"Bizarre Love Triangle" is a song by the English rock band New Order, released as a single in 1986 from their fourth studio album, Brotherhood (1986), which reached the top five on the US Hot Dance Music/Club Play Singles chart, and No. 5 on the Australian ARIA Charts (No. 1 on the Victoria state chart) in March 1987.
Lyrics
What does this ship bring to me
Far across the restless sea
Waiting for the sirens' call
I've never seen it here before
There she plies a lonely trade
Cutting through the breaking waves
Drifting slowly from her course
She is lost forever more
We all want some kind of love
But sometimes it's not enough
To the wall and through the door
With a stranger on the shore
I won't desert you
I don't know what to say
I really hurt you
I nearly gave it all away
I've got it all wrong
Cause you were not the wrong one
And I don't know where to turn when you're gone
When you're gone
Gotta catch the midnight train
First to Paris then to Spain
Travel with a document
All across the continent
City life is flying by
The wheels are turning all the while
Get on board we can't be late
Our destination cannot wait
All the stars and all the worlds
Filling up this universe
Could never be as close as us
Will never shine as bright on us
I won't desert you
I don't know what to say
I really hurt you
I nearly gave it all away
I've got it all wrong
Cause you were not the wrong one
And I don't know where to turn when you're gone
When you're gone
I won't desert you
I don't know what to say
I really hurt you
I nearly gave it all away
I've got it all wrong
Cause you were not the wrong one
And I don't know where to turn when you're gone
How many times must I lose my way, hey
How many words do I have to say, hey
What can I do just to make you see
That you're so good for a man like
A man like me

Have you ever heard this soundcheck by the band in late December, 1985 (12 days before my 12th birthday!) , perchance? Although this always has, & always will be my favourite song (esp' the Ship Pettibone mix from 'Substance', as well as Richard X's awesome later mix), I LOVE the different lyrics & often wish that they'd at least retained some of them...anyway, cheers & best wishes from sunny 'Down Under', my friend...take care out there...Matt. kzbin.info/www/bejne/h4uQYWZ6ZdmXrNU

My grandmother was dying of lung cancer and in her final days my father and I brought her home from the hospital so she could die peacefully in her own home. On the car ride back from the hospital she told me to turn on the radio so that she could "hear music one last time", and this song came on the radio. She would die later that evening, some songs are just more important than words man

Definitely one of the cleverest songs ever written. It breaks with nearly every classic convention of pop music. The different audio tracks at first glance seem to have almost nothing to with each other. Voice, rhythm, synth all playing along seemingly independent of each other. But the end product is a timeless pop song. It's crazy. Absolutely crazy. Pure genius and one-of-its-kind.

I think the reason is there was so many different artists and so much music and genres in that period. It just somehow got skipped over or pushed to the side, no room left in the rotation. Which isn’t a bad thing necessarily, people just had to dig a little harder to find. Now it’s all same 3 types of garbage music everywhere.

Lyrics: Every time I think of you I feel shot right through with a bolt of blue It's no problem of mine, but it's a problem I find Livin' a life that I can't leave behind There's no sense in telling me The wisdom of the fool won't set you free But that's the way that it goes and it's what nobody knows Well, every day my confusion grows Every time I see you falling I get down on my knees and pray I'm waiting for that final moment You say the words that I can't say I feel fine and I feel good I'm feeling like I never should Whenever I get this way, I just don't know what to say Why can't we be ourselves like we were yesterday? I'm not sure what this could mean I don't think you're what you seem I do admit to myself that if I hurt someone else Then I'll never see just what we're meant to be Every time I see you falling I get down on my knees and pray I'm waiting for that final moment You say the words that I can't say Every time I see you falling I get down on my knees and pray I'm waiting for that final moment You say the words that I can't say Every time I see you falling I get down on my knees and pray I'm waiting for that final moment You say the words that I can't say

I wouldn't say for no reason. The lyrics and guitar (particularly the outro) are very melancholic even though most the instrumentals are upbeat, that's why. Listen to any bittersweet song and there is a high chance they use the same kind of juxtaposition. It's very prevalent in 80s dance music.

It's not that obvious now, but back when this came out, it was one of the first music videos to use digital editing in that way. At the time, there was nothing like this, not just musically, but also visually. We mostly saw music videos the same way, on a little television set, usually less than 17 inches or so, maybe in color, usually broadcast from a little UHF station, because the networks would never, ever play this, though MTV did. None of us had internet, we had the music when we could get it, and we had those nightclubs. This song was like a window into an unimaginable world, one that stood for so much more than the heavy metal and classic rock of the day. It was music of acceptance, kind of music of the future that we saw in front of us. But often it was just these little videos that we saw, especially if we were too young for the clubs. And this song with this video was the most important one of all. The song and the video feed off of each other, and the images that Longo chose, like that little girl running with the doll, or his iconic businessman walking, they burned into our memories in a way that regular music videos couldn't, he was (and is) an artist that has done something nonderivative, something unignorable, even as he humbly claimed that he just copied what he loved. I think that even in another hundred years, people will see this video and wonder how NO and Longo could had possibly rewritten the rules of artistic engagement as they did here. It amazes me now, but I had met Longo at Hunter College about 30 years ago, I didn't know at the time that he was the vision behind this.

Alternative bands had THE best music videos bar none. I remember most mainstream groups had just concert footage, or just them lip syncing, and/or movie scenes from whatever film they provided part of the soundtrack for spliced in. Lame. Music videos should add another dimension to songs IMHO.

Just put my 8 month old to sleep, singing this to him in a deep low voice. I was in 7th grade when this came out. What a time to be alive when this music emerged. We were so lucky. Our children will never know the feeling of such innocence, while having the perfect amount of technology to make it phenomenal. Hopefully the world will learn to back away from social media as an outlet and get back to more personal experiences.

Cool....a good song makes a good lullaby. I sang lots of untraditional lullabies to mine🙂🌌, including (The Cure) I Will Always Love You.

Underrated gem from the 80s. I'm a 90s kid, the magic I find is one decade earlier.

Same here. I was born in 89, grew up in the 90s and 2000s but there’s a hold the 80s has on me. It’s so amazing, the music, the movies, the style, all of it. I wish I lived through it.

Lots of respect to you! I never really fully appreciated the edgy grunge 90s compared to what came before! To be fair there is music quality all around us, but I feel like the good old days will be hard to replicate, especially since, food for thought for a fellow music lover, Led Zeppelin used to highlight pop stations :(

That’s what classical composers do. Each sections is playing their own sub songs / parts that are beautiful on their own yet layered together form something else entirely.

As a metal head, I approve this song because I grew up in the 80's. Would be cool if a metal band covered it.
