MV Agusta have just released their new Lucky Explorer 5.5 with references to the Cagiva Elefant. Will it really be ADV dirt-worthy? Is this another wonderful addition to the mid-sized ADV segment along with the Tenere and Tuareg 660, or another sheep in wolf's clothing? Will the Lucky Explorer 5.5 do justice to the original Cagiva Elefant? How will it compare with the current crop of bikes from Honda, Suzuki, Aprilia, KTM, Husqvarna and Yamaha?

You’re right : an elephant weight for an adventure bike is a big heavy turn off! But, they are beautiful!

5.5 needs to be around the same weight as a dr650 or a ducati scrambler 400/803. Bearing in mind the new scrambler is 4 kg lighter than the old one. They need to get the wet weight down below 200 kg otherwise a waste of time. It's in the lite middleweight class so needs to be under 200 kg. For that you need a descent trellis frame & alloy swing arm as well as a lite weight tank.

I really don't care about the weight of that 5.5 i know i can handle that, that would mean a more stable bike and u wont feel that weight when riding. Atleast MV tried to give us a premium sub 600cc adv with acceptable(not bad specs) in a much lower price. ❤️ You see, most of top Motorcycle companies now are focusing on higher cc with high specs and comes with higher price that most people can't afford. Atleast MV veered away from that. And that's all what matters to me. ✌️✌️✌️ I really hope its just within the price range of Benelli's 502X and CB500X. 🤞

Like you I am very confused: MV Agusta is known and respected for producing very high-quality, very beautiful and very expensive road and racing motorcycles. So why are they now trying to sell low- or medium-quality, not-that-exciting-looking, ADV bikes for relatively cheap? They will sell a few bikes, sure, as some buyers will like the MV Agusta badge. But the badge is its only selling point and it is a very crowded market so people with money will go for the DesertX, Norden or a KTM, and the rest will get a Transalp, V-strom, Tuareg or T7. Very strange indeed.

Agree: it seems to be totally counterintuitive to the brand. Someone has some strange marketing ideas at MV.

​@@BlueMarbleRider Guys you do not get it. It is not MV anymore ;-) It is now KTM and they will not allow anything to compete with their premium line of adventure bikes directly KTM. But they want more market share for such and so they will offer cheaper and heavier alternative thx to their chinese partner. There is only one king in this arena from this year on and that is Kove 450 Rally

@@puffybodie5282 I think we understand what KTM/MV are doing, just not why. MV is a premium road and racing brand: why diminish the value of the marque by associating the brand with ADV budget bikes? Much better to use "Sherco" or "Gas Gas".

@@BlueMarbleRider MV WAS premium. Now it will be used to sell fake Rolex as a lot of people will think that they are buying something premium. Same as those "limited" series from KTM directly under Brambus name. Why to make real quality of some luxury brand when you can sell way more fakes under the same name and make more money. Typical modern CEO thinking, same with eg. H&D. Based on amount of units sold by KTM and its other brands you can see that people are falling for that trick so easily

Check out their website: MV are a premium brand: look at the enormous prices of the gorgeous Brutale, superveloce etc. Selling a budget chinese bike as an MV Agusta will work for a very short time before backfiring and negatively impacting the sales of all models: this is not a strategy that will pay dividends for the owners of MV Agusta. Very few people will realistically buy a Chinese made Rolex for peanuts and genuinely expect a Rolex...

As we keep saying it for decades, the ADV segment is basically en 450/800 engine with curb weight of less of 180kg. A perfect bike is a 450 Enduro Rally. I keep not understanding why these manufacturers spend dozen of millions on their so called design and R&D and end up with the same very same design of their ADV bikes, that are not ADV at all. You take any non fullbody bike and you can go to the same ADV place these bike go. The front wheel is always too small for real completely messed roads, the front fender is anything you want if there is mud to be stuck in there, the weight is very high. Even KTM is getting on the heavy side, but the 890 is still really offroad ready because they are 21/18 and can go on open road and fast. Still you never see their promotion video when its muddy...wonder front fender why /(>o< ") Really we need such a bike, actually the COLOVE 450 looks ok, but the power is not there for a 450, what they claim is clearly not the fact, because even though they spend a lot on ads, they never show us a DynoChart of the HP/Nm so, basically they are not confident. Let see how the things get unfold...

Agree: most of what is churned out is too heavy, over powered and under sprung. But, we are at least getting closer now. Hopefully a 450 from Yam, KTM/Husq and Aprilia would be nice.

MY Agusta adventure bike? Really!? Weight notwithstanding that is a contradiction in terms. Who is going to go around the world on one given no dealer network and so few bikes out there for scrap parts? These bikes are the motorcycle equivalent of Range Rovers and G Wagons; they will be status symbols driven on asphalt in big cities. In my opinion a KLR 650 would be more practical.
