Many thanks Peter for taking the time to give us a first look at this new Jug . I haven’t built a bubble top P47 yet so I have high hopes and I have some limited edition decals from an AK Interactive publication on the 56th Fighter Group to go on a P47 . I’ll probably let everyone else build it first before I decide if I want to risk the decals on a Mini Art Thunderbolt!

Blimey - That looks packed with detail, God knows what the Detailed version will look like. RE Chassis reference. If you look at any WWII references to undercarriage - especially in RAF Literature, it is referred to as the Chassis. Look at the Spitfire gear lever for example. It says Chassis Up/ Down.

MiniArt certainly do some strange models. I never knew a Kugelpanzer was a thing. Not a bad kit but having seen your review I do agree with a lot of your points. Maybe their next foray into aircraft may be a another step up

I was really looking forward to this kit when first announced but having seen some of the issues might give it a pass. Pity. I always like some history about the model I am building so lack of data is disappointing. I guess we have to make allowances about the fact this is Miniart's first venture into aircraft kits and Ukraine is at war after all and its incredible they can produce anything at all of remotely this quality!

Peter that aerial mast is going to get bent if attached so early in the build and it is going to make sanding the fuselage seam finicky. Same with the machine guns in the wings. I like the panel lines and riveting - makes the model more interesting to look at even if some think it is out of scale. Overall a nice kit in my book and I’ve just preordered it.

I've had a lot of Miniart kits and thy are brilliant. I think some of the plastic issues you picked up on have come about since the conflict. I have noticed a bit more flash on their newer kits ( I suspect they have moved production?). Please support this manufacturer as we really need kit manufacturers like this in Europe. I know they strive for perfection and in time the plastic issues will get better. Thanks for the review

Thanks Peter for the review. I didn’t even know about this P-47. News to me. It looks like a great kit with plenty of detail. I agree with some though, that the panel lines are a bit overdone in some areas, and I’m not a huge fan either of rivets at this scale. Still, I think this new P-47 is a keeper and I’ll be ordering one. As modelers, we’re living in good times with new models of interesting subjects, being released every year.. Yep, it’s a good time to be a plastic modeler! Also, I’m looking forward to ICM’s 1/48 B-26 Marauder too!

Mine finally arrived Monday from Squadron. Mine did not have the problem with the clear parts...thank goodness. Remember that when building the kit the sprues attach to the joining surfaces, so make sure these are cleaned up before gluing! For those who commented about the panel lines and embrossed rivets...these will become a lot less prominent after a couple of coats of paint. And it appears that more modelers like having the rivets than not. Glad they use Cartograph decals, the industry standard. I did notice one mistake on the painting guide, calling for the 78th FG aircraft to be painted yellow zinc chromate on top? Lastly, the external stores include the 200 gallon flat fuel tank. That tank was built to COL Schilling's specification...the pilot of the 56th airplane. And that great British invention, the 108 gallon resin/paper tank is depicted magnificently in the kit. I would have liked for the 108 gallon metal tanks and the 150 gallon flat tank to have been in the kit. I give it a 9.25. The instructions and painting guide could be better.

I've read some of the comments, and, to me, if it looks like a duck, it's a duck. The people who see my models wouldn't know a P47 from a Cessna. I personally don't care if the spoked wheel was only on the P47 N. I'm sure there were a few P47s that had maybe a damaged set of wheels installed with whatever was avaliable.

One of the most overlooked British contributions to World War 2 was the design and production of many of the drop tanks used by the American air forces. Without these tanks the daylight bomber offensive could not have continued. As far as the kit goes, Squadron has had mine "Ready to ship" since last Friday! There is also a wonderful British book on the 56th FG called "Zemke's Wolfpack" which I highly recommend to P-47 fans. There are apparently two more P-47's planned by Mini Art... One bit of trivia: The 56th FG was only issued 60 rockets for the bazooka tubes, of which they fired 59!

@@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab My take on the kit: If you have the Tamiya P-47's keep them. The clear parts problem really cannot be solved. The other issue(s) can be. Another review had the same problems with the clear parts, so it was not just a case of bad QC letting a bad shot thru. Thank you for the excellent program. Now if Squadron can just send me my kit...

Hi peter many thanks for your video on the new p47D by Mini Art,looking carefully at the sprue parts there does seem to be a bit too much flash for a brand new moulded kit,i think i am right in saying that after about 15/20yrs the Tamiya p47D has no flash at all,and i agree with your verdict on the clear parts, i am not trying to be a moaner, but we have been waiting on tender hooks for this kit to surly surpass the Tamiya p47,and i think that i can say it is very slightly let down by these couple of moulding fou/pars,but on the whole it looks like a very nice kit, well done mate. 45:52

Hi Peter 😀. This looks great, but so many stencils! About the 'Air Force' thing. Throughout the war, it was all under US Army command -- the United States Air Force wasn't formed until 1947. On Feb. 22, 1944 the Army reorganized all its air forces in Europe -- the 8th and 9th based in the U.K., and the 12th based in Italy since 1943 -- and renamed them as United States Strategic Air Forces in Europe (USSAFE), later known as the United States Air Forces in Europe. Until then, each USAAF Air Force was comprised of a Bomber Command and Fighter Command, which, though separate commands, worked closely together. Under the reorganization, the two commands of VIII Bomber and Fighter were unified and became the Eighth Air Force. So, by the dates on the box of late 1944, Eighth Air Force was Eighth Air Force -- as part of the USSAFE which was still under Army command. Confused, yet? 😆

Hey Peter, on the point about kitts not containing info / specifications on the model subject, I think I’m okay with not getting any. Having some info come with the kit is an added bonus but I wouldn’t change my mind on whether I get a specific kit or not based on this factor. The way I see it, I can do my own research to whatever extent I am comfortable with online or at the library, the manufacturer saves on ink & paper cost on some basic info etc. I would like to see your views on why this is an important facet for you in model kits. Cheers!

Overall it looks like a very nice kit, though there are a few small accuracy issues ( mains things being some engine details and the corrugated cockoit floor ). I think the ultimate P-47 will be when Eduard get around to doing one. The clear parts are the most disappointing part I think. It will be interesting to see what the fit is like. Notice that the 165 Gal P-38 drop tank are actually a naplam fire bomb as they've got an ignitor attach to the aft end, which they say can be removed ( if just using as a drop tank ) though you would also need to add one to the filler cap if using as a naplam fire bomb. There are really only two styles of wheels, with and without the cover. The 8 spokes wheels were only ever used on the P-47N, though I've seen at least 3 warbirds with them fitted. I've never built a MiniArt kit and this look like it will build into quite a nice kit, but I have a feeling it's going to be a fair bit of work to get there.

It looks as if this kit is aimed at the more experienced modeller. These modellers would usually have there own history and reference material, I can't really see this kit being picked up by a total novice as I'd hardly call it a pocket money kit. Anyway thanks for a great review.

I've detested for 20 years the Tamiya kit and its ridiculously tall clear parts, which completely ruined the look of the model (they belong more on a egg plane than a serious model, and this was true for both the Bubbletop and Razorback). Not to mention the swollen fuselage plan view. It is great to finally see the Tamiya finally made totally obsolete. However this kit did not get the guns perfectly parallel to the ground, so the gun leading edge insert piece of the Tamiya will probably come in handy, as will the few extra Tamiya prop options.

Good review. Seems a bit weird that you would have flash on parts given it is effectively a first edition. Wonder if the base kit is in the bag and the unbagged parts are replaced in the expert version? I have to admit that I rarely read about the aircraft I am building so that doesnt worry me that much.

Peter, I understand... As to the review: it's fair! The strange amount of flash, from a brand new mould, is a tad odd. The thick bubble canopy with its inherent distorsion is also disappointing. I quite like all the surface detail on show, although we'll have to see how it goes together as the joins might need surgery, putting said details in peril of the knife 😊 The proof of the p47 is in the glueing! 😂

The wing guns are all aligned on the wing leading edge. They SHOULD be parallel to the ground line and slope 'across' the LE from inner to outermost. Compare with Tamiya kit from the 90s which gets this right. On the plus side it seems to be the only flaw in the kit.

Sorry, the panel lines look like they were made with a chainsaw. A rivet head in 1/48 would be 0.004 inch (0.1016 mm). Hasegawa does it better, there's just no need for rivets in this scale, all it does is increase the price. Aircraft tolerancing in sheet metal was 1/64 in+- (0.34 mm), at 1/48th it's - 0.0003 in (0.008 mm). It bugs me when Hasegawa in the 80s had Bf 109s in 1/72 & 1/48 with wonderfully fine panel lines, now in 2023 we get, and have been getting, panel lines that have more in common with a ditch. If you enjoy these new models with all these grossly out-of-scale surface features then power to you, enjoy, I'll pass.
