Well and it’s also just plain silly to keep trying for ‘ultra realistic’ graphics. Remember a few years back when ppl still bought tv’s and ultra HD 4k blah blah blah was all the rage? And then immediately everyone realized it actually sucks to watch anything in that level of HD. Stylizing game graphics to be somewhat realistic but still flow beautifully like in RD2 or Witcher 3 is where it’s at.

A lot of Finnish talent in this team and as far as I could tell by googling them at least the people working on this project seem legit and what they're doing now is consistent with their previous experience, with pretty good reviews to boot. That's a good sign if people that are hired are actually talented and passionate about their work. This is not a game in it's concept that I'm excited to play, but I think it has a lot of potential for people that are it's target audience. I don't think it's a scam. And when it comes to northern European game devs, we're a small community here and once your reputation is ruined, it will hurt a lot more than in countries with hundreds of millions of people. So far the project looks pretty good and it's exciting to see northern European talent on the team trying to achieve something ambitious. No matter if it succeeds or fails I don't think it will be for the lack of trying to actually make a great game. I think the intention is there.

I wanna see a nearly finished, nearly fully tested game be announced out of no where with just enough time to generate the hype it needs. Though nearly finished games are still no where near realistic in the modern game dev environment, the idea of something like this is way more appealing than announcing a 20% complete game everyone waits years to find out if it's good or bad. Could be mistaken but I don't think anything like that has been done before, would be interesting to see how successful an idea like that could potentially be.

@@TheRealBillix A lot of AA-tier games do this all the time. Something relatively simple and visually appealing that isn't too graphically demanding or large-scale in dev budget, so they can sneak it out and have it become a sleeper hit. But you're right that we don't see this with MMOs, because they're structured different and they need waaaaay more testing, so usually we get the hype train started with those about a couple of years in advance, leading up to an alpha test, an open beta, and then finally live (also they need to populate the worlds so during live the game actually feels like a living breathing universe, even though a year or two later it will be a ghost town in most cases).

It's just smart to have a closed beta with players testing it for an MMO. They're free, they have a variety of hardware configurations and an ability to stress test a server, and they'll try to find exploits and abuse the in-game economy and level up systems.

Not that I expect people to but it’s clear a lot of people haven’t seen that UE5 demo where they show off their mesh tech or whatever. The reason you would need a 4090 to run this if it was created in anything other than UE5 is because of the millions upon millions of polygons. With UE5’s dynamic mesh thing (idk what it’s called (nvm I looked it up and it’s called nanite)), you can get extremely good looking stuff like this without an insane amount of performance required. I mean that’s why there’s so much hype around UE5… if it was just really good graphics but you need a 4090 to get 5 fps nobody would really care about UE5 at all

When this is officially launched I am fairly certain that the 4090 barrier will be right there in that "average affordable zone" for most people. By then I'm sure a lot of PC gamers will be rocking 5090s or whatever comes after for those wealthy kats dropping 2k on a video card. This thing feels years off.

It's like a new MMO is announced every week and so many of them look like they're meant to be this amazing new thing that generate so much hype.. only to crash and burn for various reasons. I wish devs would chill in their attempts to be the next big thing and instead focus on making an engaging game with great story and combat because let's face it: There's a few established MMOs out there and people will need a lot more than "omg look at the graphics" to make the switch.
@billywashere6965

Absolutely agreed. I loved Tera and Black Desert for their graphics and combat, which at least separated them from the horde. But it seems like every other new MMO coming out is either a generic TPS looter-shooter or a generic medieval-fantasy grindfest. Now this isn't to rant against looter-shooters or grindfests, some of my favourite games include Borderlands 1 & 2 and MMOs like Dark Eden. But at the same time, newer games need to leverage more than just graphics and dated loops to be appealing, otherwise I can just stick with the old, tried, and true MMOs from the past.

Lineage 2 was amazing for player-driven drama. There were no factions, no "feature" that told you who your friends and enemies were, there was just politics and power plays for castles. I remember calls to arms where many small alliances/clans would sign up to help an underdog dethrone the massive evil alliance that owned most of the server (InnerCircle).

18:12 I think one way that would connect more experienced players with new players is a apprenticeship system. Specially in the time period this mmo is set, it was a common thing for masters to take in apprentices and it was one of the only ways to have a profession. 26:30 i just googled, pax dei is latin for piece of god. It was the name of a medieval church movement. Although I’m not sure if the name of the game is referring to that.

I have little hope in most games being good these days. Good graphics are nice, but I hope we don't get to a point where every dev feels the need to make realistic looking games. I don't really play WoW, but at least it had it's own sort of style.
@billywashere6965
@billywashere6965 Жыл бұрын
That's the problem when you have a design platform that sort of throws a lot of cool features in your lap. You see a lot of "me too" style games appearing from a lot of studios. It's nice that Unity and UE5 offer a lot of ready made assets from the user marketplace, but I also see so many of these games coming out looking like asset flips. It's kind of a major turnoff when you boot up a game and can recognize some of the assets from the aseet store. It cheapens the experience (for me anyway). I understand for small teams they don't want to spend the resources/budget redesigning an art-style from scratch, but when every upcoming UE5 game is making use of material layers, material shaders, and a lot of built-in IK and lighting systems, you start seeing some games and it begins to feel like deja vu.

I think what we are seeing right now is that its arbitrary to generate incredible graphics and assets / gameworld. Even just starting with unreal engine and a bunch of high quality models, you are already blowing every previous game out of the water graphically, and in the potential scale of the world. So I think we need to stop valuing graphics as much. If graphical fidelity was a currency, its rapidly being devalued to the point of being worthless. The hard part, is making the systems of gameplay compelling- which most of these struggle with- or to add depth in your interaction with that world, like you are talking about... That could be a space I hope that AI can be truly disruptive.

These trailers are always set in small environments or sections of game build where it can run at full capacity but when the game comes out, it runs nowhere near these settings because it's loading the rest of the map around it. LOL no... it's not a strong foundation for big MMOs. It has MAJOR entity caps, big problems with procgen environmental height maps, and frequent crashes when you pair Lumen with certain design infrastructures. It's literally one of the worst choices for a big open-world MMO, even though with 5.1 they added 64-bit floating point precision. They need a complete networking overhaul and to gut a lot of the needless bloat in the engine to optimize it for a large scale MMO, it's precisely why there are ZERO large-scale MMOs made in Unreal Engine.

@@dhafalriblain3494 as the dude above said there are huge problems with using ue5, there are many more he did nto talk about, as such cool stuff they added in that you brought up, you will see these mmos crash and burn so quick because such complex open world games need engine fine tuning on the devs end, and guess what? they dont have that control, epic does, its the massive con you come into when dealing with someone elses engine, you find an issue you cannot fix or get around on your end, it would take epic to fix it and with how many people using the engine and also coming into a shit ton of issues, depending on the problem it can take a year to 10 years to be fixed, eg a shader/assest stuttering issue that has been present in UE for 10+ years has only been fixed with ue5.1, there is a reason big studios use their own in house engine as if they come into a problem and they can fix it (the fix can also fuck other things btw) they can do this fast and efficently while also getting round any other problems that can pop up and can also change small design choices quickly due to the control they have and if something did not work or not.

@@dhafalriblain3494 Online play =/= MMO. A lot of games use Unreal Engine for online lobbies and basic network play, but there are no massive online games with thousands of players in the same instance running on Unreal because it can't handle that. Most MMOs using Unreal use a lot of instanced lobbies to separate players by region, session, etc. Ashes of Creation is using Unreal Engine 5, but they, too, have to gut it and expand it to get it to do what they need, which is why it's taking so long, because overhauling an engine is not easy, and you need bespoke networking solutions that hook into the core engine tech to optimize it and make it work. That's what CIG had to do with the CryEngine 3 (so much so, they now call it the Star Engine). When it comes to performance it seems to be different than other MMO's as its first "cloud-native MMO", looks like cloud gaming is becoming more common in upcoming years as even Ubisoft is planning to take that route and that new Finals game seems to use similar tech for their destructible environment. I wonder if you need things like 5G internet to get best performance out of these cloud games tho.

It's not, it makes perfect sense, given its primary and secondary meanings, and I provided the phonetics. Also, how letters are produced in Latin are totally different even while represented by the same alphabetical characters, so what you said doesn't make sense in context.

There's going to have to be some building limit. look at a game like Ark which is a massive game with large individual maps that can get insanely laggy with only 100 daily active players building, and this is twofold what the server can handle and what the player experiences going near such lag fests.

New Worlds originally had many player interaction. Player interaction of selling orbs and other time gate's such as transportation of crafting goods was removed or heavily nerfed because players did not see interacting with others to bypass time gates as convenient but rather inconvenient and annoying. So they removed the inconvenience and annoyances so players no longer had to interact with other players because they found it inconvenient and annoying. You have 1 person who enjoys doing menial tasks and can then sell to 10 who don't like menial tasks. 10 players who not only do not want to do menial task they do not want to interreact with the player who does . These 10 players complain and devs listen the majority get their way over the minority. Meaningful player interactions removed. Player interactions can not be meaningful because the majority of players do not seem to want that. The interactions must be unmeaningful so you do not alienate the players who do not want to interact with other players. This was my observation in the New World Forums.
