3:50 The Nest Thermostat E works with temperature sensors 👍 And I know you didn't really mention it because of it not being available to the public but it kinda still is. They still have loads for sale at walmart and even at cheaper prices on ebay. I got mine for about $118 and I love it I don't know why they're discontinuing the Nest E. It works great and is a good mix between premium and budget.
@robfall21593 жыл бұрын
As a certified HVAC tech; anything but nest. If you get a good one okay great, personally i love the design and interface. However, about 50% of the Nest thermostats we have installed have needed replacing within the first year. 1/10 are defective straight out of the box. Nothing is 100% I know, but my company highly reccomends away from nest due to all of the problems weve had with them. Significantly less out of ecobee or honeywell smart thermostats.
@jasondecourcy96113 жыл бұрын
Have you noticed with the Nest the temperature allowances vary by 3-4 degrees C? This means that if you set it to 20 degrees it might not kick in till it hits 17 or 16 degrees. Nest says this is by design and don't consider it a problem. I am swapping it out or an Ecobee as 4 degrees is the difference between comfortable and cold. Be interesting to see if you have noticed that on your units?

@brianrice11963 жыл бұрын
There is a critical difference between the 3rd Gen Nest and the $129 Google Nest. If you have a multi stage heating/cooling system, the $129 Nest will not accommodate the 2nd stage cooling (y2) or 2nd heat (W2) functions of the system. This is especially critical to consider if you have a heat pump system with auxiliary heat or a hybrid system.

Removing heat costs a lot more energy than adding heat. Allowing your thermostat to swing multiple degrees so that it “runs less” will cost you more in electricity. Having it maintain 76 degrees will not only keep your house at the temperature you like it to be, but allows the condenser to only have to cycle on to maintain temperature for short periods of time. Instead of turning on, removing an accumulated 2 degrees from your house, shutting down, and allowing the heat to build up again

Hmm. I live in AZ. I have ecobee lite. My biggest gripe is this. We are on a time of use plan for our electric with APS. The hours between 3pm and 8pm are the most expensive. Through the App, my AC was running an average of 50 minutes during that time. I precool till 3 o'clock and I get the house to about 76 degrees. At 3, the app is set to 82 degrees. It will take until about 5:30 before the house gets to 82. Then it cycles until 8pm when I have it set for 78 again. I would rather run it for 10 minutes at the top of each hour. The app for the lite at least has no timer settings just temperature. You can also not set the temp for part of the hour. but rather for that whole hour. My hypothesis is that it would stay around 80 in the house if I could run it for 10 minutes at the top of the hour, and then just repeat that during the peak time periods from APS. Keeping it cool, rather than cooling it after it gets to 82. Having it this summer though has saved me over 100 bucks every month of the summer. My august bill was $137 less than the same month last year. Having a timer option that would do portions of the hour would make the ecobee the best unit ever!
@SmartHomeSolver3 жыл бұрын
I wonder if you could use something like SmartThings or even a voice assistant routine to run the A/C for ten minutes during peak pricing as a schedule. Then turn it back off or up real high. I save a lot using the peak pricing as well. Pays for the thermostat so fast.

That backplate is as goofy as anything I've seen, and from what I've read, you have to pay $15 extra for it, too. Our power company is giving away your choice of Nest Thermostat E or Ecobee 3 Lite, if you qualify (that is, if your wiring is right for them). I spent hours trying to figure it out, then realized that Google's attempts at cleverness are completely clueless. Those units have the same list price, but they really aren't at all equal.

20+ year industrial HVAC mechanic here (I've also done residential in case anyone cares to challenge my creditails) with some advice. Don't buy a "smart" Thermostat. HVAC equipment has a very specific purpose and function that these little toys fail to live up to. I'll explain why. Function - A thermostat is a very simple device that is supposed to turn on your furnace when it's cold and turn on AC when it's hot to supply a constant temperature in your home. That's all it's for. A smart stat doesn't do this effectively. They cycle off when you don't want them to, they don't give you a constant temperature because of "eco" modes. So they fail at the first and most important criteria for a thermostat. Reliability - If a thermostat fails your home you can experience calling your insurance company levels of damage so reliability is extremely important. I've seen pipes freeze and burst in homes simply because the thermostat failed and no one was home to notice. In every thermostat there are relays that need to open and close hundreds of thousands of times during the life span of a stat. These "smart" stats have cheap relays which can and do easily fail. Equipment compatibility - Typical thermostats are designed to have multiple compatibility options which your installer (if he knows what he's doing) will setup. These range from anything such as single/multistage applications all the way to short cycling options for various AC systems. Smart stats do not have these options in mind, sure they might have certain things that convince you is packed with options but not the actual ones you need. Also power stealing on thermostats can actually damage your heating equipment by running to much current through loads on the circuit board that they aren't supposed to get. Cost - A typical digital thermostat cost around $100 (Canadian, that's where I live) but a smart stat cost 3 times that much. Fun - Well we've finally got to the part where "smart" stats rule. They are way more fun then a regular thermostat but is that really important? In my opioion no. How much fun do you really need from a thermostat? Are you going to sit around one day bored out of your mind and decide to go over to your thermostat and start playing with it? If so I would recommend getting a hobby. Is thete really nothing else you'd rather do with your time? Read a book, learn to play chess, start a fight club in your basement but anything has got to be better then playing with your thermostat. So I'm sure many of you will say "screw that guy he doesn't know what he's talking about". But after you've ignored my advice and put one of these in your house just think of me ignoring my $100 Honeywell thermostat playing with my kids while your paying hundreds of dollars to a guy like me while he's trying to figure out why your house is too cold. But hey at least you'll know the temperature of your living room when your at work, if you can figure out how to connect it to your phone.

Do you have C-wires attached to your Nest 3rd Gen thermostats? Mine keep disconnecting from my internet and says low battery. Google says that there is nothing wrong with the thermostat and I have had to schedule a pro to come out to troubleshoot. I also live in AZ.

I am not from USA but that's a bit interesting for me. Are you heating/cooling apartment with air-conditioning or what? How is it possible from one thermostat/device?

The google app sucks!! This new nest sucks. It doesn’t connect to 5G internet. The temperature presets are horrible to work with. I would not recommend this device.

Ecobee is buggy garbage and customer service is top 3 worst I've ever dealt with. I'd steer clear. Even with a few more features it's such a headache to use and have work properly it's just not worth it.

No clue if this will be seen but I was thinking about getting a smart thermostat for a long-term rental house I'm in because my electric bill gets so high (I also live in AZ and the weather just kills bill) I've never actually used one before. How easy are they to install and uninstall and would it be practical to uninstall the rental thermostat and install a smart one that if I move out uninstall the smart one and reinstall the old one?

Do people really keep their ac at 77 and 78 degrees??? I keep my shit at 70 during the day and 65 at night. I would die if my house was at 78 during the day

I have an odd situation. My dog has developed severe anxiety over the relay click on our thermostat. I am looking for a thermostat that has the quietest click or no relay click at all. Any recommendations? I don't care if it is smart or not

Ecobee does not work directly with Alexa as you have to say “Alexa ask ecobee to set the temperature to…”. Honeywell is a great alternative and works directly with Alexa.

How come scheduling don’t have a OFF option? I want my ac to run from 12pm to 8pm only and shut OFF till the next day. Why is that not a option?

I’m setting 2 of these up in my goggle Home configured home. One setup to Goggle home fine. Second is searching for internet as you described. I did as you said and had it installed by configuring it in a second home. This makes it useless as it now shows in a different home then it is in. How do I move it now from the second home software wise into the actual location?

Wait, if you buy 3 of the sensors the ben3 will only take readings from one of them and not all 3? Shit. I thought it learned the average from all 3 ?
