Although New Order are seen as a synthpop band, they took pride in playing live, varying setlists every night and frequently improvising. It's worth checking out live recordings of their songs just to see how varied the performances were. That said, they did originally conceive Blue Monday as an encore that a sequencer could play while the band was drinking in the dressing room. You see a remnant of that idea at the end of the video, when the music changes and everyone stops playing.

Ok ok, it does not sound very good, I agree. But you (we) are all thinking in the album "canonic" version, 1000000000 listened in our lives. But, lets remember the song was really new, I feel they were a kind of training-testing the song, instruments, keyboards, Bernard´s voice tune, etc. Just listen to the weird (and nice) ending (3:45)

Here in Brazil, in the 1980s, New Order was one of the most successful international bands, practically, all the teenagers of this generation loved it and had at least one New Order album, especially the incredible album Substânce 1987. And today with "49" years old (I had misspelled my age, in fact I recently turned 49 years old rs), I still enjoy listening to the beautiful. electronic music of New Order, my favorite band.

@@Moondoggy1941 True, the 80's were incredible (today I'm 49, I was a teenager at that time lol), great bands and incredible music, I really enjoyed: The Cure, The Smiths, New Order, Duran Duran, Queen, A-Ha, Depeche Mode , Pet Shop Boys, Information Society and many, many other bands and singers that if you write here would make a great list, not to mention Brazilian bands and musicians, by the way, they removed the link for the Brazilian band that I left for you to hear, you got to listen??? Liked??? Listen to the songs of this other Brazilian band here that was very successful in the 80's too, I hope they don't remove it and that you like it ... I had left a link with another Brazilian band that was very successful here in Brazil in the 80s, but again they removed it, that group is so slutty, because it is not competing with English music, then I will make a list with the best bands, singers and songs on my channel, then if you want, go there and watch, combined English friend ???

New Order, Pet Shop Boys, Erasure, Yazoo, Depeche Mode, and many English bands from the early 80's fulfilled a musical gap that didn't exist in Brazil and many other countries. The Brazilian song from the early 80's was a typical soft rock, boring and not interesting to dance.

Considering there was very little RAM to store custom patches, you needed that many to actually have enough instrument sounds for the song

Saw them live in 1982. Still vividly remember Bernard swearing constantly at Gillian because she messed up the floppies for the sequencer. Several times they basically waited for the sequencer to start and then just followed whatever song came out. It was brilliant! Best live gig I ever saw! (well, Anne Clark in 1985 was also very good)

How much of this TOTP performance was actually live? It seems quite a bit more than I expected

@@012345familythey seem to be playing to a sequenced core backing track (basically the drums). But the rest is live… synth parts, sound effects (at one point hilariously played wrong 😂 2:22) live electronic percussion, the six-string bass lead lines, and of course the vocals (including laughter 3:21 😂).

As a collection of parts “borrowed” from a dozen earlier records this worked out surprisingly well played live.
