Well, from what I understand - without any research, mostly what people talk about on the steam 'forums' - they (System Era) are a small-ish team. I don't think they spend time checking if the servers are past-date to delete them; most likely they have an algorithm auto-checking and errasing the server memory for someone else to use. Although, I see your point. Their system is badly done and could get some tweaks to save servers for a longer time for when the same customers want to reconnect their previous server.

My strategy for starting a new save is: -land -put a research chamber on a A platform, the ones tha Z1 loves so much -set up a smelter -gather enough bytes to buy the medium solar -do the rest

I use Large Platform As for Research Cambers. On my current save, I have 16 Large Platform As with 16 Research Cambers all connected together in a 4x4 sqaure. I now use Medium Platform As as main power runs

you can up your server easily, even when you do not have an external IP. just use hamachi and write in config your hamachi address so you and friends(using same hamachi group) can connect to your server. and you will have full controls of your saves and backups and runtime

ah, also, when you start a new game, do not start it on blank dedicated save, better take blank save from solo playing(yes, on first login you will create and play a new char), because blank dedicated not have achievements if I understand it correct of course, but when dedicated run on saving from solo game it have everything
