Have you ever heard this soundcheck by the band in late December, 1985 (12 days before my 12th birthday!) , perchance? Although this always has, & always will be my favourite song (esp' the Ship Pettibone mix from 'Substance', as well as Richard X's awesome later mix), I LOVE the different lyrics & often wish that they'd at least retained some of them...anyway, cheers & best wishes from sunny 'Down Under', my friend...take care out there...Matt. kzbin.info/www/bejne/h4uQYWZ6ZdmXrNU

Honestly, this comment got in my head. It does hit hard. Longing for youth and all that. But I also remember that I was an alcoholic grad student with undiagnosed bipolar, an inability to be alone despite a need to live alone, a hoarder, & an absolute high functioning disaster. I can breathe now & am learning to appreciate that memories of youth are delightful, all sunshine & music & epic moments, but the reality was much less jazzy & id rather be the me I am today… We are beautiful in so many ways when we are new & fresh but terrible at being us. Now we are tarnished & cynical & less shiny but we are so much better at being the self that we are meant to be (ie maslow’s stage of self actualization for the science-minded).

Definitely one of the cleverest songs ever written. It breaks with nearly every classic convention of pop music. The different audio tracks at first glance seem to have almost nothing to with each other. Voice, rhythm, synth all playing along seemingly independent of each other. But the end product is a timeless pop song. It's crazy. Absolutely crazy. Pure genius and one-of-its-kind.

I wouldn't say for no reason. The lyrics and guitar (particularly the outro) are very melancholic even though most the instrumentals are upbeat, that's why. Listen to any bittersweet song and there is a high chance they use the same kind of juxtaposition. It's very prevalent in 80s dance music.

That is good! It reminds me of getting my barback to cover my bar for 3 minutes. So I could run back into the walk in to do a big fat line. I was a bartender in 2 of the best bars on the planet during the 80s. I haven't touched that shit since 1990.

I wish they use a lot of keyboards in modern music but still not as much as the 80’s. They used them a lot and really well too, the songs from the 80’s also have bttr lyrics with stories or love

On the car ride back from the hospital she told me to turn on the radio so that she could "hear music one last time", and this song came on the radio. She would die later that evening, some songs are just more important than words man
