node to build something for the enthusiasts, a new Ricoh GR and eventually maybe a next generation K1000 or KX with some modern features, a program mode will be appreciated. Off course all with better materials then the one used in the Pentax 17
@cwantuch4 ай бұрын
@@sondrejohansen48 Totally agree. It’s a start, a bit offbeat one, and I do hope we see some more new cameras from Pentax. Perhaps one positive I hope we all can agree on is that Pentax did try something a bit different with the 17, so hoping they can be creative and put some new spin on a GR or K. And yes, a little better build.

I love hearing different opinions on things. I will say for the Pentax 17, i think the people that wanted a new film camera wanted FF, but Pentax opted to target the younger gen that is more hesitant to shoot film based on film cost. I just need to get my damn 6x17 for my travels. I see weird things and buy them when I could have had a nice 6x17 instead…But I still like my baby Linhof Color, Robot II, and HK gxn 12,5

Right-handed photographer here. I find it very interesting this got brought up, and I'm brought to my experiences shooting the Pentax 67. Since I have really big hands, and the handling ergonomics aren't super great, I opted to attach the left sided wooden handle. I couldn't, for the life of me, keep a straight angle with it because holding it so prominently with my left hand, it was throwing me off. In the end, I opted for the RB67 because I found its shape a little easier to manage relative to the Pentax 67. Though now I'm secretly wondering if being right-handed has handicapped me in some way in photography xD

The Yashica Samurai X3.0 had a left handed and a right handed version
@tomislavmiletic_4 ай бұрын
Nikon DID make a dedicated left - handed camera if I remember correctly somewhere in the 90's, I just can't remember which model it was. Additionally, there's Yashica Samurai Z-L, if you are in the half-frame. And let's not forget many old Exakta cameras that had the shutter button on the left side. All in all there are some, but you must search for them...

The Nikon F2 is one of the most underrated cameras of all time. It's almost the same build quality as a Leica, although Leica owners wouldn't like to know this!
@Renzsu3 ай бұрын
Mwah, I think most Leica owners will attest to the durability of Nikon F bodies. As a Leica and Nikon owner, I'd argue the Leica's are possibly more fragile, due to the rangefinder mechanism. A hard bump can knock it out of alignment. Not that you can't adjust that, but yeah, just saying these are all quite accurate mechanisms and it IS possible to break them. A plastic Holga is arguably less fragile. They're not build to the same standard, so perhaps not as durable. But those are two different things imo.

Re the lefty comment, I had a really interesting experience recently. (I'm a lefty lol) I have the FX30, and the screen flips out to the left of the camera. I've had SO MANY cameras like this, it's never been an issue at all, the lefty thing never crossed my mind. UNTIL! I shot this wedding recently, and I put a top handle onto the FX30, and I grabbed it with my left hand out of instinct and wouldn't you know, the way I hold the camera, my left forearm blocks the screen. So that's my big lefty camera issue. Never really thought about the shutter button being on the left or anything like that though. I also play guitar and bass righty too, so I might not be the right example lol.

my thing with the pentax is im not surprised its expensive, but it wouldnt ultimately have demanded too much higher of a price to also not be half frame. im not a pixel peeping photog, but i do like to have a bit of bokeh/separation even with my point and shoots, and half-frame really limits that how shallow you can get. and for the price i just dont think its worth it for half frame. like, i doubt youre really going to sell new film shooters at that price, and most folks willing to spend that much on a film camera are going to get something better (admittedly older). also, i live in the denver area, would be down to hang at a photo meetup! also if u ever need some help with bts or anything i work in the commercial video industry so i know how to point a camera and hit the red button 😎

"The perfect camping camera that I’ll never have, for me, would be the GA645Zi" cause of price or cause it's fully electronic aka a time-bomb?

@@metalfingersfilm their RF70 shoot Instax wide which has a 99mm x 62mm image. All manual and has a nice lens. It has a light meter that works for Instax film which has the latitude of a slide film. Ejecting the Instax uses a motor. Seriously, if they could tweak the Instax back a bit into a 120 film back then we have a new 6x9 medium format camera. But for now they have their hands busy on that rollei AF.

Do you think other camera manufacturers would start working on film cameras at some point if Pentax's future cameras turn out to be a success? If so, which manufacturers do you think are most likely to do so?

6:15 yes, exactly right, i expect a half frame toy camera to cost toy camera price. The reason many people shot film from about 2000-2020 was because it was the cheapest way to get full frame performance in a sea of expensive digital crop sensors. But now the tables are turned and digital is cheaper/better than ever, while film has become an expensive niche- and on top of that they release a new camera with WORSE image quality??? They could have done the exact same R&D and released a similar portrait orientation camera but in 645 medium format. They could charge a grand for it and I would HAPPILY pay it because that would be a ground breaking new camera!! For now I will keep shooting my Fujifilm GS645S, medium format rangefinder with manual exposure control and a hot shoe and... you know, the apparently cheap alternative to 35mm half frame!
