I'd rather they'd not gone down the IP route. Disney and Universal can do it as they own the IPs, so it costs them nothing. Merlin presumably have to pay for the licence. That's money that goes directly out of the park and sucks money out of the budget for the attraction. I'd rather they came up with their own ideas and invested the money they saved into creating better attractions and general park maintenance. You just know that, to save money that they don't really have, the Minecraft theming is going to be vinyl prints stuck to plywood. Sun, rain and fiddling fingers will make it look tired really quickly (like it already does on minifigure speedway at Legoland).

Yeah, I agree, the only places where I think it has worked are Paultons (Peppa Pig) and Drayton Manor (Thomas Land) but those parks are (or starting to) aimed at younger families, rather than Alton Towers who's primary audience are thrill seekers. I can't see how this will attract many more customers to Alton Towers than it would already. Just seem a waste of money paying for the IP when that could be spent on maintenance and improving the ride availability which has become a massive problem for them this year.

I think this a good move for Merlin. While I also prefer original themes, you cannot deny the power of the Minecraft brand. It's still going 12 years strong, and I believe it will keep getting stronger. It's owned by Microsoft who have no end of cash to throw at the brand to ensure it thrives, it's one of the jewels of Microsoft's Xbox Game Pass and it thrives on literally every platform imaginable. I think this will attract loads of people and I think it's really the adrenaline Merlin needed in it's vein. Hopefully, this will drive attendence up for Merlin. That being said, I am still deeply concerned for the future of Alton Towers. I think it's clear that Merlin's strategy for dealing with Universal GB has been to invest in it's London assets to try and leech from Universal's tourism. I think Alton is too remote for most tourists to visit, and I think Merlin has realised that and is practically running Alton at a minimum in favour of it's London assets. This will only get worse when Universal GB starts operating. I don't think Alton Towers will close or anything, but I don't think we're ever going to see it return to it's former glory - or really being as innovative and cutting edge as it once was.

Towers is so inaccessible for anyone who doesn't have a car. A good investment for them would be finding a way to fix that. So many young people without a car look must be getting put off by it's inaccessibility.

Think Merlin are making huge mistake going down the IP route. I do understand IP can be a draw to the park if executed properly, but comes at a cost for license and with the cost cutting going on begs to wonder where that decision is coming from.

As much as I understand Minecraft is a big ip and very popular, I would have preferred the money to be invested in new coasters and upgrading already existing areas especially in Alton towers and Thorpe park. 85 million could build 5 or 6 new rollercoasters haha, but then I’m more a thrill seeker and want as many fast and tall rollercoasters as we can get. I would be incredibly shocked if they didn't do an indoor dark ride for Minecraft. Would make complete sense. More indoor attractions so they don't close when it's rainy/windy, and provides the opportunity to make the attraction truly immersive

I think Alton Towers sadly isn't a priority for Merlin anymore. With Universal GB on the horizon, I think Merlin are hyper focused on Thorpe Park and Chessington as realistically, tourists stopping in London for Universal might go to one of those two as well, but are highly unlikely to go to Alton Towers - so from the business perspective, it makes sense to spend money on the attractions that have a chance of attracting tourists from your competition.

I have never played or been interested in playing Minecraft, not my type of game, but interested to see how this turns out & what it looks like once its built and opened in future. Can see Jumanji last at least 5 or 6 more years as there is another movie coming out either this year or next year? Final chapter? Depends how movie does? Hoping it doesn't disappoint? As World of Jumanji is epic at the park of Chessington, be a shame if it all of a sudden ends. For temporary creations, IP's are good, to yeah get people in big numbers through gates, but 100% agreed and prefer original themes. I was kind of hoping universal would use this ip, but i think that as long as they use plenty of physical sets and not screens, it will be really great. I understand the worry of an IP disappearing but as someone involved in the world of gaming, if theres one franchise not going anywhere any time soon, its Minecraft! There's an interactive minecraft experience in the US atm where you collect resources and fight off enemies with screens and such, with an in game cape you can take home after. It sounds like that is the kind of thing they will want to do more of. Personally, having played minecraft for 15 years, im very excited!

This may be a hot take but I think Merlin is making a smart move, Minecraft has been around for well over decade now and has a strong positive influence in society (despite some controversy over a few content creators in the Minecraft community) it’s been such an impact especially coming from the gaming world it’s kind of a way of giving back to the gaming world. I’m surprised universal didn’t get the chance to cash in on it (maybe they just preferred Nintendo overall) but based on the year Merlin had, this gives them a strong chance to make a strong comeback and reach a brand new audience with Minecraft being loved by many people (my younger self included). Location wise I would say for the uk it’ll most likely be chessington since marketing wise it goes with that sort of "travelling around the world" theme, as for the USA I wouldn’t have it be next to Legoland Florida, it would probably be a weird eyesore to have Lego, peppa pig and Minecraft together (it just feels weird) but I would have it be in a more "lesser known" state (in the theme park world) like Atlanta, Cleveland or maybe even take the more famous route and put it in LA

Wild Asia is beautiful and atmospheric. As much as I’m glad a new coaster will come to chessington, not a fan of the Minecraft theme, it looks cheap, tacky and childish. Would have rather Wild Asia just got revamped and the new coaster themed in to that instead. Ruins the chessington vibe and I have a feeling it will end up like Angry Birds becoming obsolete in 10 years or so. Not impressed with this.

I’m not sure about Minecraft. If you’re not into Spiderman, you can at least appreciate the rides and the spectacle of them. If you’re not into Minecraft, the world of Minecraft looks rubbish. I don’t think anybody who’s not into Minecraft really wants anything to do with Minecraft. It’s this polarising nature of the IP that really makes me wonder about it, particularly beyond parks aimed at younger guests.

I am familiar with Minecraft... and gosh, that concept art hurts my eyes. Minecraft is not known for looking beautiful, it is designed to be simplistic and blocky because it is functional to the gameplay. Do I have faith that Merlin can translate this blocky art style into a real-life physical set that won’t make my eyes bleed? no I do not. I can't imagine how one could feel immersed in a Minecraft themed area, when it will be hugely inconsistent to what fans expect. Imagine, to make this land believable Merlin would have to go as far to even design square/blocky toilets, which they will not do... Immersion will be further broken through the absence of blocky people/characters. Huge letdown from Merlin, clearly desperate and trying to capitalise on young gamers and an art style that can be manufactured very cheaply (minus the licence). I think the blocky IP will just create something ugly, rather than a work of art, and so its appeal will be both limited and short lived.

Its certainly an interesting idea. Ive been an avid Minecraft player since it first came out so i have a lot of investment in the IP and bought it on multiple platforms so seeing it in real life would be awesome if they do it justice. Plus, the love for the IP spikes often so i think it'll last for a while. However,i feel this was the result of the Minecraft movie set to release (think its next year?) And rhat Merlin could be chasing the hype of the movie? Honestly tho,im down for it! If they do as good of a job as the set production of the movie,then thats gonna be epic

Minecraft does have an iPhone app!! Which I play on a regular basis!!! It’s addictive and you get hooked really quickly on the game from creative mode (where you can build as you wish) to survival where you can shoot baddies such as creepers/skeletons and spiders!!
