The first plane hitting, nobody really knew. The first reports were of a small aircraft because nobody could have conceived people using a commerical aircraft as a weapon. Not even the first responders knew exactly the extent of the damage until firefighters like Orio Palmer reached that area of the building. By that time, the building was about to collapse. If the first responders knew it was a commercial aircraft and there was structural damage to the building, the FDNY would have never sent a man up those stairs. Communication in 2001 was a lot slower as well. The only people who really knew what happened were the air traffic controllers, and eventually the vice president and pentagon. But not even the president was aware of it being a real terrorist attack until the 2nd plane hit. He was still sitting in a classroom in Florida reading children a book when the 2nd plane hit. Information coming in real time from events like that is never accurate until a full investigation is done. That usually takes weeks, months, and years to get all the facts straight.
