Embracing the legacy of MG at its centennial milestone, the rumoured forthcoming MG4 estate is poised to redefine the electric vehicle (EV) segment with a harmonious blend of style, functionality, and ground-breaking technology that partly follows on in the MG5 models guise.
When - rather than if - the MG4 Estate comes off, will build on MG4 hatch with its modern family needs, safety and MG heritage, yet offering enhanced space without compromising on performance or affordability. MG's strategic innovation ensures that an MG4 estate will not only continue the brand's tradition of offering exceptional value but also push the boundaries of what consumers expect from an accessible EV which already has so much love.

Is an estate version of the MG4 the way to go, or should a new MG5 be the next step? What are your thoughts?

I would like an mg4 estate standard range with 60kwh lfp battery (around 400-450 km range) and a stronger battery heater (upgrade from 3kw to 5 kw and raise the temp to 15 degrees celsius), and a luggage capacity of at least 550 l. Generally the lfp battery in MG cars have problems in the nordic countries with achieving decent charge speeds even with the battery heater. (20-40kw charge speed). Add a bit higher tow capacity (750 kg at least) and fix the basic software issues, it's a no frills simple practical workhorse for the more practical customer. There's no need for sunroof. So I think MG is on to something and it might be a success, at least if they work on testing their models better in colder climate.

It’ll be interesting to see if MG pursue it and more so what powertrain and system they use, no doubt well here something sooner rather than later.

Extremely happy with my MG4 SE. First road trip yesterday 180mile round trip (no charger on route) on A & B roads & Motorway in rain snow and temperatures below 4c all day. I took it easy on motorway kept it at 60mph in ACC ( conditions meant that I wouldn't of gone much quicker in anycar, it was horrendous). The car was comfy, quiet and great. Maybe im ignorant, or maybe its because ive come from a 2011 Volvo, but I find LKA and ACC fine if used correctly. It does 100% what I expect it to do and I just dont see the issue with turning it off if you dont like it. It takes seconds, yes its slightly annoying if you have to do it everytime you open the door ( as I had to) but come on....first world problems ehh. Anyway, if they do an estate in the future it will 100% be at the top of my list.

Thank you Shaun, sounds like a successful road trip to us - great to hear a real world account from an owner, I think you’re spot on with term ‘if used properly’ and it’s interesting to hear you come from an earlier Volvo too, like you we’ve always found it fine, as for the car, pretty good across the board and we drive a W124 Coupe from 92. Watch this space for the estate 😀

Is it the MG4 in general, or if this estate came with the MG3 hybrid powertrain, would you drive it, Richard?

Think a estate version would go down well here in the UK...but only with a petrol engine 😊😊🎉

Upgrade the base LFP battery to 55 kw/h and make sure that it has at least 1500 litres of luggage capacity with the seats folded. Keep the price to within 1000 pounds of the equivalent hatch. Then it would be a winner and make it to my short list for my next car.

An MG4 estate with LKA disabled, roof rails that can take a good weight, do-away with rear spoiler,so that when you open hatch long stuff on the roof rack doesn't touch it. & keep the non-powered hatchback, NO piano-black ANYWHERE..! , & no glass roof please, & lastly.. please integrate the screens INTO the dashboard, not sticking-out so some monk-anic can break it off...🤔👍

The MG4 is a very good looking car. The MG5 is a quite attractive affordable estate car for taxi drivers!!

I had an original MG5 without MG Pilot. It was a great car with admittedly handling limations. I now have a 2022 MG4 which unfortunately, has the appalling MG Pilot on it. The adaptive cruise control is simply awful, the Lane Keep assist is even worse. The Android auto isn't much better. Oh for an MG4 without these ludicrous bits of kit. They can be switched off but they switch back on every time the door is opened. The MG4 is a fabulous car BUT the software is absolutely atrocious. Car went in for a service in December, then a software upgrade in January. No response from MG so the upgrade couldn't be done, so it's booked in again early April when hopefully things will improve, but I'm not holding my breath.

It's interesting, as every MG4 we've had on review - and bear in mind we've done over 2,000 miles in them - has been a pleasure to drive. Adaptive cruise was fine, and the lane keep assist wasn't intrusive - the car won't allow you to change lanes if you don't indicate, but we don't need to tell you that, lol! Bottom line is, to get the higher NCAP we all need to get used to it. The safety will get stronger and stronger until manufacturers are ready to unveil autonomous driving. If you think the MG4's safety suite is finicky, try one of their competitors. Can you see the benefits of the estate version of the MG4 @geoffmorris1769?

I've been driving 50 over years. I don't need these ludicrous gimmicks. Lane Keep assist is simply dangerous, many owners call it Lane Kill Assist. The adaptive cruise control slams on the brakes on empty roads. A death trap. You say the Lane Keep assist is not intrusive. OMG. I've been shunted inside to within 2 feet of a wagon on the M60 while I was overtaking it, driving in a straight line, no need to indicate. Death trap. Try driving on congested motorways with LKA switched on. You might change your mind.

@geoffmorris1769 we do as demonstrated, our daily is a C124 33 years old, and us as demonstrated on documented road trips 4 to be exact drive with MG pilot with ease, as do many of our audience, granted a small percentage aren’t keen, yet understand why it’s there. I’ve driven far more aggressive systems, it’s noticeable but that’s its job, plus the brake or accelerator overrides it. NCAP think you and everybody else does, hence it WILL get stricter. It’s a simple choice until at least 2035 go for the MG BGT or a modern vehicle with a substantial safety system. We do both 😀

I'm struggling to understand your last comments. However, you do need to see what some owners of the MG4 are saying on various Facebook pages. Some are happy, some are shocked by the appallingly random behaviour of the MG4 Pilot. Some have sold the cars. MG mechanics have told me that they know and MG know that there are problems with the software. To dismiss this saying you have driven over 2,000 miles in MG4 vehicle is a bit hard to take, I can assure you I've driven way, way over that figure mainly on congested roads in Urban environments (fine in rural areas with no traffic and well painted road markings) but I spend a couple of minutes switching off all the so called safety assists before I set off, some are just dangerous. The car drives brilliantly, it is great as long as the MG Pilot is disarmed.

Not experienced any of that and that's the same for many others, go and read the comments on our road trips and owners experiences, I have nothing to gain from being economical with the truth, we collect cars and I've worked on many a motor too, therefore i'm no spring chicken, I also speak regularly with people in the industry and i know of far more evasive systems. MG Pilot has given myself or Annabelle any challenges, and that includes X Power a couple of months ago. The only thing that used to challenge me was accessing the system in the earlier infotainment systems, bar that nothing.
