Hi Bo, I own a Studiolive 24 Ser 3 and love it. I'm sure you will too as it will make it easy to have multiple synths connected and running at the same time. Yes, the Chorus and Flanger is now added. Enjoy it. I hope they let you keep it.

This Presonus mixer is designed to compete against the Behringer X32 digital mixer, which is probably the most widely-used small-medium venue sound mixer on the market. Both give big venue console performance (e.g. Midas, DiGiCo, Avid Venue, etc.) at a club musician-friendly price. Small tip: One way to work around the balky touch screen could be to download the Presonus iPad app, then pair it to the console.

I have been using the studiolive 16 series 3 mixer since the end of 2017, which is pretty much the same mixer as this, except with fat channel scribble strips that this model lost. I also chose based on space available for the mixer... And yes, I started using the internal effects a ton with my various midi modules (many of which date from the mid 1990s).

I recently bought a Presonus StudioLive AR16 USB. It's an analogue mixer, and one I could afford. It's great value for money. I also like to have everything combined in one place. Before I had to constantly switch cables. Oh, and it can do multitrack recording. It also has an SD slot to record a full mix.

The jump that the motorized faders did startled me for a second. That's wayyy faster than I ever expected motorized faders to be! Granted I've never really seen them before, I just always assumed they'd be slow, or at most half the speed shown in this video. Damn!

I’ve always found flying faders extremely visually pleasing .. and almost bought one of these so I could watch those faders dance, but then I came back down to reality and bought some LED candles instead .. much cheaper. I use the Studiolive 32r myself.

I bought a Yamaha TF5 a year ago because I wanted all my synths plugged in and ready to use. It wasn't cheap but well worth it. I work so much faster now and get more use out of my outboard gear. Also I get to use the individual outs on my drum machines without lots of cable swapping, which used to kill the "moment", so to speak.

Wilderness Music I can sequence from either Cubase or MC-500. Best of both worlds. I only use virtual instruments now sparingly. Way quicker than auditioning hundreds of patches with a mouse.

@@rhill109 MC-500 very kool. I used to sequence with a Kawaii hardware piece. Can't stand presets, actually hate presets, those patches never are a perfect fit to the music. Sound design is very rewarding, though I only design on hardware. The awkwardness of sound design in soft synths makes me stressed and interferes with creation. I bought Arturia's Keylab thinking the hardware/software match would be ideal...NO :( . The control is not consistent from one synth to the other, making for another software confusing mess. And I can hunt through a 1000 of the presets and never come up with what I am looking for - even with the limited editing. I have the perfect solution to software synth control, but no one is interested.

Wilderness Music I would never say that hardware sounds better. Or that I can tell the difference in a finished track. But for me, I get so much more enjoyment from my hardware synths and drum machines that it’s worth the hassle and expense of keeping and maintaining all my old gear. My RX-11 and Drumbrute sound amazing together.

I just got a Behringer x32 compact this week. Coming from my 12 channel Mackie and basically 4 input MPCX, it makes sooooooo much difference! ...to be honest, I probably would have went that way if I could afford it. But the x32 does not disappoint. 🤘🏽 Stay classy! Ha.

Hey Bo. I moved from an Apollo x8p, x16p and Cranborne 500 ADAT setup to a StudioLive 32s in 2022. I found that the hands-on controls were much more important to me than the so-called higher end audio of the Apollos. In reality, the Presonus sounded just as good to my ears, I saved tons of money even after losing value through resale of the Apollos. I ended up getting a Radial Workhorse Powerhouse 500 series rack with 10 slots and filling it with outboard preamps. I send those into 10 of the line inputs on the Studiolive. My studio has a fully isolated tracking room with up to 16 mics and 6 phones, as well as a mostly isolated entry/vocal booth with 4 mics and 2 phones. But my main goal with the Studiolive was to have plenty of inputs for my synths. The collection has shifted since 2022, but currently I have: Roland D50, Korg DW8000, Yamaha DX7 IID and RX5, Sequential OB6, Moog Matriarch, DSI Polyevolver keyboard and Tempest, Korg SV1, Vermona DRM1 MK IV, Teenage Engineering EP-133, and my favourite synth of all time, the UDO Super Gemini. One of the great things on the Studiolive (and probably any digital mixer) is the digital patching. Because I don't use external Aux1 or 2 or Tape, I set those to be USB out from the computer. I then assign PC audio to Tape, Studio One out to Aux 2, and my click track to Aux 3. That means every channel is available for tracking. It also allows hardware control of playback volume of all those sources and independent control for heaphone mixes. It really is an amazing "audio interface". I'm planning to do a livestream next week on Studiolive questions and answers. I'll be my first livestream so we'll see how that goes.

Most of you will laugh: But I tend to record my hardware synths directly into my computer from a Behringer U-Phoria 4-in, 4 out audio interface using Bitwig Studio. I do have a USB mixer from the same company, but tend to enjoy 'mixing in the box' because of the possibilities of sample deconstruction as well as a much larger volume of effects.

my current one is dying (its a 90s allen heath) 32 channel, i looked at the 16channel version of this too but i think id miss the added flexibility so il stick with 32 version i think,64 would just be overkill that id never get the benefit from not to mention the added cost lol. As for what i record on that can vary greatly depending on what im working on and what the client wants, im a dinosaur so lets just say if someone particularly says wanted reel too reel, or DAT etc i can still do that, no wonder after 40yrs i cant move in my tiny studio for all the accumulated stuff lol :)

plus another important factor with this model being so versatile is that you dont need to use a digital interface anymore bo, so its far easier to incorporate your hardware and software together and a neater more user friendly integration which massively aids workflow (well for me anyway) :)

hi bo. i use a cerwin and vega 1224 to run all my hardware through. i assign the mixers control room out through a two way switcher into my kaos pad quad so i can effect any of my gear before it goes into my focusrite interface. i also have a boss br16 track for its superb effects and run them through my aux. i also assign the mixers main out into my switcher when i dont want to go through the kaos pad quad (maximum sound quality without quad so i use it sparingly) :)

Thanks Bo for the introduction to Presonus. I need a new solution for all hardware recording. Presently I am all hardware, no computer for synth jams, but import WAV files from the hardware recorder to DAW for pro finishing. I use a ZoomR24 and 2, four buss mixers, to mix 8 sub-mixes to my 8 inputs of the ZoomR24 for synth jams (24 track overdub for pro work). This gives me an eight track mixdown control for mastering on the Zoom to stereo finish. Since my mixers today are failing I will need to replace them or find a new solution for 24 to 32 track simultaneous recording and not use mixers before the recording hardware anymore. The Tascam 32 looks promising, but effects is a major problem, The need for a more professional 4 aux is necessary. The effects on the Presonus in your review would have to be excellent, or I would not consider it, and at least 2 aux sends and stereo returns would also be a requirement. And I would like to up the resolution too, 24 bit 96kh would be a good start and in standard WAV file for import to DAW.

I just bought a 5-channel USB mixer for my Truck as I'm starting to play synths together and I only have a 2 input A.I.. Still working on getting it to play nice with Ableton, but it hooks into my iPad and Garage band rather nicely. At least now, I can record what I play. As for the home, I'm still debating on what type of mixer I'd want or if I shout simply buy a bigger audio-interface.

Hi Bo, I really appreciate this video and the others showing your studio setup. Imo they're super useful to help who decide to setup a home studio or, as me, changing the workflow trying to find a better, faster, much more intuitive and flexible connection between all the devices. I've this mixer in my radar, but I've technical question for you, since as me, I suppose you're working mainly with line inputs, using just a few times microphones. I've seen on the tech sheet that inputs from 1 to 8 are xlr, not combo, and it's written there you should need a DI to use them as line. But I've seen in your studio setup (when you show the connections on the rear) you use xlr with coloured cables plugged. Do you use a DI as a bridge between it and the devices or it's possible to patch them using a xlr connector (balanced or not) straight from the devices? Thanks a lot. Ciao!

That is one nice mixer. I am so use to recording into Cubase Pro, I am not sure I would want to go back to a physical mixer board. #1 I don't have the space in my studio for such a large unit. I would like to know the advantages of using a mixer like this compared to using built in mixers in a DAW like Cubase? Is it just the physical touch thing?

Oh it’s great that you have reviewed this! You are right, a digital mixer with motorised faders is an overkill for most bedroom recording in the box. That said, I’m evaluating the ‘performance-to-cost ratio’ if I were to get a Presonus Faderport 16, a patchbay, and Adat i/o to expand my audio interface. Putting these considerations in place, maybe a digital mixer with motorised faders seems like a good solution to simplify my studio from clutter? What do you guys think?

When it comes to usb mixers does it matter what length of usb cable you use ie 5ft-20ft? How long is the usb cable you have connected to your usb mixer to your computer? Depending on where your mixer is placed is there any loss of quality when using a longer cable in general or technical difficulties etc? Stay creative friend 🙂

I have a Zoom Livetrak L20, it's a lot cheaper than this mixer, but has a lot of similar features, including multitrack recording to both SD card and via USB to a computer or iPad. Built-in effects and compressor, etc. The only thing missing is an external effects loop, but you can use monitor outs and input channels for that, as the monitor outs have individual mixes, so you can use the mix of a single monitor out as an external effect sends. It doesn't have motorized sliders, but it has a very nice LED display of the active position of the slider setting, so basically the same functionality than having motorized sliders, but clearly cheaper to manufacture. I have been using mine now for over half a year, both in my synth studio and also on live events, mixing and recording live performances. The Zoom has been performing well on both. A very good option for a lot of less money.

I am a ZoomR24 user, my reason for replacing it is the clock. When combining video and audio they don't sync perfectly. I have heard it was a crystal problem. Have you attempted video/audio with any sync problems....usually the timing becomes obvious after about 15 minutes of play?

I had a StudioLive 16R and I hated it. I had to jump through to many hoops to get it to work even partially. I sold it and got a Behringer X Air XR18. I love it worked as soon as I pluged everything in. I just added a Behringer X-Touch to my studio so that I have physical control over the XR18 and my DAW. I run sound at my church and recently we replaced the sound system. We decided to go big or go home. We got the StudioLive 64S with 4 stage boxes, new amps, cabinets, etc ... I like the 64S but it was a large learning curve since I come from the old analog school of mixing. I learn something new almost everytime I fire that bad boy up. However, were I to do it again I would go with the Behringer X32.

Recently switched to an Audient Id14 + ADA8200 for a total of 10 inputs. Synths go to the Behringer since they don't really benefit from the audient preamps, and mics go into the Audient. Obvious upgrade would be to get a better AD converter, but honestly I don't think I would notice a big difference. At over double the price of an X32 this thing is a tough sell though. The interface is definitely an improvement (selecting channel source with one button gave me shivers :p ), but for the price you could get an X32 + a tablet and still have a lot of money left over. Then again, you would need to buy a expension card if you want to record to SD.

Hey Bo! hope all is well man. One thing I didn't see was DAW integration. I currently use a Behringer X32 in my setup. With all the inputs going through the USB out into Ableton live 10. This allows me to use all of my Plug in's etc in my production flow. It essentially turns my mixer into a 32 channel audio interface. I then use a Raven MTI2 for "mixing" as I can control each of my 32 channels through it. Well once you've got the gains for all the channels set to where you like etc. This may not be the best setup and I welcome any feedback as this has been a setup that has evolved over the last decade through much trial and error.

Airon Perkins hi there, i would be really psyched to learn how to effectively use my nearly microscopic Soundcraft 8 mixer with ableton 10. i’ve been trying to bring my 2 out of box items INTO the fold of ableton sets, but i usually end up SEPARATING the “out of box” process of sequencing my waldorf rocket with my elektron digitakt, using a beatstep for real time note entry on both devices (digitakt is not velocity sensitive) FROM creating inside ableton. all it feels like i’m accomplishing is some slightly specialized loop-making. it’s just...a lot harder to integrate the tabletop workflow with the desktop workflow than i figured on, based on previous, albeit somewhat limited, experience. i used to use a Virus and with the proprietary Control plug-in cooperating with ableton was a BREEZE. i guess dollars to donuts, i would like to figure out how to utilize more of the mixer than just its use as an audio interface (a relatively decent one at that), or as an on -stage sub mix for playing out. if you can relate to any of that at all, man i sure am ready to test some new theories! 💡✌🏼

Love your work and thank you for all you do. Question. I am a bedroom hobbyist with a few pieces of gear and looking for advice on a mixer. Based on your videos, mixers seems like the better options vs an audio interface. The gear I have: Maschine MK3, Arturia Microfreak, Artruria Keystep 37, Roland TR6S and MC101. I was looking at the Roland MX1. The TR6S and MC101 will work via the USB inputs. I am not sure it will have enough space for the other three items at once. Based on the gear I have, can you recommend some mixers I should look into please? Thanks!

To be honest, for the first time, I was actually impressed by the Behringer Wing, but its' HUGE and also checked the MX32 series (but came out in 2013 I believe, while the Presonus Livestudio 32 in 2019). So, my question is double and quite simple: do you still use the Presonus today and if so, are you still happy with it ? :) I would definitely use the stagebox too, for exactly the same arguments.

I have a Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 interface, and until recently was using a Behringer Xenix 412 mixer for most of my recording. I record acoustic instruments and vocals as well as synths. With all the synth equipment I’ve acquired recently, I felt I was running out of room on the mixer, so I bought a Mackie ProFX 22 v2, since it was on sale. First time I tried recording an acoustic guitar, I noticed that the noise floor was entirely unacceptable. As soon as I determined that the mixer was responsible for the noise (hiss and hum), it went right back to the store. I’m now putting pretty much everything directly into the Focusrite interface, except for a couple of synths which need to go through the Behringer board. I’m surprised you didn’t say anything about the noise floor or signal to noise ratio on the Presonus, since you’ll be using it in the studio. Is noise not even an issue with this board?

I dont use an external Mixer, but im looking forward to buy one. Till now, i go straight into my Motu Soundcard with the synths or thru my xone mixer if i want to use the analog filter. The Motu can handle it and i can build simple fx aux send/return things with it. But I hate that moment when you play around with your synths, every thing has knobs and feels well, and than you have to take the mouse and look at the screen... that doesnt feels right :( thats why i want to have an mixer for my setup. One Question: How does the stagebox integration work? Do you just plug it in with the ethernet connection and the mixer will give you another page of inputs there you can jump into or is it more difficult?

20 inputs is also a limitation on the 22MTK. Use of the internal effects only works live but not recorded. TBH these aren't really much of a bother as you can add a patch bay to switch from one set of inputs to another, put your external effects direct from the synth to effects to mixer and record it that way. If you mix in the box then record into up to 20 inputs into the DAW simultaneously and then add effects plugins on the individual tracks. Personally I love my Soundcraft 22MTK. I was an artist working in a studio that had a 24 track Soundcraft board in the early 1990's so I trust the company's quality.

The audio networking on this is called Dante, and can extend to an effectively unlimited number of channels. There are also speakers and other things that use Dante extensively. Regardless, it would mainly be used for as an interface for solo/duo acoustic singer songwriters in a home studio. I am assuming it needs to be plugged-in to a power amplifier for live use? Is it overkill for recording folk- type musicians? Would the Studio Live 16.0.2 be just as good? There is only a $600 price difference. likely you dislike the touchscreen because mixers for live sound are made to be able to deal with a lot of abuse, and are designed for durability rather than a perfect user experience. in particular i'll bet that this one has a virtual "rain filter" which assumes that touches registered below a certain size or duration are actually raindrops and should be ignored, because a live sound mixer might be used for an outdoors live show and the front-of-house tent won't catch every drop, it's a useful feature. they often can't be turned off, though.

I reluctantly clicked on this video thinking "can I really hear a difference in mixers between my cheap Behringers and this Presonus"? Then you mentioned SD card recording and I became fully engaged. I stopped using computers to record 9 years ago and now use a ZoomR24. This single change to the studio increased my production and creativity 100x. The Zoom has not crashed once, needs no troubleshooting, just click record and go. I live play up to 8 synths, sequencers, and a sampler for my acoustic guitar or vocals in one multi-track take. Makes for a wonderful creative flow playing live without overdubbing. This Presonus opens up more recording possibilities by adding more tracks and instruments with one very BIG question...effects? Troubling not to see send and returns for external processors, and what is the quality of the built in effects? Can I get internal effects equal to a Eventide Space or Big Sky?
@BoBeats
@BoBeats 5 жыл бұрын
so the internal effects are not recorded onto the SD card with this mixer but if you create your own custom send using any of the outputs and input back into any pair of inputs you can record the external effects. It basically records analog inputs 1-32 + L/R so anything going into them gets recorded. I have been poking Presonus to add the internal FX returns as recordable, but I don't think this will happen as this is probably a very very niche thing. And the internal FX is nice (reverb, delay) but I suspect in a synth setup most won't use them (asked a few friends who have Presonus Series 3 and they arn't really into the fx since they have better external stuff)

@@BoBeats You can record multitrack using capture either on the mixer's sd card or the capture app on your computer. You can then open that capture project in presonus studio one (Artist version comes free with the mixer) where it will allow you to change the fat channel settings (capture records the raw audio and the settings not the processed settings) and you can then export stems or the whole mix. I am an ableton guy really but the capture workflow is really good for jamming. While presonus doesn't support sdcards > 32GB I am using a 128GB card with no issues so far. I have had a 24R for some time but I recently got a 64S to go with it and the 24R is used as a stagebox. It works really well for me. Other things that are useful are that you can record 64x64 from both AVB and USB concurrently and the channel mappings can be totally different. I also wish that the internal FX could be recorded. It seems a bit of a misstep, but the flexible routing of auxes is great for pedals or even using a DAW/Plugins as multi FX buses

One of the benefits a mixer has over an interface is that you don't need a computer running to hear your sources. I picked up a used 16 ver 3 for $1500. That is massive bargain when you compare it to the Sound Devices MixPre 6 I paid nearly a grand for. Recorded a live jazz gig and was very surprised at the high quality. Mixed it in Studio One. The Capture app is perfect for what it does. Would not trust anything important to the SD card recording. Maybe as a backup if possible? I will be investing in some of their Fat Channel plugins and their AVB stage boxes. Goodbye to stupid heavy expensive snakes!! The work flow is not the most intuitive and I have managed to lock it up on several occasions requiring a power cycle. There are some things missing: ADAT in/out would be very handy. Word clock in/out? MIDI in/out for tempo sync would be nice. Expansion slot for ADAT, AES/EBU or Dante cards. (My 20 year old Yamaha 01V96 can do all that stuff) Another thing I dream of is a rotary encoder above each fader for things like aux sends and panning. Unhappy accidents are easy when you forget to switch back to main fader mix mode.

Bo can you select more than one channel at once and edit their EQ and/or other parameters?

good question. Not gotten this deep yet but there are copy/paste commands I believe. You can also set up a sub group for channels and add eq/comp to it

@@BoBeats Interesting, I may need to dive into the manual. I've been on the hunt for a live PA mixer analog or digital that gets close to the performance abilities of a DJ mixer. The one thing I can't really find is some PA mixer that would allow you to high pass the whole mix to essentially drop the bass out.

well this one has master eq/comp/limiter where you could do stuff like that

Hi! Isn't the first 8 out 16 channels for microphones!? That is a SERIOUS waste and a dealbreaker for me. I was so into this product. I would go for this product, if they were switchable, but I guess that they aren´t!? Any workarounds or am I mistaken? I think it a weird choice for a compactmixer!? There is a lot of people out there, that don't need to record a complete drumset or a huge choir, but need 5, 10, 20 or more line-ins! Kind regards
