I'm driving a rundown late 70's tan colored Dodge Dart back to college after working the weekend as a bartender. It's late March 1985 and unseasonably warm in New England. The sun is setting, I'm traveling West and the windows are wide open and this song comes on. It is instantly tattooed on my brain. I buy the cassette (yes pre-CD, DVD, Spotify) during next week and literally wear it out over the next several years, repeatedly driving to and from school, playing this song and the whole cassette over and over. I purchase another copy of the cassette. Music is time travel and my time was the 80's...every time I hear this song, it brings me back to that exact moment....sublime.

Let me sum up the 80’s music this way, I’m a black guy who grew up in that era and I can’t cap, there was some great 80s rock and soft pop songs that I used to rock all the time. Tears for Fears was one of my favorite as well as Journey. I can remember cruising down Crenshaw Blvd in my 240z blasting their songs on the radio. That’s how much I loved 80’s music. Howard Jones, Madonna, Expose, etc…I could go on and on. But i can’t help waxing nostalgic when listening to these classics. I mean just the best cruising music ever. That’s what made driving so fun back then. It didn’t matter where you were going. Just pop in your favorite cassette and enjoy the ride. I’m glad I got to experience it firsthand.

“Welcome to your life, there’s no turning back...” is the opening line of this pop masterpiece, a profound lyric. A song that makes me self-reflect. Once you’re here, you’re stuck with the life you’re given. So accept your fate. This is the message I got out of the song. We all live our lives in competition, competing with one another on who can be more dominant, more powerful, not realizing that power comes with grave responsibilities, and that people in power can lead lives of misery as they are subject to hate, envy, and scrutiny. Despite those truths, everybody still wants to rule the world. We never learn.

This took me back to me being nine years old, walking a mile to school with my cousin and his friends, stopping by a convenience store to buy Now and Laters on the way, and actually learning in school…free from SOLs and censorship. Then come home, do my homework, go outside, and play in the ply ground, room through the words, and live in a world of innocence and imagination until it got dark. Dinner was ready when you walked through the door, my mom and I are dinner together at the table, and then watch some tv shows or a movie. The news came on at 10 (or 11 depending on the channel), and then the National Anthem played with patriotic landmarks and figures in background. When it ended, the channel went blank or static would appear so that you were forced to read or go to bed on time. There were no forms of social media, online influencers, dark webs, Kartrashians, focus on fake body parts, profanity in rap/hip hop, love songs that actually uplifted and focused on connecting with your partner, music was much better because the artist were ACTUAL musicians and gave real concerts. GenXers were independent, yet able to enjoy our childhood. We explored the world, and appreciated what we had around us. We were resourceful, and learned how to protect ourselves WITHOUT the use of lethal weapons. It was time of Mcgyver on tv making science look cool, Knight Rider, Dallas, Falcon Crest, Punky Brewster, We bster, Silver Spoons, Cosby Show, 227, A Different World, Star Search, Solid Gold, and Soul Train. There are so many other brilliantly written shows from that decade to name. Maybe one day, just one, we can pretend to experience this again.

Ever feeling hopeless?.. I do sometimes. This song just reminds me of staying present, enjoying my day to day life, monotony, work, bills, all other gnarly stuff that I sometimes gotta force myself to do. But just look at these young lads singing their hearts out back in the 80’s, time is precious and ruthless, they are both over 60 now. Don’t forget to nourish yourself, don’t forget to take care of your loved ones, show up for yourself and everyone around you daily. If you are not happy with current situation and want to push blame to someone, I encourage you to take action and do it yourself what you expect from others - because at the end of the day it feels good. Stay blessed people and value time in present. Afternoon of 29/02/2024.

Welcome to your life, there's no turning back, Even while we sleep, We will find you acting on your best behavior Turn your back on mother nature Everybody wants to rule the world It's my own desire, it's my own remorse. Help me to decide. Help me make the most of freedom and of pleasure Nothing ever lasts forever Everybody wants to rule the world There's a room where the light won't find you Holding hands while the walls come tumbling down When they do, I'll be right behind you So glad we've almost made it So sad they had to fade it Everybody wants to rule the world I can't stand this indecision, married with a lack of vision Everybody wants to rule the world Say that you'll never, never, never, never need it One headline, why believe it? Everybody wants to rule the world All for freedom and for pleasure Nothing ever lasts forever Everybody wants to rule the world

I feel the same - but still can’t put my finger on why exactly that is the case. As someone being born in 89 I still think it was a truely unique episode of time with such a huge impact on so many people.

So lucky to be born in the 60s. Idolized the 60s, nostalgic for the 70s, teenager in the 80's, came into maturity in the 90s. 4 decades of great music we may never see again in our lifetimes.

As someone born in the 90's with deep musical roots due to my upbringing: I can't agree with you more. 60's - 90's music is quite possibly the best there ever will be in the foreseeable future

Alors ça c'est certain, la musique aura été de Jean-Sébastien Bach jusqu'à Coldplay. Après se sera le néant jusqu'à ce que le capitalisme s'écroule et que la musique redevienne un art et non une industrie source de profit

This has to be the most nostalgic song period. Makes me feel all sorts of emotions at the same time, mainly sadness. The message is clear, intentions of the human race are all the same and every decision made is to satisfy our impending thought of perishing. Live life while you have it! Here one day and gone the next. LOVE AND PEACE TO ALL XX

Brings back a lot of memories, some sad, mostly good. I was 23. Wondering if I’d ever find love. Then 4 years later, on October 18th, someone tapped me on the shoulder while I was at Tiffany’s. I turned around and looked into the eyes of my future. He introduced himself, we talked a bit, he asked if he could buy me a drink. We sat across from each other for hours getting to know each other. 30 years later, were still together. We got married, bought a house, and he’s given me 4 dogs and 5 station wagons. A few years ago, he walked into a hospital room, his eyes were so sad. He had to tell me I had cancer. It broke his heart. He’s been by my side as I still try to recover. I never thought I could love anyone as much as him. The music back then was the best, it still brings a smile to my face.

My recovery hasn’t been as we hoped it would be, but as long as we have each other, I’m happy. I don’t know what I’d do without him. I always gave my mom credit for us being together. The first time Matt called to ask me out, I was at my folks house. It was family dinner night. I turned him down, asked for a rain check. My mom told me to call him back right away, you never turn down dinner, especially if he said I could pick wherever I wanted to go. So, if it hadn’t been for my mom, we might not be together.
