I bought this foundation in Calico yesterday so very pleased to see you testing it out. The No 7 representative at Boots picked it as best shade for my skin tone (fair with yellowish undertones). It does not cover as well with a single application as L’Oréal True Match foundation, which I have used previously, so I had to apply again over my cheeks and other reddish problem areas. It does dry a little warmer than when first applied, as I felt at first that it was on the cool side for my warm/neutral? (confused)) skin. This is only the first day of wearing and it appears to have worn better than the L’Oreal. A friend who called round said my skin looked lovely in it, softer, she said, than with the L’Oreal. So maybe the colour is a better match. I mix 2 colours in the L’Oreal anyway (porcelain and 2n Vanilla, both of which are neutral, though the vanilla leans towards warm) and vary the blend depending on the time of year. I am 69 by the way and prefer a light glow to foundation as have found the matte can look cakey. You are no age at all compared to me, but don’t we all feel we are ageing once past the age of 30 or even earlier I seem to remember. My next try out is going to be a good mineral powder foundation. I wonder if you have tried any and could do a video? Thanks for a very informative and well made video.

I am not a cosmetic chemist, but I believe that retinyl palmitate in cosmetics is used as an antioxidant. As with most things, formulation matters and it shouldn't have the same effect when formulated into a foundation and also not cause irritation. I think I have seen a few cosmetic chemist discuss this before!

Is it likely even this version and lower concentration of retinol could dry or otherwise irritate sensitive skin? I'm staying cautious but am interested to hear what you think x

I use No7 pore minimizing primer and I mix one pump of this foundation with a bit No7 Lift and Luminate foundation. I apply with a sponge and have just discovered the matifying sponge by Real Techniques and it does a wonderful job. I top it with The Balm Sexy Mama pressed powder. Retinyl palmitate is also in their Hydraluminous foundation so this isn't a first for No 7 foundations. Not sure though what purpose it serves in a foundation that sits on top of skincare and spf. I have rosacea and my skin cannot tolerate any form of retinol but I have always been fine with the Hydraluminous foundation having retinyl palmitate in it. Think I will pick this one up as it looks like a lovely finish 😀
@SP-lm1pk2 жыл бұрын
I saw somewhere on another review of something with retinal palmitate that it is just used as an emulsifier and is not really considered a retinol.

I think that the retinoid in such a small amount is used as a preservative. I’m pretty sure, I heard that from Dr. Dray before. So you should be fine 🙂

I definitely agree with you on the retinol. I also use tretanoin in my dermatica and would not want to mess with that! I am really struggling with the flakyness of my skin because of the dermatica too so very sad to hear this picked up on the dryness, I loved the hydroluminous foundation from no7 but unfortunately my skin is now so pale from factor 50 that I can't wear even the lightest shade anymore! Love your reviews and your channel x

A few of No 7 foundations have Retinyl Plamitate in the ingredients including the lovely Hydraluminous Foundation. Its low down on the inci list. Haven't seen the ingredient list for this restore and renew to see if its higher up.

You’re so right. When we initially reviewed the hydraluminous (which I still love but don’t wear) the retinyl palmitate wasn’t an issue as I wasn’t on tretinoin, or at least not on a high strength tretinoin. Thank you for pointing this out as I overlooked it whilst filming. This is a great point to make. Xxx
@lorainemcgillivray772 жыл бұрын
Hi Gemma I don't think there will be enough of the retinyl palmitate to be anything other than an antioxidant or preservative in the formulation tbh, however you know how sensitive your skin is and if you believe it will be an issue for you then that's fine. My take on it is that any foundation ingredients have to get through the primer, spf and all the other layers of skincare to get near my actual skin. I really do have hypersensitive skin (with both rosacea and eczema) and have to be so cautious with skincare, but makeup is far far less problematic for me tbh. A small amount of alcohol in foundation doesn't seem to be an issue for me, but a heavy alcohol presence can feel drying on my already very dry skin. I can even tolerate a little fragrance in makeup, whereas not at all in my skincare itself. Neither the alcohol nor the retinyl palmitate would put me off trying it, but the shade selection is the main issue I have with them - they don't have anything even near my skintone (they're either too dark or too yellow). It's such a shame as they're so accessible here in the UK and often have their products on offer. Best wishes.

Gemma, in your opinion, should there be a warning with this product about usage in conjunction with retinol treatments? I feel there should be, especially if you are planning on using only this one foundation and are applying it most days. Surely that can't be ideal for the skin 😕 but they say nothing about that online.

Personally, I don't want a retinoid in ANY daytime product, furthermore, I'd need a spf of 50 - not 30! Of course, I wear my own 50 spf, but not everyone does (especially the young uns 😉). If used everyday, over a long period of time, could this be detrimental to the skin? I think, over time, this could make my already dry skin, super dry. Not happy with this one and I'm surprised at Boots, I generally like their No.7 skincare! Thank you for reviewing this foundation, I was thinking about getting it but I had no idea of the ingredient list. Welcome back Gemma, I hope you all has a fabulous time. Love you so much 💗🤍💗🤍💗🤍💗

I found out the 3rd ingredient in "Make up Forever's latest foundation is ALCOHOL.. Not one of the "good" alcohols, but pure ALCOHOL! I was so curious about that foundation, but after listening to another reviewer on KZbin called "The Hooded lid" I decided not to try it due to the damage it can cause to dehydrated skin. It looked so beautiful on so many people, and many of the "testers" from other channels who have oily skin; they all said they couldn't believe how it held up and prevented their skin from being oily after a couple hours. Now it is clear why! Anyway, though all the ladies should know to consider this when trying the MUFE's latest reformulation.✌️❤️
