My KLS is 21.3kg... If you build a full powered enduro at 22kg it won't last a day. Why is weight such a big deal these days? EP8 sucks. Cable tourism and flex chainstays are just a no no. Why would someone buy this over a Strive or Wild
@tone3519985 ай бұрын
@@jordanmackay3568 Canyon Strive On is my favorite bike at the moment. However, I am not an extreme rider, so I don't need the Fox 38 fork and a 750W battery every day. I currently ride a Bosch CX motor, and as powerful as it is, my drivetrain suffers. Having a little bit less power and a bit of rattle wouldn't bother me to get that magic 20kg bike with a removable battery. People would go absolutely nuts over such a bike. I don't see why not!
@jezarnold11065 ай бұрын
I rode the 750w aluminium on Monday and compared to my 2020 e160 9000 with the e8000 motor, the difference is like night and day. The new bike with longer chainsaws and slacker head tube eats up the rough stuff, so much more stable than the older model. And the new ep801 is superb. Definitely going to be my next bike 👍

I’m so glad to hear Hans talk about Class 1 bikes here in the States. It will be great when we can ride more parks. South Carolina passed Class 1 emtb in the parks. I live in the mountains of North Carolina with great places to ride but still have issues with the rules. Hope it changes soon.

I agree about the sizing! I always rode large bikes when I road 26" wheels, since I started riding 29ers I always felt they were big, my last bike was a Giant trance x 29er. I recently picked up a Giant Riegn E+ 3 my first E bike and went with medium and it actually feels much better, faster, and more flickable than my trance x 29er!

That's great! What size is recommended for you by Giant just out of curiosity ?

For people that are lazy like me. Gemini summary: Merida has launched a new platform of e-mountain bikes with 170 mil travel in both a 750 watt-hour and a 625 watt-hour battery. The bikes are available in three models: the 160 CF (carbon fiber), the 160 Alloy (aluminum), and the eONE-SIXTY 8000. The 160 CF and the eONE-SIXTY 8000 come with a removable battery, while the 160 Alloy has a non-removable battery. The 160 CF weighs 22 kilos and is the lightest of the three models. Merida is not planning to make a light-weight, short-travel e-mountain bike in the foreseeable future. John rode a 500mm reach bike, while his height is 172 cm. The geometry of the new e-mountain bikes is different from the geometry of Merida's regular mountain bikes. The head angle is steeper and the seat angle is slacker on the e-mountain bikes. John will be going on a live tour called "Maps and Mayhem" throughout the UK in March.

I look forward to trying this bike. A good friend is a Merida dealer so he always puts one of the new bikes in the van so we can have a spin. The previous bike was superb, it had a very predictable turn in and great stability in corners. It was easy to get good flow on the trails. The last bike had a kink in the top tube to seat post connection and I think they should have kept that because when hammering the trails it was easy to steer with your knees and having the tube out of the way you could maneuver easily. Also, I have had bikes with all the motors, bosch all day long.

I know this will never happen but the simplest solution is normally the best. . I have a carbon Ebike with a 750 battery but on all 2 hour evening rides and. Short weekend rides it’s to much battery. Oh for a 400 watt battery to swap in for short rides and swap to the 750 for big epic. . The Bosch can be turned up and down in the app to suit as well . 1 bike full power but 2 batteries perfect. . Just make a half battery in a full case so it just clips in. . 🙏

23:30 Instead of doing rides with the different batteries, use some technology to identically test the battery drains. When riding there's always variability, with a constant (laboratory) load you'll find out precisely.

Since I started waxing the chain on my bike I no longer see gearboxes as a big game changer. The key selling point of low maintenance looses its desire when a waxed chain is already low maintenance. Tbh I think we are beyond game changers... its more traditional evolution similar to conventional mtbs for the next few years.
@embn5 ай бұрын
What changes can you see happening over the next few years?
@andyarchitect5 ай бұрын
@@embn I expect progressively more compact motors and batteries... technology like autoshift and ABS to filter down to lower price points... and emtbs to almost take over from full suspension mtbs. It seems like people either want a hardtail mtb if they are on a budget, but then want to jump up to an emtb if they are planning to spend more than £2k... its like if you are already spending a lot then it makes sense to spend more to get the full package.

Absolutely gorgeous! I think the weight is understandable for what you are getting. The geometry seems right up my alley. Unfortunately I don’t think I’ll ever get carbon. Spending all that cash for something I would be scared to crash on is not my thing. BTW I couldn’t find the price, the link you mentioned 🤷🏻♂️ I’m already on a full power fat cow @59lbs! 😳 my next one is definitely going to be lighter, whether it’s full power or mid assist is to be determined when I’m ready to upgrade. Guessing in about 2 or 3 years. Absolutely loving the EMTB life 😎

Are the 350w/h batteries available for the 2021 e160 ? I find the battery runs down far to quickly imo and I’ve rode Bosch which seem to be a better motor and battery. If I could get a range extender for mine it would make it more bare able.

It's not accurate to say lighter ebikes will not last and are inferior to heavier ones with burlier components. It all depends on the type of riding you do, a 17kg light weight ebike is more of a XC bike, and way more fun on XC trails than a 22KG bike with burlier components you don't need. Likewise if you want to ride more knarly trail centres or downhill etc you could benefit from a heavier build. It's a fact a 17kg bike will feel totally different from a 22kg bike and will suit different environments. This bike at 22kg seems a bit heavy for what it claims to be, 22kg is not a light or mid weight ebike 🤔

No mention if all the models now use the EP801.? The EP8 would not be a good choice IMO notwithstanding Merida are very close with Shimano.

Unless shimano gives us a solid fix for ep8 issues or makes the ep801 to fit our 2022 and 2023 merida e160s we will be leaving shimano motor altogether and that name that is circling the land from down under shimcrapo will stick. Most of us are waiting for the new canyon strive on to hit the market and will make our moves from there. GIVE US A NEW MOTOR OPTION TO REPLACE THE OLD EP8 OR RISK LOOSING A HUGE CHUNK OF THE MARKET ALTOGETHER AND HAVING SHIMCRAPO NAME TAG STICK LIKE 💩
