I took part in the Lord Mayor`s show in 1948 and in 1951 as a member of the Essex Regiment Band. our Company Sergeant Major , CSM Hicks., who had once been a Drummer, put on a dazzling show of throwing the mace which he maintained along all of the route The question arises,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Do Drum Majors ever throw the mace now? The only Drum Majors in the Armed Forces that do drill movements similar to twirl would be the Royal Marines Drum majors, when they do the Stars & Gazes. Some people call them the "Propeller". The Army has it written in the Drum major Drill manuals, it states that the 'Staff (Mace) shall never go above the shoulders'. From what I know another factor why the Army Drum Majors stopped twirling Staffs, was because sometime in the late 50s or 60s during one of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo a Drum Major came out the Castle draw bridge twirling his Staff and threw it up in the air. Sadly, this went horribly as the Staff came back down and he couldn't catch it, it hit the ground splitting the crown of the Staff. Which flew into the stands. After that at least in the Tattoo Drum Majors weren't allowed to do anything extravagant.

@@Nathan.150Hey, you told me that Orderly duties were a thing of the past, and I asked you who told you this? And you never replied. I'd still like to know.

As far as I know the only drum major's who throw the mace during this parade are the ones of the Christs School. Think I got them doing it once during the parade, will be in a video coming up in the next few days, hopefully.

The processional route (including return) is quite long, as is the procession itself, but when I went as a kid (many years) the "crowd" would CERTAINLY have been more than 1-2 deep. We stood at various different locations at different times... And this lot also seem as quiet as the grave... All a bit sad, TBH [8:33 "The Crags of Tumbledown" - a very meaningful and moving (and GOOD) march for us back in the day]

I do!!!! Haha, all jokes aside. It's 'The Acorn' by Ron Goodwin. I actually have a snare drum "cover" version on my channel. A spiffing march!
